Rangers: Report makes McPake claim

Glasgow Rangers youngster Josh McPake is being targeted by AFC Wimbledon, according to a report from Football Insider.

The lowdown: Eternal loanee

A graduate of the academy in Glasgow, McPake made a senior bow for the Gers under Steven Gerrard against St Joseph’s FC in the Europa League qualifying phase in 2019.

Since then the right-winger has spent time on loan at Dundee FC, Morton, Harrogate Town, Morecambe and most recently with Tranmere Rovers.

Set to return to Ibrox in the coming weeks, the Scottish youth international is now believed to be considering where his future may lie…

The latest: ‘Joined the race’

As per Football Insider, recently relegated AFC Wimbledon are keen on signing the ‘surplus to requirements’ 20-year-old attacker.

It’s claimed that the League Two outfit have ‘joined the race’ alongside Raith Rovers and Carlisle United to sign McPake this summer whose ‘future is up in the air’ at Rangers.

The report also states that ‘sources’ at Ibrox have suggested that the Teddy Bears are ‘willing’ to part with the youngster who was dubbed ‘too hot to handle’ by former Harrogate manager Simon Weaver.

The verdict: Time’s up

Despite a promising youth career, recent spells away from the club have flattered to deceive and Giovani van Bronckhorst is unlikely to hand McPake another shot at first-team football in the near future.

The supremely versatile forward has scored seven times and provided three assists in 66 games across the various levels of his career, but he struggled to make an impact in five outings whilst on loan at League One Morecambe before an ankle issue cut that short.

Valued at just £68,000 and under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), the Gers should at least be confident of boosting their own budget slightly with the sale of McPake, particularly having only agreed on a new deal last summer.

Everton plot bid for Armando Broja

Armando Broja has been heavily linked with a move to Everton this summer, but the Toffees will face competition after a new update has emerged on the player’s potential options ahead of the transfer window.

What’s the latest?

According to Daily Mail, West Ham United have now joined the race to sign the Southampton loanee and Chelsea forward this summer.

As per the report, Broja has interest from Newcastle, Everton, Napoli and Inter Milan with the Hammers joining them recently in hope that they can snap up the youngster ahead of next season.

Calvert-Lewin 2.0

Following reports of Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s potential departure from Goodison Park this summer, it could be the perfect opportunity to sign a new striker that has the potential to succeed the Toffees forward if they can get a deal done for Broja during the transfer window.

Newcastle United are speculated to be preparing a bid for the Everton goal machine, and Farhad Moshiri must do everything he can to ensure the club isn’t caught short next season, something he could plan for by signing the Chelsea youngster.

Everton should be in a good position to sign the striker as Frank Lampard previously worked with Broja and even gave him his Premier League debut when he was managing Chelsea, so the Toffees boss has clear knowledge of the player’s talents, strengths and capabilities making it easier for him to deploy him effectively in the team.

You can draw some comparisons from 6 foot 1 Calvert-Lewin in the 6 foot 2 youngster, as they both use their height to successfully win aerial battles and dictate play with their stature in the final third, something that Broja in particular has excelled in during his loan spell at Southampton.

The £25m monster who was hailed “powerful” by journalist Josh Bunting ranked third for aerial challenges won in the Premier League this season, and ranks fourth for aerial challenges committed, unsuccessful in just 53 out of 302 which is extremely impressive and proves he is completely fearless in winning the ball at any cost.

With that being said, Broja would be a like for like replacement with the potential to emulate Calvert-Lewin’s success at Everton should he leave this summer and Frank Lampard must use his influence and relationship with the player to get him signed up at Goodison Park ahead of next season.

Wolves could cash in on Morgan Gibbs-White

Wolves will try to nail down Morgan Gibbs-White to a new contract this summer but may also be tempted to cash in on him, according to journalist Alex Crook.

The Lowdown: Gibbs-White in good form

The 22-year-old spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Sheffield United, where he enjoyed a hugely fruitful time of things.

Gibbs-White ended up with a tally of 12 goals and 10 assists in the Championship for the Blades, being hailed as having the ‘world at his feet’ by Bramall Lane team-mate David McGoldrick.

The midfielder will now return to Molineux this summer, at which point a big decision may need to be made regarding his future.

The Latest: Gibbs-White’s Wolves future

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Crook claimed that Wolves are very much keen on securing his future at the club, but could also be tempted by a substantial transfer offer for him. The journalist stated:

“There’s a lot of interest in Morgan Gibbs-White, I’m just trying to stand up exactly where that’s going. I think Wolves would like to sign him to a new contract, but if he’s a player they can get £20m for, they might see that as a good investment and a chance to rebuild.”

[freshpress-poll id=“388780″]

The Verdict: Don’t lose him

To lose Gibbs-White at this point in his career would be criminal, considering his vast potential and the distinct possibility that Ruben Neves will be sold.

The 22-year-old is too good a talent not to be kept at the club, considering that he has made seven appearances for England’s under-21s and been touted as one of the best young players in the country.

Handing Gibbs-White a new deal seems a no-brainer for Wolves, especially given his current form. Whether or not the player accepts it is another thing altogether, and he may feel that he wants a new challenge. An interesting summer could lie ahead for player and club.

Everton plot move for Armando Broja

Everton are in need of reinforcements this summer to improve the squad ahead of next season following a difficult season in the Premier League, and now a transfer insider has dropped a major update.

What’s the latest?

According to journalist and transfer insider Dean Jones, Frank Lampard could tempt Armando Broja into a move to Goodison Park this summer.

Jones told GIVEMESPORT:

“Lampard obviously can use his contacts to get into Broja early, speak to him himself, and just try and convince him that Everton is a club that’s going to be in transition but in a good way. That’s going to be the big message that they send out.”

Supporters will be excited

Broja has been one of the most exciting young talents in the Premier League this season and already has a connection with Frank Lampard from his days as Chelsea manager, so supporters will surely be delighted by at the prospect of signing the player.

The Toffees boss actually gave the Chelsea youth player his debut in the Premier League and has always given high praise to Broja, recently hailing him in an interview ahead of Everton’s game against Southampton this season;

“He’s a very good lad, very talented young boy,” he said.

“He’s fast, strong, has a real eye for a goal. He’s a very good young player, so I’m very aware of his strengths.”

Broja has had an impressive season on loan with Southampton scoring nine goals and contributing one assist in all competitions, the forward also ranks third for the highest aerial duels in the league this season.

Lampard’s experience with the player can ensure an instant impact is made in the team should he join the Merseyside club this summer as the manager is well aware of his strengths and ability, and could ultimately bring out the best in the youngster in his attacking-minded set up.

With that being said, Broja is attracting interest from a number of clubs with Newcastle United, West Ham United and AC Milan named as potential suitors, so the Everton manager will need to present an attractive offer to the young player this summer.

Leeds: Raphinha hands in transfer request

Leeds United winger Raphinha has reportedly asked the club to sanction a move to Barcelona this summer, according to Spanish outlet Sport (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Out on a high?

The 25-year-old joined in the jubilant celebrations amongst the Whites’ faithful as Leeds salvaged their Premier League status with a 2-1 final day victory over Brentford on Sunday.

Raphinha opened the scoring from the penalty spot to take his own personal tally to 29 direct goal contributions in 67 outings since arriving in Yorkshire from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in October 2020.

However, having already attracted previous attention from Liverpool, it appears that another of Europe’s big hitters could be set to swoop for the Brazilian this summer…

The latest: Transfer request

As per Sport, translated by Sport Witness, Raphinha is believed to have asked Leeds to ‘transfer him’ to Barcelona during the summer.

It’s claimed that the seven-cap Brazil international is ‘pushing’ for a move to the Camp Nou, having helped Jesse Marsch’s side to retain top-flight status.

The report claimed that the proposed move has already ‘taken a step forward’, with the man who was hailed by journalist Joe Prince-Wright for a ‘sensational’ performance in a 3-2 against West Ham earlier this year seeking to ‘clarify the negotiating scenario’ over the coming days.

The verdict: Hard to stop

Ultimately, despite securing Premier League football for 2022/23, it seems inevitable that Leeds will struggle to fend off interest from the likes of Barcelona in their star forward.

Raphinha ended the campaign with 11 goals and three assists in 36 league appearances, earning a 6.97 Sofascore rating whilst completing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, highlighting a continued top-class level of output as others struggled at Elland Road.

Holding a perceived market value of £40.5m and under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), avoiding relegation does at least mean that Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani can demand the maximum fee for the Brazilian star, who could reportedly have been acquired for just £25m had Leeds dropped to the Championship.

Sunderland want to remove ‘toxic’ owners

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could end a ‘toxic’ era at Sunderland if he buys out Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven.

The Lowdown: Sunderland takeover development

As per Football Insider, Louis-Dreyfus currently owns 41 percent of the Black Cats, which amounts to a controlling stake in the club.

However, The Sunderland Echo have recently reported that Louis-Dreyfus is looking to take full-control of the North East outfit.

Football Insider understands that Methven and Donald would part with their shares for £10.7m.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire believes that the day-to-day running of Sunderland would change drastically if Louis-Dreyfus were to take over.

Speaking with Football Insider, the Sky Sports football finance guru claimed:

“Decisions under this format would be made more smoothly.

“Methven and Donald are a toxic legacy of some of the worst years in the club’s history as far as fans are concerned.

“They had two years of parachute payments in League One and failed to get promoted. Fingers have to be pointed at Donald and Methven because it is ultimately their responsibility.

“With a majority stake, there can be more focus and the club can be run on a more streamlined basis.

“If he is to be constrained in terms of what he can invest because all shareholders have to agree on the level of spending, they are then acting liking an anchor.”

The Verdict: Needs to happen

With years of misery endured under the poor leadership of Donald and Methven, Sunderland needs a fresh take on its ownership.

If Louis-Dreyfus were to take full-control, this would spark a new era within the Black Cats, with a streamlined running of the club taking a priority as they finally bounce back to the second tier.

Therefore, if the possibility for a complete takeover is there, Sunderland fans will be urging Donald and Methven to accept the offer, happy at the thought of the pair’s departure.

Rangers team news vs Frankfurt

Glasgow Rangers have now been gifted a big ‘boost’ before the UEFA Europa League final tonight.

The Lowdown: Day has arrived

The day has finally arrived for the Ibrox faithful and its supporters, as they play Bundesliga side Frankfurt for the chance to win the Europa League in what would be a momentous achievement.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As well as lifting a major piece of silverware, winning it would also mean UEFA Champions League qualification for the Teddy Bears next season, in pot one of the draw for the group stages no less.

The Latest: Roofe ‘boost’

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference before the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that Kemar Roofe will now be ‘available’ after a period out through injury.

The Dutch manager added that he is ready to play if called upon, in what is a ‘boost’ for him and his team.

The Verdict: Big

It certainly is a big boost for the Light Blues to be able to call upon Roofe for the final after his injury setback.

His 16 goals in total over all competitions so far this season is only bettered by the injured Alfredo Morelos and captain James Tavernier, so having that natural threat in front of goal could well giver the Gers the edge, even if it’s only a matter of playing the final 20 minutes and/or extra time.

With Morelos out, they would ideally want a natural striker to lead the line, and Roofe has already shown on many occasions this term that he can do it with success.

Manchester United: Fabrizio Romano drops van der Gaag news

Manchester United are working on contract details over a move for Ajax assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Van der Gaag links

Erik ten Hag was announced as United’s new manager last month, with the Dutchman penning a contract at Old Trafford through to 2025.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He quickly gave the green light to Red Devils chiefs to secure a move for Van der Gaag, who has served as Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax for 46 games.

However, despite Van der Gaag accepting a position in Manchester, a deal is yet to be sealed, but it looks as if United are getting closer.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano took to Twitter in the early hours of Tuesday morning to provide an update on United and Van der Gaag.

He revealed the club are working on contact details for the assistant manager to join Ten Hag, labelling it as an ‘important addition’ with an ‘agreement getting closer’.

“Manchester United are working on the details of the contract to bring Mitchell van der Gaag at the club from Ajax, as part of Erik ten Hag coaching staff.

“Van der Gaag has been considered an important addition for months – agreement getting closer. Talks ongoing.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Ten Hag is seemingly keen to bring Van der Gaag with him to Old Trafford, so this update appears to be good news ahead of the transfer window opening, where the United boss will more than likely be extremely busy with incomings and outgoings.

A move for the Ajax assistant would be Ten Hag’s first and perhaps most important piece of business as United manager, and it looks as if it could be just a matter of time until a deal is over the line.

Of course, there could still be hiccups, with reports last month suggesting Van der Gaag could succeed Ten Hag as Ajax manager, but Romano’s latest update points to an Old Trafford move.

Ryder buzzing over Newcastle Rigg move

The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder has been left buzzing over some Newcastle United transfer news on 15-year-old central midfielder Chris Rigg.

The Lowdown: Newcastle edge ahead

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has revealed that the St. James’ Park outfit have edged ahead in the chase for Sunderland wonderkid Rigg, and are now hoping to complete a deal.

He is being tracked by a number of top clubs and has already captained England at youth level with the U16s, bagging a boot deal with Adidas along the way.

However, the Tynesiders would have to pay a compensation fee of £2.5m if they are to sign him from their North East rivals.

The Latest: Ryder buzzing

Taking to Twitter, Ryder gave his opinion on the saga, claiming that signing Rigg ‘will be a genuinely super deal’ for Eddie Howe’s side if they can pull it off:

“This will be a genuinely super deal for #nufc moving into a bright future if they can pull it off.”

The Verdict: Exciting

The prospect of signing a player as highly-rated as Rigg, especially from their local rivals, is an exciting one for the Toon Army.

Hailed as a player with ‘frightening ability’ by football insiders, he scored two goals and made two assists in nine games for the Black Cats’ U18s team last season at the tender age of just 14 (black and white daft’.

Nonetheless, this should give the Magpies even more encouragement that they can sign him ahead of the chasing pack.

Newcastle: Big Hakan Calhanoglu transfer news emerges

Newcastle United are interested in Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato Web.

The lowdown

Central midfielder Calhanoglu only joined Inter last summer, making a cross-city move from AC Milan as a free agent.

And he’s actually been heavily involved so far this season, starting five of Inter’s six Serie A matches as well as their Champions League Group C opener against Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old, who can also play as an attacking midfielder and left winger, has two years left on his contract.

The latest

The report states that Inter are ready to sell Calhanoglu if they receive ‘the right offer’.

The Nerazzurri apparently value him in the region of €30million, which equates to £26million.

Calhanoglu has been ‘in the sights’ of Newcastle ‘in recent months’, with other Premier League sides interested too.

Significantly, Inter already have a replacement lined up in Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi.

The verdict

Calhanoglu boasts a fairly strong record for Inter, scoring or assisting 23 goals in 53 appearances for the club (9G, 14A).

And it’s a signing that could seriously excite Newcastle fans given the Turkish midfielder’s flair for the spectacular.

Since the start of the 2014/15 season, he’s scored 20 goals from outside the penalty area and, over the course of his career as a whole, he’s netted 24 direct free-kicks. To put that into perspective, Kieran Trippier has just eight for club and one for country.

His scarcely believable dead-ball effort in Hamburg’s 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in 2014 has been viewed 5.2 million times on YouTube.
