Ballance is toast of Scarborough landladies

ScorecardThe Scarborough Festival is assured of a third day•Getty Images

The second day of this match was probably not one on which any Yorkshire supporter was well-advised to stay at home and cut his hedge. On the other hand, it may have been wise for Nottinghamshire loyalists in Scarborough to turn off their phones and head instead for the Howardian Hills.Unless more rains falls than is forecast, Chris Read’s team will need to bat for around 150 overs to save a game they actually need to win. Wednesday’s evidence suggests they are ill-equipped to get halfway towards this objective.Nottinghamshire’s decline on a day containing one collapse and the odd longueur gathered pace at 11.20 when Ryan Sidebottom ran in to bowl from the Peasholm Park End. Unkempt locks flopping in the breeze, the Yorkshire bowler looked uncommonly like a 17th century Puritan, an Anabaptist perhaps. It had already been a productive session for Sidebottom, who had dismissed Michael Lumb in his second over when the batsman groped at an away-swinger and edged a catch to Andy Hodd. Now Steven Mullaney played a shot almost at right angles to a very straight ball which whacked into his pad. Sidebottom swivelled and demanded that divine judgement be visited upon the unrighteous. Neil Mallender, who might be flattered by such a notion, obliged. The moving finger was raised and Mullaney moved on.Nottinghamshire were 48 for 4 when their opener was out and they had added only four more when Samit Patel attempted a brainless uppercut to a ball that was too close and too low for the shot. First slip Tim Bresnan took a two-handed head-high catch and Read’s men were 230 runs behind with half their batting gone. Sidebottom had taken three wickets for five runs in 12 balls. All this was greeted with cheers by the stallholders on the North Marine Road side until they contemplated the effects on their profits of a two-day finish. The Scarborough Festival is a celebration of all things Yorkshire but it’s about making a bit of brass, too: there is the Yorkshire Foundation, a Yorkshire Bread stall and the whole affair is sponsored by – you guessed it – Welcome to Yorkshire. Even Jack Russell, that artist among wicketkeepers turned the real McCoy with brushes, makes sure there are pictures of the ground under his strawberry gazebo.Sadly for those wearing green and yellow, the morning was no sort of celebration of all things Notts. Chris Read, their very present help at all times of trouble, was caught at cover by Alex Lees when attempting to pull a ball from Jack Brooks. Brendan Taylor, who risked cricketing vertigo by reaching double figures, inside-edged Steve Patterson onto his off pole and Bresnan cleaned up the tail. Notts lost their last eight wickets for 53 runs in 23 overs, their deficit was 188 and no member of Yorkshire’s attack had bowled more than seven overs. We waited for the follow-on to be enforced and Scarborough’s landladies held a summit meeting to consider the impact of a mass checkout. But, dear reader, they batted on. Instead of going for the quick kill, Yorkshire’s stand-in skipper, Gary Ballance, chose to hunt the stag to exhaustion. “We thought with a lead of 188, we didn’t want to bat last on this wicket,” he said. “We thought it better to get a big lead, rest the bowlers up and come out with a refreshed attack. We’ll look to get a lead of 500 or so, depending on the weather, and then our bowlers will be ready to go.”All the same, with rain forecast, Ballance’s decision surprised many, including some former first-class cricketers. Curiously, though, batting on was entirely in keeping with the spirit of the old-style Festival, when sides like TN Pearce’s XI, MCC and the tourists played first-class matches in which winning certainly mattered but had to be incorporated into the overarching aim of making sure games went the distance. So in the afternoon session, Yorkshire scored 113 runs off 35 overs. Lees levied a quartet of successive off-side fours off Mullaney before he was lbw to Brett Hutton for 30 and Adam Lyth had made a pleasant enough 41 when his leading edge was caught by the bowler, Luke Wood. In the evening session the lead was extended to 388 with Jake Lehmann and Jack Leaning passing up chances to make substantial scores but Ballance progressing ruthlessly to 75 not out.It all made fine watching for most of the spectators on a summer afternoon plucked from an Enid Blyton story in which everyone is safe and the children go home for macaroons and ginger beer. Certainly the spectators were not complaining: cricket is the true faith here and watching Yorkshire grinding opponents down is how they enjoy spending their days. And there was even talk of a pleasant epilogue to the cricket. It is rumoured that Ballance has been made a KGD (Knight of the Golden Dustpan) by Scarborough’s relieved landladies. He would be the first Old Harrovian to receive the honour.

Bangladesh seek to build on bright spots

While Bangladesh would have liked to have won more convincingly, there was plenty for them to draw heart from in their first ODI of the year

Isam: Afghanistan has been the story of the tour so far

Big picturePredictably, the first ODI ran close. Afghanistan were in the best position to win when they had eight wickets in hand and required 77 runs to win off the last ten overs. Bangladesh took over from that point, showing their steady temperament in a situation that required them not only to cut down the runs but also to pick up wickets. While Mahmudullah suggested that Bangladesh would have liked to have won more convincingly, there was plenty for them to draw heart from in their first ODI of the year. Shakib Al Hasan broke the big third-wicket stand between Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah, and gave away just one run in the 47th over when 28 were needed off the last four. Comeback men Taskin Ahmed and Rubel Hossain squeezed Afghanistan out of the match with regular yorkers in the last three overs. Captain Mashrafe Mortaza kept the rampant Afghanistan batsmen in check for most of his ten overs, while Taijul Islam looked decent as the second specialist left-arm spinner. When they batted, the home side would also have been encouraged by Tamim Iqbal, Imrul Kayes and Mahmudullah who looked in good form, though there will be some concern about Soumya Sarkar and Mushfiqur Rahim.Afghanistan, meanwhile, would be worried about their pace bowling; though Dawlat Zadran did finish with four wickets, both he and debutant Naveen-ul-Haq were expensive. The visitors would also like to see Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi get into the game a lot earlier than they did in the first game. Rahmat’s leg-spin is another option that captain Asghar Stanikzai might explore. The fielding from both sides sorely needs a lift as some easy catches were put down in the first match. But another thriller can be expected in Mirpur, with Afghanistan living up to the home crowd’s expectations as a competitive international opponent.Form guideBangladesh WWWWW (completed matches, most recent first)
Afghanistan LLWLWIn the spotlightImrul Kayes batted confidently and timed the ball well during his 37 off 53 in the first ODI. He displayed a new, adventurous side to his limited-overs batting, even if it meant chipping a few in air every now and then. He can be expected to bat the same way, and cement his place at No. 3.Rahmat Shah used his experience of playing domestic cricket in Bangladesh very well during his 93-ball 71 in the first game. He rotated the strike regularly with Hashmatullah Shahidi in a 144-run third-wicket stand that took Afghanistan to a very strong position. But it was his dismissal that turned the tide against Afghanistan. He would surely be keen to weigh in with more runs in the second ODI. Given his form, he might well do so.Team newsBarring injuries, Bangladesh shouldn’t change their winning combination. This would mean Mosaddek Hossain would have to wait a little longer for his ODI debut, while Nasir Hossain and Shafiul Islam would also remain on the sidelines.Bangladesh (probable): 1 Tamim Iqbal, 2 Soumya Sarkar, 3 Imrul Kayes, 4 Mahmudullah, 5 Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), 6 Shakib Al Hasan, 7 Sabbir Rahman, 8 Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), 9 Rubel Hossain, 10 Taijul Islam, 11 Taskin AhmedA possible change for Afghanistan could be to replace Naveen-ul-Haq with Karim Janat, bringing in one teenage fast bowler for another. On the other hand, Afghanistan might make allowances for Naveen’s understandable nerves on debut and give him another outing.Afghanistan (probable): 1 Mohammad Shahzad (wk), 2 Shabir Noori, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi, 5 Asghar Stanikzai (capt), 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Najibullah Zadran, 8 Rashid Khan, 9 Mirwais Ashraf, 10 Dawlat Zadran, 11 Naveen-ul-HaqPitch and conditionsThe Mirpur pitch was sluggish, but the four half-centuries in the first game showed that any batsman who was patient enough could bat comfortably. The forecast is for late afternoon rain in Dhaka.Stats and trivia Shakib Al Hasan is now the only bowler in world cricket to hold his country’s record for most wickets in all three formats Afghanistan have bowled out Bangladesh in all three encounters between the two sides If Bangladesh win tomorrow, it will be their 100th ODI winQuotes”He [Taskin] delivered what we needed him to do. Credit to him for how he came back. He could have had a completely bad day and that could have cost us the match.”

Phil Hay Drops Key Leeds United Manager Update

Leeds United could look to make Brendan Rodgers their new manager this summer, according to a key update from reliable journalist Phil Hay.

How did Rodgers fare at Leicester?

The Northern Irishman left Leicester City last month after a poor 2022/23 season, and was replaced by Dean Smith at the King Power Stadium. It was a sad end for him at the club, but there is still no doubt that he enjoyed a positive impact there overall.

Rodgers guided Leicester to FA Cup glory back in 2021, beating Chelsea 1-0 in the final at Wembley, and he also inspired them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League in consecutive seasons. The 50-year-old is currently without a job as he weighs up his options ahead of the summer, but he is unlikely to be without suitors, despite how things ended for him with the Foxes.

Leeds could well be searching for a new manager at the end of the season, with Sam Allardyce potentially only a short-term appointment, which is where Rodgers comes into play.

Brendan Rodgers

Could Rodgers become Leeds' next manager?

According to The Athletic's Hay, the former Liverpool boss could be on the Whites' agenda, should he be happy to potentially manage in the Championship next season:

"Should they go down, recently-sacked Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers is likely to come into the equation, at least in terms of the sort of coach they would want. Whether Rodgers is open to working in the EFL again, having led Swansea City up from it in 2011, is another matter altogether."

Rodgers could certainly be an exciting appointment by Leeds this summer, although as Hay mentions, a huge amount may depend on whether he is willing to drop down a division, assuming the Whites are relegated this weekend.

He famously came within touching distance of winning the Premier League title with Liverpool back in 2013/14, and his attack-minded nature could appeal to Leeds supporters, rather than Allardyce's more cautious style.

Rodgers has been hailed as an "unbelievable" manager by West Ham attacker Michail Antonio, with the pair working together at Reading years ago, and he is arguably someone with the required ability to take Leeds straight back into the top flight. He isn't perfect, with his defensive skills sometimes criticised – even in his Liverpool days – but he feels like a standout candidate should he want the job.

Wolves Could Sign Perfect Kilman Partner

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked to a defender ahead of the summer transfer window, as the 2022/23 season closes.

The Midlands club were saved mid-season by Julen Lopetegui, who took Wolves from the bottom of the table on Christmas day to a 13th-place Premier League finish.

The struggles are not over for the Spaniard despite the footballing calendar entering a break, as the club revealed struggles with FFP leading up to the summer window, which will jeopardise the finances the former Real Madrid manager assumed he would have.

Wolves have plenty of improvements to make on a limited budget, however, the latest link to the club would be a significant upgrade on a free transfer.

What’s the latest on Nacho Fernandez to Wolves?

As reported by Spanish outlet SPORT, Real Madrid legend Nacho Fernandez could be on the move to Molineux this summer.

The report states that the Premier League and joining Lopetegui at Wolves “tempts him”, having played under the boss with Los Blancos.

The Madrid-born ace’s contract will soon expire at the Bernabeu, with the defender opting to depart after spending his entire playing career at his boyhood club at a variety of levels.

What could Nacho Fernandez offer Wolves?

A defender that has made over 300 career appearances for a side as reputable as Real Madrid needs little introduction, with his experience and level of expertise a quality that would bolster any side.

The versatile defender, deployed mainly at centre-back, can play on both flanks at the back and showcases a range of attributes having already proven "a nightmare for Salah" at Europe's top table, as per Jamie Easton.

Despite nearing the latter stages of his playing career at 33-years-old, the defender could have a similar impact on Lopetegui’s budding Wolves defence as Thiago Silva at Chelsea.

The Brazilian signed for Chelsea at the age of 35, and has proved to be one of the most crucial players at Stamford Bridge, raising the level with his expertise in central defence.

While a coach can teach and nurture ability, one cannot replicate experience, which is what the £133k-per-week ace could bring to the struggling back line in abundance.

One player that would certainly benefit from the Madrid veterans' knowledge is Max Kilman, who at 26-years-old has excelled since trading Maidenhead United for Molineux in 2018.

The Englishman has been solid at the back for Lopetegui’s side, praised as being a “monster” since his emergence by members of the media.

Being in the earlier stages of his career, Kilman could benefit from being partnered by the five-time Champions League winner, who has played alongside some of the best defenders of this generation.

Nacho’s experience is far from the only exciting thing about the potential transfer, but his ability on the ball also, ranking as one of Europe's best central defenders in possessing over the past year.

As per FBref, the Spaniard averages a pass completion rate of 91.2% per 90, as well as executing 4.03 progressive passes per 90, highlighting his ability to play the ball from defence to advancing areas of the pitch.

A similar trait is shown by Kilman, who averages just below the Madrid defender with 3.46 progressive passes per 90, suggesting that the duo could flourish in their mirrored playing styles.

Hailed as being an “important” player by Zinedine Zidane, Nacho could be a favourable signing on a free transfer this summer for Lopetegui, who could model his defence around the experienced general.

Anderson expects winter workload to be managed

James Anderson has admitted he may need to sit out some Tests this winter if he is to cope with England’s demanding schedule.England are to play seven Tests in two months in Bangladesh and India. While Anderson, England’s record Test wicket-taker, insists he would like to be involved in every one, he accepts that, aged 34 and with many miles on the clock, he may to miss the occasional game to ensure he retains his effectiveness.Anderson was a key performer when England last played a Test series in India. While he claimed a modest-looking 12 wickets in the four Tests, MS Dhoni rated him the difference between the sides as England came from behind to win 2-1. No other seamer claimed more than four wickets. But Anderson has warned that, with so many Tests in such a short period, he will have to be “a bit sensible” in terms of managing his workload. He has endured a few absences due to injury in recent times, missing almost half of the 2015 Ashes due to a side strain, the start of the South Africa series with a calf injury and part of the Pakistan series with a shoulder injury. The signs that his heavy workload – among seamers, only Courtney Walsh, Glenn McGrath and Kapil Dev have bowled more deliveries in Test cricket – are beginning to tell.”It’s a tough one because as a player if you’re fit you want to play, simple as that, no matter what the format you’re desperate to play,” Anderson told Press Association Sport.”But there may well come a time when it will get managed. At 34 I probably have to manage myself, or be managed, quite well. You want, if possible, to play every Test but India is going to be five back to back and that’s a huge ask for any bowler.”We’re in constant discussion with the captain, coach and medical staff about the best scenario. We’ve got good backroom staff who are very switched on and it will be managed well.”You take it game by game. You can’t say now ‘I’ll miss the second Test of five’, because you might bowl 15 overs in the first game. So you be a bit sensible and there will probably come a point where we try to look and maybe I’ve got to sit out.”Anderson carried a heavy burden with the seam bowling in 2012 – Stuart Broad did not take a wicket in the series and was dropped after two Tests – but he expects greater assistance this time. The England team may well contain two seam-bowling allrounders – Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes – while Moeen Ali’s ability to bat in the top six provides the opportunity to play an extra bowler if required. But while Anderson welcomes the assistance, he still expects to have an important role to play in India and Bangladesh.”We’re fortunate now, with Stokesy and Mo, it looks after the seamers,” he said. “That’s a real bonus for us because it has been difficult in India when we’ve had just two seamers and two spinners.”But there’s a danger to go over there and expect spinners to take the wickets. There are still opportunities as a seamer, the ball swings out there and reverse swings later in the innings. You have to look at the positives and think how you can make an impact.”

Arsenal Could Sign New Ozil In £21m Wonderkid

Arsenal could be set to swoop for a young superstar this summer, in an effort to emulate a former favourite around north London.

What's the latest on Arda Guler to Arsenal?

That's according to Turkish-Football, who revealed that Gunners sporting director Edu Gaspar is leading the race for Fenerbahce's 18-year-old sensation Arda Guler, alongside top-flight rivals Newcastle United.

With both having made contact with the representatives of the player and an official offer in the works, it is expected that both Premier League clubs will move as quickly as possible as a summer of widespread interest looms.

Although highly thought-of at his current club, should the right offer arise they would definitely consider sanctioning his exit. Last summer it was reported that a fee of around €25m (£21m) would be enough to tempt the Turkish outfit.

Who is Arda Guler?

To emphasise the bright future of this teenage sensation, the creative attacking midfielder has consistently been likened to former Emirates hero Mesut Ozil.

GOAL journalist Tom Maston even wrote on Twitter in 2022:

"A second professional goal for Fenerbahce wonderkid Arda Guler (2005) today. Mesut Ozil may have been ostracised, but ‘the new Ozil’ is thriving at Fener".

Given the moments of magic the former German international often conjured in north London, being linked with someone of his ilk would surely have fans pleading for such a switch. Across his 254 appearances for Arsenal, the 34-year-old scored 44 times and assisted a further 79, which included that infamous 2015/16 campaign where he posted 28 goal contributions in all competitions, including 19 assists in the league.

Arsene Wenger lauded him as the "complete athlete" during that year, to compound him as a true star for the legendary Frenchman.

Meanwhile, Guler has been silently thriving in his homeland to earn such a comparison, recording six goals and six assists in all competitions much to the delight of legendary midfielder Andrea Pirlo.

The Italian icon was full of praise for the teenager, noting:

"Arda Guler is a very talented player. He has the potential to play anywhere in the world. He has quality, he can read the game well, and he has great technique. If he keeps developing his game, there is no limit to his potential."

mesut-ozil-arsenal

He dresses his impressive figures up with that same classy play style that earned Ozil such praise, drifting onto that favoured left foot with poise and elegance. This explains exactly why Edu will be so keen to push through this deal.

Whilst this new-look Arsenal side has earned a steely resolve, largely removing the soft underbelly that had plagued them in the past, the Emirates crowd remains a keen appreciator of a silky operator.

Therefore, placing Guler before them would surely make him an instant favourite too, seeking to follow in the footsteps of the World Cup-winning maestro.

Sri Lanka allrounder Thisara Perera was fined 15% of his match fee while Australia fast bowler Mitchell Starc received an official reprimand for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct in separate incidents during the second ODI in Colombo on Wednesday.Perera was fined for his reaction after dismissing David Warner in the second over of Australia’s chase. He was found to have breached article 2.1.7 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batsman.” Perera finished with returns of 3 for 33 off five overs in Sri Lanka’s 82-run victory. The incident for which Starc was reprimanded took place after the bowler, having finished an over, threw the ball towards Dinesh Chandimal at the striker’s end, despite the batsman not attempting a run. Starc was found guilty of violating Article 2.1.1, which deals with “conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game”.The charges were brought by on-field umpires Michael Gough and Raveendra Wimalasiri, third umpire Aleem Dar and fourth umpire Ranmore Martinesz.

Fabrizio Romano Drops Update On Arsenal’s Pursuit Of 22 y/o "True Warrior"

Arsenal have not made a proposal for Galatasaray right-back Sacha Boey, despite contrary recent reports, according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Will Arsenal sign Boey?

Boey could well be on his way to the Premier League this summer, amid interest from both Crystal Palace and Arsenal, with the former reportedly expected to make a bid, having allocated €15m (£13m) for the potential transfer.

Arsenal have also been linked with a move for the right-back, with reports indicating they are "seriously interested" in bringing him to the Emirates Stadium, and a more recent update has detailed they have even lodged an official bid.

The Gunners are said to have made an offer of €20m (£17m) for the Galatasaray ace, but the Turkish club are demanding €25m (£21.5m) if they are to part with one of their prized assets this summer.

However, Romano has since taken to Twitter to dismiss these reports, alleging that Mikel Arteta is yet to come to the table with a bid for the 22-year-old. The transfer guru said:

"Arsenal have not made any proposal for Sacha Boey at this stage, despite reports. Been told there was no meeting with his new agents, just one of many players appreciated but not a negotiation as things stand.

"Galatasaray want more than €20m for their right back."

Who is Sacha Boey?

Given that Arsenal have Champions League football on offer next season, they should be well-placed to sign the Frenchman, if they are willing to meet Galatasaray's demands, and he could be an excellent addition to Arteta's squad.

With Ben White expected to play in a central role next year, the Gunners will need to add some more depth at right-back, and Boey has performed very well for Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Lig so far this season.

sacha-boey-transfer-gossip-arsenal-cedric-arteta-edu

Having averaged a WhoScored match rating of 7.28, the full-back is ranked as the Turkish side's second-best performer in the squad, showcasing his defensive ability by averaging 2.7 tackles per game, the joint-highest figure in the squad.

Given that he has four assists to his name, the Montreuil-born defender can also be a threat on the front foot, and he is strong in the air, averaging 2.2 aerials won per game. Lauded as a "true warrior" by members of the media, Boey has displayed he is ready to make the step up to the Premier League, and it could be wise for Arsenal to pursue a deal this summer.

23 y/o Fits Description Of Ornstein Arsenal Update

Journalist David Ornstein has revealed that Arsenal may be looking to sign an "auxiliary" defender who can play both at right-back and as a central defender.

What are Arsenal's summer transfer plans?

Unfortunately for the Gunners, it seems one of the key reasons they haven't been able to win the Premier League this season is due to a lack of depth.

Indeed, when William Saliba and Takehiro Tomiyasu both got injured against Sporting CP in the Europa League, Mikel Arteta's defensive options were dramatically weakened.

And in the time since that game, Arsenal have relinquished their spot at the top of the table to Manchester City, who were confirmed as champions on Saturday.

With that being the case, it's no shock to learn that Arsenal want to add depth this summer but it seems as though one transfer could try and kill two birds with one stone.

Indeed, while talking on the FIVE YouTube channel, Ornstein explained the potential summer plan.

He said: “Now, they may have some young prospects coming through, but it's harder than ever for them to establish themselves. And so, do Arsenal look to bring in somebody at right-back?

"I've heard suggestions [of a target], maybe that can also play a centre-half as well if needed. So yeah, a bit of an auxiliary centre-back, right-back who can play in both [positions] – not too dissimilar to Tomiyasu.”

Why do Arsenal want Mohamed Simakan?

Interestingly enough, one potential target has already emerged as a potentially perfect fit for this particular plan with Leipzig's Mohamed Simakan being linked with a move by journalist Ed Aarons.

The 23-year-old is known for his versatility due to his ability to play at right-back of centre-back – this has even earned him comparisons with a French defensive legend.

mohamed-simakan-transfer-gossip-arsenal-saliba-arteta-edu

Indeed, the Bundesliga's official website noted a similarity to footballing hero Lillian Thuram, writing: "An impressive athlete blessed with pace and power, Simakan is comfortable at full-back or as a centre-back in either a back three or four. He can even play in midfield if required, and that effortless flexibility is one of the reasons he has been compared to France's 1998 World Cup-winning star Thuram."

With that being the case, it certainly sounds as though either Simakan or a player just like him will be a real consideration for the Gunners this summer, and when you look at how defensive injuries derailed their current season, it makes a lot of sense for this particular area of the pitch to be strengthened.
