Leeds: Raphinha hands in transfer request

Leeds United winger Raphinha has reportedly asked the club to sanction a move to Barcelona this summer, according to Spanish outlet Sport (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown: Out on a high?

The 25-year-old joined in the jubilant celebrations amongst the Whites’ faithful as Leeds salvaged their Premier League status with a 2-1 final day victory over Brentford on Sunday.

Raphinha opened the scoring from the penalty spot to take his own personal tally to 29 direct goal contributions in 67 outings since arriving in Yorkshire from Ligue 1 outfit Rennes in October 2020.

However, having already attracted previous attention from Liverpool, it appears that another of Europe’s big hitters could be set to swoop for the Brazilian this summer…

The latest: Transfer request

As per Sport, translated by Sport Witness, Raphinha is believed to have asked Leeds to ‘transfer him’ to Barcelona during the summer.

It’s claimed that the seven-cap Brazil international is ‘pushing’ for a move to the Camp Nou, having helped Jesse Marsch’s side to retain top-flight status.

The report claimed that the proposed move has already ‘taken a step forward’, with the man who was hailed by journalist Joe Prince-Wright for a ‘sensational’ performance in a 3-2 against West Ham earlier this year seeking to ‘clarify the negotiating scenario’ over the coming days.

The verdict: Hard to stop

Ultimately, despite securing Premier League football for 2022/23, it seems inevitable that Leeds will struggle to fend off interest from the likes of Barcelona in their star forward.

Raphinha ended the campaign with 11 goals and three assists in 36 league appearances, earning a 6.97 Sofascore rating whilst completing 1.8 successful dribbles per game, highlighting a continued top-class level of output as others struggled at Elland Road.

Holding a perceived market value of £40.5m and under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt), avoiding relegation does at least mean that Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani can demand the maximum fee for the Brazilian star, who could reportedly have been acquired for just £25m had Leeds dropped to the Championship.

Sunderland want to remove ‘toxic’ owners

Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has claimed that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus could end a ‘toxic’ era at Sunderland if he buys out Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven.

The Lowdown: Sunderland takeover development

As per Football Insider, Louis-Dreyfus currently owns 41 percent of the Black Cats, which amounts to a controlling stake in the club.

However, The Sunderland Echo have recently reported that Louis-Dreyfus is looking to take full-control of the North East outfit.

Football Insider understands that Methven and Donald would part with their shares for £10.7m.

The Latest: Maguire reacts

Maguire believes that the day-to-day running of Sunderland would change drastically if Louis-Dreyfus were to take over.

Speaking with Football Insider, the Sky Sports football finance guru claimed:

“Decisions under this format would be made more smoothly.

“Methven and Donald are a toxic legacy of some of the worst years in the club’s history as far as fans are concerned.

“They had two years of parachute payments in League One and failed to get promoted. Fingers have to be pointed at Donald and Methven because it is ultimately their responsibility.

“With a majority stake, there can be more focus and the club can be run on a more streamlined basis.

“If he is to be constrained in terms of what he can invest because all shareholders have to agree on the level of spending, they are then acting liking an anchor.”

The Verdict: Needs to happen

With years of misery endured under the poor leadership of Donald and Methven, Sunderland needs a fresh take on its ownership.

If Louis-Dreyfus were to take full-control, this would spark a new era within the Black Cats, with a streamlined running of the club taking a priority as they finally bounce back to the second tier.

Therefore, if the possibility for a complete takeover is there, Sunderland fans will be urging Donald and Methven to accept the offer, happy at the thought of the pair’s departure.

Rangers team news vs Frankfurt

Glasgow Rangers have now been gifted a big ‘boost’ before the UEFA Europa League final tonight.

The Lowdown: Day has arrived

The day has finally arrived for the Ibrox faithful and its supporters, as they play Bundesliga side Frankfurt for the chance to win the Europa League in what would be a momentous achievement.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/rangers-news-4/” title=”Rangers news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As well as lifting a major piece of silverware, winning it would also mean UEFA Champions League qualification for the Teddy Bears next season, in pot one of the draw for the group stages no less.

The Latest: Roofe ‘boost’

Speaking to the media in his pre-game press conference before the match, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed that Kemar Roofe will now be ‘available’ after a period out through injury.

The Dutch manager added that he is ready to play if called upon, in what is a ‘boost’ for him and his team.

The Verdict: Big

It certainly is a big boost for the Light Blues to be able to call upon Roofe for the final after his injury setback.

His 16 goals in total over all competitions so far this season is only bettered by the injured Alfredo Morelos and captain James Tavernier, so having that natural threat in front of goal could well giver the Gers the edge, even if it’s only a matter of playing the final 20 minutes and/or extra time.

With Morelos out, they would ideally want a natural striker to lead the line, and Roofe has already shown on many occasions this term that he can do it with success.

Manchester United: Fabrizio Romano drops van der Gaag news

Manchester United are working on contract details over a move for Ajax assistant manager Mitchell van der Gaag, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Lowdown: Van der Gaag links

Erik ten Hag was announced as United’s new manager last month, with the Dutchman penning a contract at Old Trafford through to 2025.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He quickly gave the green light to Red Devils chiefs to secure a move for Van der Gaag, who has served as Ten Hag’s assistant at Ajax for 46 games.

However, despite Van der Gaag accepting a position in Manchester, a deal is yet to be sealed, but it looks as if United are getting closer.

The Latest: Romano’s post

Romano took to Twitter in the early hours of Tuesday morning to provide an update on United and Van der Gaag.

He revealed the club are working on contact details for the assistant manager to join Ten Hag, labelling it as an ‘important addition’ with an ‘agreement getting closer’.

“Manchester United are working on the details of the contract to bring Mitchell van der Gaag at the club from Ajax, as part of Erik ten Hag coaching staff.

“Van der Gaag has been considered an important addition for months – agreement getting closer. Talks ongoing.”

The Verdict: Fingers crossed

Ten Hag is seemingly keen to bring Van der Gaag with him to Old Trafford, so this update appears to be good news ahead of the transfer window opening, where the United boss will more than likely be extremely busy with incomings and outgoings.

A move for the Ajax assistant would be Ten Hag’s first and perhaps most important piece of business as United manager, and it looks as if it could be just a matter of time until a deal is over the line.

Of course, there could still be hiccups, with reports last month suggesting Van der Gaag could succeed Ten Hag as Ajax manager, but Romano’s latest update points to an Old Trafford move.

Ryder buzzing over Newcastle Rigg move

The Chronicle journalist Lee Ryder has been left buzzing over some Newcastle United transfer news on 15-year-old central midfielder Chris Rigg.

The Lowdown: Newcastle edge ahead

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Ryder has revealed that the St. James’ Park outfit have edged ahead in the chase for Sunderland wonderkid Rigg, and are now hoping to complete a deal.

He is being tracked by a number of top clubs and has already captained England at youth level with the U16s, bagging a boot deal with Adidas along the way.

However, the Tynesiders would have to pay a compensation fee of £2.5m if they are to sign him from their North East rivals.

The Latest: Ryder buzzing

Taking to Twitter, Ryder gave his opinion on the saga, claiming that signing Rigg ‘will be a genuinely super deal’ for Eddie Howe’s side if they can pull it off:

“This will be a genuinely super deal for #nufc moving into a bright future if they can pull it off.”

The Verdict: Exciting

The prospect of signing a player as highly-rated as Rigg, especially from their local rivals, is an exciting one for the Toon Army.

Hailed as a player with ‘frightening ability’ by football insiders, he scored two goals and made two assists in nine games for the Black Cats’ U18s team last season at the tender age of just 14 (black and white daft’.

Nonetheless, this should give the Magpies even more encouragement that they can sign him ahead of the chasing pack.

Newcastle: Big Hakan Calhanoglu transfer news emerges

Newcastle United are interested in Inter Milan’s Hakan Calhanoglu, according to Italian outlet Calciomercato Web.

The lowdown

Central midfielder Calhanoglu only joined Inter last summer, making a cross-city move from AC Milan as a free agent.

And he’s actually been heavily involved so far this season, starting five of Inter’s six Serie A matches as well as their Champions League Group C opener against Bayern Munich.

The 28-year-old, who can also play as an attacking midfielder and left winger, has two years left on his contract.

The latest

The report states that Inter are ready to sell Calhanoglu if they receive ‘the right offer’.

The Nerazzurri apparently value him in the region of €30million, which equates to £26million.

Calhanoglu has been ‘in the sights’ of Newcastle ‘in recent months’, with other Premier League sides interested too.

Significantly, Inter already have a replacement lined up in Atalanta’s Ruslan Malinovskyi.

The verdict

Calhanoglu boasts a fairly strong record for Inter, scoring or assisting 23 goals in 53 appearances for the club (9G, 14A).

And it’s a signing that could seriously excite Newcastle fans given the Turkish midfielder’s flair for the spectacular.

Since the start of the 2014/15 season, he’s scored 20 goals from outside the penalty area and, over the course of his career as a whole, he’s netted 24 direct free-kicks. To put that into perspective, Kieran Trippier has just eight for club and one for country.

His scarcely believable dead-ball effort in Hamburg’s 3-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in 2014 has been viewed 5.2 million times on YouTube.

Newcastle missed out on Harrison Ashby

Newcastle United reportedly failed with a late swoop for West Ham United defender Harrison Ashby, with manager Eddie Howe having been keen to bolster his defensive ranks.

What’s the word?

Reports on deadline day had revealed that the Magpies had made a move to sign the 20-year-old full-back, having been left short on the right side of the defence following the ACL injury to Sweden international Emil Krafth.

The Athletic has now revealed that the deal ‘broke down’ as the Hammers were ‘reluctant’ to part ways with the Scotland U21 international, despite the youngster having just a year left on his current deal at the London Stadium.

The report suggests that even though the Milton Keynes-born starlet is behind both Vladimir Coufal and Ben Johnson in the pecking order in east London, a hamstring injury to the latter man ensured that David Moyes was not willing to leave himself short.

It could cost Howe

That inability to get a deal over the line could well come back to bite Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, with the 44-year-old currently left with Javier Manquillo as the only alternative to Kieran Trippier at right-back.

Although an experienced asset, the 28-year-old has appeared surplus to requirements under the former Bournemouth head coach in recent times, making just 13 appearances for the northeast side since the Englishman was appointed back in November.

Those outings had seemingly only come about due to a lengthy injury absence to January arrival, Trippier, last term, with it no doubt set to be of real concern should the England international be struck down again any time soon, such is the lack of quality cover.

Although Ashby is a largely unknown quantity at senior level – having made just six first-team appearances for his current side – he has already caught the eye in his embryonic career thus far, having been dubbed “fearless” by West Ham podcaster, Sam Delaney.

His only outing thus far this term came in the Europa Conference League, first leg playoff tie against Viborg FF, with the highly-rated prospect catching the eye in that 3-1 triumph, recording three interceptions, two clearances and one tackle from his 90-minute display – with his match rating of 7.1 the fourth highest in Moyes’ starting XI on the day, as per SofaScore.

A player who could well explode in the years to come, the Tynesiders will now have to wait until January, or next summer, if they are to sign the £270k-rated sensation, albeit that could well come too late if an injury does befall the aforementioned Trippier.

Tilak seals thriller to give India ninth Asia Cup title

The Asia Cup final went down to the wire as Tilak calmly helped India chase down 147

Alagappan Muthu28-Sep-20253:17

Which Indian spinner had the biggest impact?

India blinked. They were 20 for 3 chasing 147. Their world-beating batting line-up was panicking as Pakistan came at them – this time for every reason because there was a title on the line.A collapse of 9 for 33 had left Salman Agha’s men with no room for error and for the most part they coped with it. They got rid of Abhishek Sharma early. That sent jitters through a middle-order that was upended to accommodate Shubman Gill.A straightforward chase was going pear-shaped. And Tilak Varma felt all of this out in the middle. The quiet of the stands. The belief among the Pakistan players. The doubts of a billion people back home. Somehow he absorbed it all and produced a really special half-century.Concentrating as hard as he had to, there wasn’t a single moment through the innings where Tilak showed emotion. But once it was done, he yelled, he punched, he made little heart signs with his hands and basked in the glory of winning India their ninth Asia Cup title.Farhan’s opening salvoThis entire Asia Cup has been a referendum on Pakistan’s decision to move on from Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan. There is credence to the theory that they do not push hard enough when they bat up the order, and the powerplay is not a time to be shy.Sahibzada Farhan went for his shots early•Getty Images

Sahibzada Farhan took that to heart and although he didn’t always come up with the goods, he never stopped swinging. A series of slogs took him to 26 off 21. And those same series of slogs – when they started connecting – brought him 50 off 35.The Pakistan collapseFarhan and Fakhar Zaman were able to put one of India’s bankers – Kuldeep Yadav – under pressure. The left-arm wristspinner’s first two overs went for 23. That prompted Suryakumar Yadav to turn to Varun Chakravarthy, whose mystery Pakistan have just not been able to solve. As if on cue, he took down both of Pakistan’s top scorers. Farhan and Fakhar were the only two to cross 15.On the back of Varun’s incisions, his team-mates came into their own. Axar Patel took two wickets in back-to-back overs. Kuldeep took three in one single over. Pakistan were 107 for 1 with 44 balls to play. They were bowled out with five balls remaining. A large part of their innings involved the batters going for slogs. In the front 10, they either made good contact or just plain missed. So just one wicket fell. In the back 10, the big hits were all mis-hits. So nine wickets fell.Tilak’s methodWhere all his team-mates tried to force the issue, Tilak found ways to trust himself. He was 24 off 26. But he didn’t seem to care. Early in his innings, he hit a back foot punch though extra cover for four off Ashraf. There was no pace on that ball. The only way he could find the boundary was if he timed the ball perfectly. And for that to happen, he had to have the measure of this pitch down pat. He did.Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube’s brisk stand lifted India•Getty Images

That confidence fuelled the rest of his innings, reminding him that he needn’t over-exert himself. India had to settle for either singles or dots through the eighth and ninth overs of the chase as Abrar Ahmed and Saim Ayub stuck to the basics – keeping the stumps in play and asking India to take risks if they wanted to score quickly. Tilak rose to that challenge but even then, he was careful to go after the full one, the one that he could get to the pitch of and negate the turn. All that good work meant even with long-on in play, the ball went for six.In the 15th over, Tilak did another cool thing. With wickets falling around him, he had shown he was ready for a fight. In rebuilding India’s innings with barely a false shot, he showed he was in the zone. Now, seeing Haris Rauf running in, he showed a mind for problem-solving. He had seen how hard it was to hit with pace off the ball. Now that Pakistan were offering pace, he took full toll. Seventeen runs came from that 15th over and changed the complexion of the game. From needing 64 off 36, India needed 47 off 30.Dube cameoIndia were without their first-choice seam-bowling allrounder. Hardik Pandya was nursing a quad niggle and couldn’t make the XI. Shivam Dube did, after resting the last game. He was responsible for two absolutely vital sixes. The first of those showcased his spin-hitting ability as he tonked Abrar down the ground. The second exemplified how well he reads the game. He had faced, and watched from the other end, as Ashraf in the 19th over, tried to hide the ball outside off stump. So when he got back on strike, he indulged in an exaggerated trigger movement across his stumps to get closer to the ball and launch it over wide long-on. Dube contributed 33 off 22 to a momentum-shifting, match-winning, fifth-wicket partnership that yielded 60 runs off 40 balls. He also had to open the bowling for the first time in any format of cricket, finishing with 3-0-23-0. It was a splendid day’s work. The finishThese three India-Pakistan games have taken place under the shadow of far greater events. The two countries were in military conflict earlier this year. The two teams have not shaken hands. The two captains have even been avoiding eye contact. Rauf was fined for making gestures that seemed to point to those cross-border tensions. Jasprit Bumrah used the same gesture – hand pointed down, arcing to the floor – to give it back to Rauf after bringing down his stumps with a yorker.Tilak Varma celebrates a tense victory•AFP/Getty Images

The highly charged atmosphere that has been taking focus away from the cricket now added to it. The two coaches – Mike Hesson and Gautam Gambhir – would not accept being left on the sidelines, sending out messages to help the teams as the equation grew tighter. 30 off 18. 17 off 12. 10 off 6.With eight to get off five, Tilak launched a six over square leg – once more showcasing just how well he had grown accustomed to tough batting conditions and Rauf once again falling short by putting pace on the ball. Everything that happened after that will be turned into a meme. Tilak making the heart sign. Rinku Singh haring off into the distance. Gambhir banging a desk. This was an India-Pakistan classic worth the 41-year wait both teams needed to make the final of the Asia Cup.
