The transfer season is a mixed time for managers. On the one hand, it’s their chance to link up with players they’ve always dreamed of working with. On the other, however, they are occasionally left with the decision of banishing players to the U23s, or watching on as a brutal transfer request is slammed on their desk first thing on a Monday morning. Some handle it better than others when it comes to the questions surrounding a player’s future, too. Whilst some managers keep their cards close to their chest, others opt for the killer approach of throwing the departing player out the door in incredibly public fashion. In the case of Ange Postecoglou, he has handled things very well when it comes to the rumours linking Harry Kane with a move to Bayern Munich this summer.
What did Ange Postecoglou say?
Speaking in his first press conference, Postecoglou joked about how long it took him to be asked about Kane, claiming that his staff has a sweepstake running regarding it.
He told Hayters TV: “So it’s question three, it was [to ask about] Harry, was it? Okay, we were running a pool with the coaches. I think Mile Jedinak won actually.
“I had over six because I thought you’d care more about me than Harry.”
The witty response, which received laughs around the room, came after the new Spurs boss held a pool with his coaching staff on how many questions it would take for a journalist to ask about Kane. The Australian lost by some distance, as it took just three questions for the star striker’s future to come into the conversation.
Going on to speak about the rebuild needed at Tottenham Hotspur, the former Celtic manager said, via The Guardian: “When there is resistance, it slows the process down. What I’ve made clear is it won’t change the process, it won’t change me.
“It’ll maybe derail it for a little bit but it won’t derail it for long because I won’t allow it. The quicker they jump on the train, the quicker we’ll get to our destination.”
How many career goals does Kane have?
Kane’s importance to Spurs cannot be reiterated enough, but if you need reminding, it’s key to note that the England captain has scored 354 senior career goals, with 280 of those coming for the North London club. The fact is, he has been one of the best in his position for a number of years, and is one of the best strikers in Premier League history.
So, with that said, if Postecoglou was forced to replace Kane this summer, it would be no easy task, especially given Spurs’ lack of European football next season.
According to Florian Plettenberg of Sky Sports, Bayern Munich have made a second bid of €80m (£68.32m), plus add-ons for the Spurs striker, who reportedly wants to make the move.
As things stand, Kane has just one year left on his current contract at the club, and could leave for free next summer. From a Spurs perspective, losing their star man would potentially be a disaster, but losing him for free could be catastrophic too.
This could explain why, according to The Telegraph, Kane will be offered a mammoth £400k-p/w contract if he does commit his future to Spurs.
The rebuild needed in North London could be funded by the striker’s potential move away. Though, with plenty of twists left in the current transfer window, we may well see Kane opt to stay put in the Premier League.
Nottingham Forest have “an interest in sounding out” Callum Hudson-Odoi this summer if they cannot secure the signature of another Premier League winger Steve Cooper is interested in, claims transfer insider Dean Jones.
Is Callum Hudson-Odoi joining Nottingham Forest?
It was a successful first season back in the Premier League for The Garibaldi last year as they managed to secure their safety in their penultimate game thanks to a brilliant 1-0 victory over title-chasing Arsenal at the City Ground.
With their top-flight status assured for another year, the Midlands club have once again turned to the transfer market as they look to firmly establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in English football.
According to the Evening Standard, the side are confident in luring Brazilian winger Willian away from London after his contract at Fulham expired this month. However, should that deal not materialise, they have a backup, Chelsea’s Hudson-Odoi.
The Tricky Trees are reportedly amongst the favourites to land the 22-year-old, with Cooper a ‘huge fan’ of the player after working with him at the under-17 World Cup before, per Football Transfers.
The Wandsworth-born dynamo’s £120,000-a-week contract expires in 12 months, and with the Blues preferring to sell him over another loan, a bid in the region of £20m could be enough to secure his services, also per Football Transfers.
Callum Hudson-Odoi
The two-time European Champions might face some stiff competition from the continent, however, as according to Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla, Serie A side and Champions League contenders Lazio are said to be interested in the young Englishman.
What has Dean Jones said about Hudson-Odoi?
Jones pointed out that whatever Hudson-Odoi decides to do this summer, he will have to do it quickly, as he will not feature for the Blues next year. He mentions Lazio as a potential destination but believes Forest could offer him a way to stay in the Premier League should they fail to land top target Willian.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, he said: “Hudson-Odoi needs to find a solution pretty soon as he’s not going to figure for Chelsea next season.
“It’s a case now of being very open-minded. He’s been to Germany on loan, and there are possibilities in the Bundesliga, for sure, while he’s also being linked to Lazio. I have little doubt he could go to Serie A and shine – just as Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic are hoping to.
“But there might still be a way for him to get a chance in the Premier League – we cannot discount that at this stage. One option I’ve heard that really might open up is at Nottingham Forest. They have been enquiring over Willian and, if that does not progress, I am led to believe they are interested in properly sounding out Hudson-Odoi.
“They are not afraid to go after big names, and it’s clear they intend to show ambition right now as this second season in the Premier League is a real chance for the club to begin establishing themselves in the top flight.”
Who else are Nottingham Forest linked to?
Outside of tricky wingers, Forest are also looking for a new goalkeeper.
According to The Athletic, the primary target in that department remains Manchester United’s Dean Henderson, who has returned to the Red Devils for preseason.
Nottingham Forest loaneeDean Henderson
However, should a deal for the Englishman not be possible, the club have already identified Wolverhampton Wanderers shot-stopper Jose Sa as a potential alternative.
The Portuguese keeper has already spent two seasons with Forest’s sister club Olympiacos between 2018 and 2021, so there is a relationship there with the club’s ownership.
Ultimately, a move to Forest could suit all parties involved, giving Hudson-Odoi the platform to rediscover the form that led Frank Lampard to label him “special”, and Cooper could have a potentially world-class winger on his hands if he gets back to his best.
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal to sign 18-year-old Blackburn Rovers defender Ashley Phillips, according to reports. The North London club have reportedly seen their bid accepted by the Championship side.
What's the latest on Spurs and Ashley Phillips?
Spurs have seen their £3m bid for Phillips accepted, according to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic, with the teenager set to make the step-up to the Premier League after he showed signings of breaking through at Blackburn last season, making eight appearances.
As per Eccleshare, the youngster is set to undergo a medical in the next 24 hours, before joining up with the rest of the Spurs squad for their pre-season tour.
His arrival will also reportedly not get in the way of the Lillywhites' plans to sign at least one more senior centre-back this summer, with the likes of former loanee Clement Lenglet linked with a permanent move.
Of course, at such a young age, the central defender may well find himself refined to the youth sides, rather than thrown straight into the deep end of Ange Postecoglou's first-team.
Phillips will become the fourth signing of the Postecoglou era, following in the footsteps of Manor Solomon, Guglielmo Vicario, and James Maddison, as the North London side undergo another rebuild under yet another manager.
Who is Ashley Phillips?
It's a fairly impressive move for Phillips at just 18-years-old, but it's one that he's earned after impressing for Blackburn last season.
The defender was the subject of plenty of praise throughout the last few years, with former manager Tony Mowbray saying, via the Lancashire Telegraph, back in 2021: “He’s an amazing footballer and he is going to be a mega footballer I’m pretty sure, but he’s a very young boy.
“He’s a 6’3, 6’4 magnificent cut of a guy, fast as lightning, composed with the ball, aggressive. I think this football club have a footballer on their hands, and we have to manage his introduction into our team as best we can. I just brought him to give him some experience.”
Statistically speaking, too, Phillips wasn't far off the numbers that Japhet Tanganga produced in his limited game-time last season – even making more blocks than the current Spurs man, according to FBref.
The 24-year-old Tanganga is a good example of how Spurs' academy process can benefit young players, too. Coming through the academy, though injuries have stalled his progress, Tanganga was a consistent fixture in the side at one stage.
For Phillips, it will be a case of taking his chances as and when they come, starting with pre-season. The next few weeks will give him a great chance to learn from some of his teammates ahead of the campaign, and perhaps he can nudge his way in on some of Tanganga's minutes, or even throw doubt over the need for a signing like Lenglet.
When it comes to competitions such as the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, we may see Phillips thrown into the side by Postecoglou, as we get a glimpse of the player that the teenager has the potential to become.
Journalist Alasdair Gold has tipped Yves Bissouma to "thrive" at Tottenham Hotspur next season following an impressive start to pre-season.
What did Gold say?
There was great expectation when Bissouma arrived in north London following several impressive years at Brighton & Hove Albion.
Much like Alexis Mac Allister and Moises Caicedo this summer, there was a significant amount of hype surrounding a Brighton star moving on to 'bigger and better things' after having made such an impact on the south coast.
A deal of £35m including possible add-ons was enough to convince the Seagulls to sell and Bissouma was supposedly the answer to Tottenham's lack of grit in the centre of the park. The Mali international was meant add some much-needed bite to Antonio Conte's midfield.
However, things didn't go to plan. The 26-year-old made a slow start to the campaign and was being utilised as a substitute more than a starter in a Spurs side that was picking up points despite some questionable performances.
As 2023 rolled around, Bissouma still struggled for minutes and things would get much worse due to an ankle injury that required surgery. He spent 15 matches in the treatment room and only returned for the final four games of the Premier League season, making appearances in three.
A new season and manager provides new hope for the defensive-midfielder, who has already joined up with Spurs for pre-season.
According to Alasdair Gold, who was speaking on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Bissouma has looked sharp in training so far and the journalist believes he has all the tools to succeed at Spurs next year.
"The guy that really for me, only purely on watching the [training] videos and it might be that Spurs have not shown him being absolutely appalling, but the player who looks so sharp for me is Bissouma. Oh my goodness." said Gold.
"Some of the touches he's taken. The biggest thing for me is he looks happy and full of confidence. He looks like he is in a system that is probably going to help him thrive as well under Postecoglou."
He added: "It's all set up isn't it really for Bissouma to thrive this season, hopefully."
Bissouma only managed 28 appearances in all competitions last campaign and will be desperate to get more minutes under his belt this term. Impressing Postecoglou in pre-season is of paramount importance.
The former Lille man could feel like a new signing for Tottenham if Postecoglou can get him fit and firing next season. Tottenham were often caught short in midfield due to injuries to Bissouma and teammate Rodrigo Bentancur last year.
Postecoglou generally likes to play with a three-man midfield, unlike Conte who tended to opt for two in the centre of the park, meaning opportunities should be rife for the Mali international.
Which midfielders are joining Tottenham?
With Harry Winks having joined Leicester City and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rumoured with a Spurs exit, Tottenham could be light in midfield again next season.
22-year-old Oliver Skipp impressed last year, standing out as a potential bright spark, while 20-year-old Pape Matar Sarr is arguably not ready to be playing weekly for the Lilywhites.
Beyond that Spurs are left with Bissouma and Bentancur who will certainly need some help next season, especially given the latter is still undergoing his rehabilitation period at Hotspur Way.
Two loanees will return, however, with Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso coming back to Spurs from stints at Napoli and Villarreal respectively. What Postecoglou's plans are for the pair remains to be seen but given the Australian reportedly rejected a £17m bid for Ndombele per L'Equipe (via Sport Witness), maybe the Frenchman has a future at Tottenham after all.
Of course, Spurs have signed James Maddison already, although he is an attacking midfielder, and the Lilywhites will want to bolster their midfield options further in the market to help Postecoglou mould Tottenham in his image.
There are not too many midfielders currently being linked with Spurs, however, with the search for a centre-back taking priority at the moment.
Jamie Porter led the Essex attack in bowling out Hampshire twice inside three sessions for a three-day win to move to the top of the Specsavers County Championship first division, at least for 24 hours
ECB Reporters Network21-May-2017 ScorecardJamie Porter led the Essex attack in bowling out Hampshire twice inside three sessions for a three-day win to move to the top of the Specsavers County Championship first division, at least for 24 hours.Porter took seven wickets in the match for 45 runs, including career-best first-class figures of 5 for 24 in the first innings, as Hampshire, following on 245 runs behind, disintegrated for a second time.Hampshire had started the day 268 runs short of making Essex bat again. They were all out for 115 – having been 34 for 7 during the second evening – and fared little better when sent straight back in, losing by an innings with more than four sessions to spare. Essex collected 22 points for their efforts, Hampshire just one.Only Lewis McManus showed an aptitude for the fight in both innings, following his first-innings 39 with 37. George Bailey weighed in with 32, but the rest dropped like flies. South African Rilee Rossouw bagged a pair. Offspinner Simon Harmer only bowled five overs in the match, yet claimed figures of 3 for 23.Hampshire’s second innings got off to the worst possible start when Liam Dawson shuffled across his stumps in Porter’s second over and was trapped lbw to one that angled in. James Vince tried to move things along and had reached 17 when he drove Neil Wagner forcefully into the covers where Nick Browne took the catch low down.Michael Carberry had survived a let-off on two when Tom Westley floored an in-and-out chance into his midriff at second slip. It did not prove too costly as Carberry went to Harmer’s first ball in the match, the last one before lunch, when he was pinned lbw. He had occupied the crease for 20 overs while scoring six runs.Harmer’s second ball after lunch accounted for Rossouw, plumb leg before, for a second duck of a match in which he faced the grand total of three balls. Lewis McManus showed the same stickability as his first-innings 39 and had reached 37 second time around when he hooked a short ball from Wagner to Quinn at long leg.Kyle Abbott was unable to repeat his first-innings heroics, failing to beat Ryan ten Doeschate’s direct hit from mid-on to the non-striker’s end. Gareth Berg, on 24, played all round one from Harmer. Mason Crane launched Tom Westley for six and next ball skied one to ten Doeschate at mid-on and it was all over 15 minutes before tea.Essex had wrapped up the Hampshire first innings inside nine overs in the morning with Porter taking two of the three wickets to fall.McManus and Abbott had staged a rearguard action with an eighth-wicket partnership of 75 in 20 overs to lift Hampshire from the doldrums of 34 for 7 and into three figures. However, both fell inside seven balls from Porter.Abbott had just pulled Quinn over midwicket for six when Porter got one to swing in and catch the edge of Abbott’s forward prod for Alastair Cook to take the catch at first slip. McManus, having faced 74 balls for 39, followed when caught in two minds by a ball that slanted past his indeterminate movement to take off-stump out of the ground.Fidel Edwards did not hang about for long, Westley completing the catch at second slip at the second attempt to give Wagner his first wicket of the game.
West Ham United have an "interest" in former Manchester United captain and England international Harry Maguire, but wages could be an issue, claims Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.
Is Harry Maguire joining West Ham United this summer?
It has been a busy summer in east London so far, not due to any incomings, mind you, but due to the intense and protracted negotiations over the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal, which has earned West Ham a tidy £105m.
Unsurprisingly, it looks like the club will be putting that influx of cash to use immediately this summer, with a swathe of players being touted for a move to the East End.
A lot of the names linked with a move to the London Stadium at the moment are midfielders, for fairly obvious reasons, with Fulham's Joao Palhinha, Ajax's Edson Alvarez and Southampton's talismanic captain James Ward-Prowse all players the Irons are interested in.
However, with the club leaking 55 goals in the league last year and finishing just six points above the relegation zone, several defenders have also been linked with a move to the Irons – the most recent being United centre-back Maguire.
Harry-Maguire-in-action-for-Manchester-United
According to The Guardian, the Red Devils are open to offers for their £80m man after Erik ten Hag informed his defender that he wasn't a part of his plans, something made abundantly clear by the removal of the captaincy earlier this week.
The Hammers have emerged as one of the teams interested in rescuing the former Leicester City man from his unfortunate situation at Old Trafford this summer, but 'see little value' in paying a transfer fee for the 30-year-old and are equally concerned over his significant pay packet, as per Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth.
He explained the situation live on Sky Sports News, saying:
"They're looking to strengthen in defence. We mentioned Harry Maguire already. There is an interest in Harry Maguire, they're exploring a loan, they're exploring a permanent deal as well. Wages, though, could prove to be an issue."
How much does Harry Maguire earn?
The former Foxes star earns a seriously hefty pay packet, even for a player at Manchester United.
According to Spotrac, the former captain sits comfortably within the club's top ten earners, occupying the number seven spot and taking home a tidy £189,904 a week – or £9,875,000 a year.
It's easy to understand why these wages would be deemed a problem for the Hammers, especially if they opted for just a loan, as their highest earner is Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paqueta, who earns £150,000 a week at the London Stadium.
Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.
The Irons' best-paid defender is Kurt Zouma, who takes home a weekly wage of £120,000, which is probably what Maguire can expect to be paid should he make the move down to the capital.
While it's obviously a massive pay cut, it might give the 6 foot 4 titan the fresh start and playing time he needs to get back to his "fantastic" best and move on from his underwhelming spell at the Theatre of Dreams.

James Vince has been named as captain of England Lions for their one-day series with South Africa A next month. Vince is one of four full England internationals in the 13-man squad, alongside Steven Finn, Ben Duckett and Liam Dawson. The core of the squad is the same as that which toured Sri Lanka earlier this year, with the addition of Essex batsman Dan Lawrence – who wins his first call-up – and Sussex quick George Garton. The Lions will play three unofficial ODIs against South Africa A, starting on June 1 at Trent Bridge.
England Lions squad
James Vince (capt), Daniel Bell-Drummond, Sam Curran, Tom Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Steven Finn, Ben Foakes, George Garton, Dan Lawrence, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton
The series coincides with the start of the Champions Trophy and James Whitaker, England’s national selector, said it provided “the opportunity to keep our standby players in white-ball action” during the early stages of the tournament.”The quality of the squad we have selected reflects well on the strength in depth we now have in 50-over cricket, which has emerged through the county game,” Whitaker said. “All the players in this squad will have the 2019 World Cup in their sights, and playing for the Lions offers them the platform to show what they can do.”In addition to his considerable captaincy experience with Hampshire, James Vince has led the Lions before, to an excellent series victory against South Africa A in early 2015 and again when they played 50-over and T20 series against Pakistan A in Dubai in the winter of 2015-16 – and he also impressed in captaining the South to victory in the North-South Series earlier this year. He is a good tactical reader of the game.”We were also mindful in selecting this squad that the series coincides with an important round of matches in the Specsavers County Championship. As ever we are grateful to the counties for their support, and for appreciating the importance of the Lions programme in developing players for international cricket.”Several counties will be affected by Lions call-ups, notably Hampshire, who will lose Vince and Dawson for their game against Warwickshire. Surrey, who have three players in the squad, are not playing in the round of fixtures beginning on June 2, and neither are Essex nor Kent. After the one-day series, the Lions will play an unofficial Test against South Africa A at Canterbury on June 21-24, and then a three-day warm-up fixture against the full South Africa touring side from June 29, with the squads to be named next month.

ECB Reporters Network01-Jun-2017 ScorecardDawid Malan finished unbeaten on 125•Getty ImagesMiddlesex team-mates Steven Finn and Dawid Malan shared the individual honours as England Lions took the lead in their three-match series against South Africa A with a clinical team performance at Trent Bridge.Finn took three wickets in an eight-ball burst and there were two wickets each for Tom Curran, Craig Overton and Liam Dawson as the tourists were dismissed for 268 despite significant contributions from opener Reeza Hendricks, who made 79, and wicketkeeper Heino Kuhn, with 81 not out. Then Malan stroked an unbeaten 125, his third century in nine one-day innings for the Lions, to secure a nine-wicket win with more than nine overs to spare. He faced 110 balls and hit 15 fours and a six.Ben Duckett, who had already taken a spectacular diving catch, gave the Lions reply a flying start with a 43-ball half century. The Northamptonshire left-hander fell lbw to the left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi for 69 in an opening stand of 134 inside 18 overs. But Kent’s Daniel Bell-Drummond, who has been so consistent for the Lions in one-day cricket both in Sri Lanka in the winter and in last summer’s tri-series, joined Malan to maintain the momentum in an unbroken partnership of 135. Bell-Drummond ended with 62 from 76 balls with four fours, the third time in four one-day innings for the Lions he has passed 50.James Vince won the toss and chose to field on a fine Nottingham morning, and it was his early introduction of Dawson’s left-arm spin which broke South Africa’s opening stand. JJ Smuts was bowled swinging across the line at his third ball, and in the next over Overton dismissed the dangerous Theunis de Bruyn courtesy of Ben Foakes’s tumbling low catch to leave the tourists on 42 for 2.Hendricks and Temba Bavuma, who is due to join the senior South Africa squad for their Test tour of England later in the summer, responded with an intelligent third-wicket partnership of 95 for the third wicket. It was Dawson again who made the breakthrough, winning an lbw decision against Hendricks to dismiss the experienced opener for 79 from 73 balls. Again the Lions made it a double strike in the next over, as Tom Curran found some extra bounce to surprise the diminutive Bavuma, and Liam Livingstone caught his top-edged cut running towards the point boundary. That was a good catch but it was eclipsed by Duckett’s effort to dismiss South Africa’s captain Khaya Zondo 10 overs later, one-handed diving full length to his right to give Overton his second wicket. Then Finn took over, trapping Mangaliso Mosehle leg before and seaming the ball away to find the outside edge of first Sisanda Magala, then Shamsi. The Curran brothers, who had shared the new ball, then did likewise with the last two wickets, although they were separated by a stand of 44 between Dane Paterson and Kuhn, a 33-year-old with seven T20 international appearances.Tom Curran earned fine figures of 2 for 39 from his 10 overs, taking his tally of one-day wickets for the Lions to 24 in 12 matches, and Dawson ended with 2 for 41.
