Yasir six-for edges Pakistan ahead on testing day

Shai Hope battled to a gritty 90, leading West Indies into a handy lead, before Yasir Shah claimed another six-wicket haul to push Pakistan ahead on an attritional fourth day

It was a memorable day of Test cricket at the Kensington Oval, but for West Indies, it was a cruel finish. After all, West Indies – led by a resolute 90 from Shai Hope that lasted over five hours – made Pakistan’s bowlers graft and toil for the majority of the day, but the defining period will be five minutes of chaos that saw his side lose three wickets in eight balls for one run. It might yet lose them a game they have grated their way back into on more than one occasion, but with the lead already 183 with one wicket in hand, the Test is still alive. Yasir Shah claimed another six-wicket haul to lead Pakistan’s fightback in the final hour. With West Indies leading by 154 runs with six wickets still in hand, thoughts may already have been turning to an early declaration on the final day. But all of a sudden, Hope sought to cover drive a flighted Yasir delivery through the air, perfectly picking out Azhar Ali at cover. The next ball saw Vishaul Singh, the other set batsman, drag an inswinging delivery from Mohammad Abbas onto his stumps. Six deliveries on, Jason Holder poked at one from Yasir, and even as the light eroded, Younis Khan was never going to drop that. There was still enough time for West Indies’ last recognised batsman – Shane Dowrich – to edge one that ballooned up for an easy catch to second slip. Yasir dismissed Alzarri Joseph soon after to take his innings tally to six, and West Indies’ hard work crumbled. They had begun the final session with the resoluteness that characterised their batting all day. The runs, which had begun to flow a little too freely, dried up after tea as Misbah operated spin from both ends, waiting for the new ball. The likelihood of a wicket seemed to recede with both Vishaul and Hope looking increasingly comfortable, and West Indies began to take hold of the game. Shadab came closest to a breakthrough with an lbw shout against Vishaul that Pakistan decided to review, only to be thwarted by the on-field umpire’s call. As a result, the breakthrough Yasir provided through Hope’s moment of ill-judgment will seem even more fateful, coming as it did at a time when the hosts were looking to bat Pakistan out of the game.Momentum in the first session had fluctuated, a half-century partnership between Kraigg Brathwaite and Hope steering West Indies into the lead. West Indies got off to a terrible start, having added only one run to their overnight score when Shimron Hetmyer, who had looked convincing on the third evening, was dismissed by Mohammad Amir. The manner of the wicket was identical to his dismissal in Jamaica, the ball seaming back in sharply to crash into the stumps.Hope and Brathwaite batted more positively after coming together, but just as it looked like West Indies might creep into the ascendancy once more, Brathwaite was undone by a combination of vicious spin from Yasir and staggering reflexes from Younis. Yasir pitched one well outside leg stump from around the wicket, which spun sharply across and clipped the shoulder of his bat. Younis dived to his right with agility and reflexes that belied his age, holding on to a splendid one-handed catch that could end up being as crucial as any runs he scores this game. The afternoon session was a cagey affair as Yasir resumed the session by bowling around the wicket again to exploit the rough, while Roston Chase and Hope kept him at bay. Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Amir kept chipping away laboriously from the other end, as Misbah appeared reluctant to trust a misfiring Shadab with runs at a premium. But it was Yasir’s persistence from around the wicket that finally paid off for Pakistan when he drew Chase into driving him on the up. Chase hadn’t been able to get to the pitch of the ball, and the drive came straight back to Yasir for an easy catch, giving Pakistan a breakthrough they needed badly.

Rangers Likely To Sign "Terrific" Midfielder

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly likely to sign Los Angeles FC midfielder Jose Cifuentes, but it remains to be seen when a move will go through.

Are Rangers signing Jose Cifuentes?

Michael Beale and Ibrox officials have acted quickly in the transfer window so far, with a number of new players brought to Glasgow ahead of the 2023/24 season.

Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell have all made the moves to Rangers on free transfers after leaving Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Norwich respectively.

Brighton forward Abdallah Sima has arrived on loan, and the club have also splashed the cash on signings from clubs abroad. Forward Sam Lammers arrived from Atalanta in a deal worth €3.5m, and another striker has recently penned Rangers terms.

The club confirmed on Thursday that they have signed Cyriel Dessers from US Cremonese on a four-year deal, with the 28-year-old thought to have cost around €5m.

Beale labelled the new centre-forward as an “excellent addition”, and attention could now turn to securing a summer swoop for Cifuentes.

The Ecuador international has been heavily linked with a move to Scotland and was ready to sign an Ibrox deal last month. Rangers submitted a bid looking to push through a transfer, and a further update has now emerged.

The Daily Record’s Mark Pirie shared a Rangers transfer state of play in the last 48 hours, where an update on Cifuentes was relayed. It is believed that Rangers remains the "likely destination" for the 24-year-old when he leaves LAFC, but it is yet to be decided if he will leave "this summer or when his contract expires in the winter."

Cifuentes has remained a regular for LAFC since the transfer window opened and has made 16 MLS appearances this year, with his contract set to expire when the season ends at the end of the year.

Ecuador midfielderJose Cifuentes.

Is Jose Cifuentes good?

Cifuentes appears to be at the top of his game with a career-high €12m Transfermarkt valuation and can play as a holding, central or attacking midfielder.

Sponsored by Nike, the LAFC man has made 118 appearances for the MLS side during his three-and-a-half-year stay, scoring 14 times and registering 19 assists.

He could well be a shrewd addition for Rangers at a low price due to his contract situation, with Tim Vickery, an expert on all things to do with South American football, calling the 24-year-old a "terrific" player after his 2019 exploits at the Under-20 World Cup.

"He was the beating heart of that side and I think he’s a terrific midfielder," said Vickey on talkSPORT.

"He’s strong, he’s got quality, he’s got a good engine – he’s one of the best all-round midfielders, potentially, that I’ve seen come out of South America in a while.

"This fellow Cifuentes strikes the ball well, moves across the field, strong in the tackle, strong on the ball, I like him a lot."

It looks as if a transfer remains on the cards, and who knows, with Dessers in the door, Rangers may now look at forcing through a summer move for Cifuentes instead of waiting until the New Year.

Chelsea Schedule New "Talks" To Sign £21m "Sensation"

Chelsea are set to hold a fresh round of discussions regarding a deal to sign Flamengo star Matheus Franca, according to reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

Following Mauricio Pochettino’s arrival, the boss has wasted no time in starting to create his new-look squad by having a mass clearout which has seen the confirmed departures of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, N’Golo Kante and Tiemoue Bakayoko.

RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku and Villarreal’s Nicolas Jackson have come in as senior recruits in the opposite direction, as per Transfermarkt.

Franca, who is primarily an attacking midfielder, has worked his way up through the ranks at the Maracana Stadium to become a regular feature of Jorge Sampaoli’s first-team, having made 53 senior appearances since entering the fold back in January 2022.

The Brazilian’s impressive performances in his homeland appear to have caught the eye of the Blues hierarchy after The Daily Mail reported that they are exploring a deal for the 19-year-old, who has also previously attracted interest from Premier League rivals Newcastle United, West Ham and Crystal Palace.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that the teenager is “keen on the move” to Stamford Bridge, and having been made aware of this, negotiations are expected to take place in the coming days to try and reach an agreement for his transfer.

Are Chelsea signing Franca?

Taking to Twitter, Romano revealed that Chelsea and Flamengo have organised discussions to see if they can find a middle ground on a switch for Franca. He wrote:

“Chelsea have scheduled new round of talks for Franca with Flamengo. Matheus, being negotiated for €20m fee while Flamengo want at least €25m (£21m). #CFC. Can confirm again Angelo Gabriel plan to fly to London this week then sign 6 year deal at Chelsea. €15m fee to Santos.”

Flamengo midfielder Matheus Franca.

Would Franca be a good signing?

Chelsea will recognise that Franca being just 19 years of age means he’d be a signing more so for the long-term future of the club, but he also looks more than ready to be involved with the first-team, so should he put pen to paper he would be a wonderfully exciting acquisition for Pochettino.

The Rio De Janeiro native, who’s sponsored by Nike, has posted 14 goal contributions (11 goals and three assists) in 58 appearances throughout his career so far and is a constant threat in the final third, ranking in the 97th percentile for most shots by players in his position and the 96th percentile for number of attacking touches in the opposition’s penalty area.

Flamengo’s “sensation”, as lauded by journalist Aaron Stokes, also has the ability to play in six various positions across the pitch, including everywhere across the frontline alongside his usual role in the centre of the park, so he would provide the boss with plenty of versatility.

Finally, Franca may only be a teenager but he’s already got a taste of success with two senior trophies to his name and there’s no doubt that he’s hungry for more, which is a goal that he could achieve should he decide to link up with the squad in SW6.

Chelsea may launch move for "extraordinary" £64m titan

Question marks still remain over Chelsea’s current striking options but they could soon have their new Didier Drogba, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Armando Broja still remains very young and hasn’t played any senior football since December after suffering a long-term knee injury.

Nicolas Jackson, Chelsea’s recent £32m signing is only a year older than Broja at 22 and despite a commendable campaign last year, he is a player with no Premier League experience it's unclear how he will adapt.

So far, the most high-profile attacking signing under Mauricio Pochettino has been Christopher Nkunku, who has joined Stamford Bridge from RB Leipzig.

The Frenchman has forged a formidable reputation in Germany, recording 90 goal contributions in 119 German league matches. However, there will be reluctance from the Chelsea faithful to completely rely upon Nkunku, as both Timo Werner and Kai Havertz arrived in West London having both dominated the Bundesliga but endured extremely underwhelming stints in Blue.

As a result, the 2021 Champions League winners are still linked with a host of attacking targets, and Dusan Vlahovic is a possible option.

What’s the latest on Dusan Vlahovic to Chelsea?

According to Alfredo Pedulla (via the Metro), Chelsea have asked about Vlahovic’s situation, but are yet to submit an offer to Juventus.

However, the Old Lady has supposedly confirmed that they will demand at least €75m (£64m), plus further performance-related bonus payments for the Serbian.

Speaking to Football FanCast, Brown was asked what type of Vlahovic was most similar to and said:

“There is certainly an interest in Vlahovic. I've been trying to think who he's most like really. I don't really see him as a Harry Kane type at all.

“I think Vlahovic has become more of an all round pipe player but he's someone who is much more of a classic number nine really than Kane who likes to drift and roam a lot more these days.

“There's a little bit of lots of different people in Vlahovic. There's little bit of Batistuta and a little bit of Didier Drogba.

“He hasn't had a great time of it at his current club very highly rated when he went there but it hasn't worked out for him in the way I think he would have hoped partly because I'm not sure the system suits him that well and he does at times appear a bit isolated.”

Is Dusan Vlahovic like Didier Drogba?

Since Drogba departed the English capital, Chelsea are yet to find a consistent and dominant goal-scoring focal point. For a brief period, Diego Costa was an excellent player for the club, but his time at the club prematurely ended due to a fallout with Antonio Conte.

Didier Drogba with the Champions League trophy.

But Vlahovic has a similar style to Drogba – strong, physical, over 6 foot with a keen eye for a goal.

The 23-year-old has managed to score 61 goals in 140 Serie A appearances for Fiorentina and Juventus.

Last season was his least productive, scoring just 14 times in 42 matches, which is still more than Chelsea’s highest total, Kai Havertz with just nine.

The former Juventus midfielder Alessio Tacchinardi him as “extraordinary” and he has also forged an impressive record at international level, with 13 goals in 21 outings for Serbia.

Chelsea could represent a new challenge and experience for Vlahovic and due to their lack of a classic number nine, it could be a match made in heaven, and a chance for the talisman to replicate Drogba's heroics.

Abell draws value from another Lord's yawn fest

Somerset skipper Tom Abell found solace in another Lord’s yawn-fest with his first half-century of the Championship season but last season’s top two are still without a win

Visiting skipper Tom Abell was unbeaten with 71 while Steve Davies contributed 23 to an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 60.The hosts, who have now drawn the opening four matches of their lethargic title defence, banked 10 points. While Somerset, who finished runner’s up last season and have yet to win from their five starts, travelled west with 11 points.Batting again by 12.40pm and having secured a first-innings lead of 85, Somerset lost veteran opening bat Marcus Trescothick with only a single on the board. The former England left-hander ducked into a well-directed bouncer from Toby Roland-Jones to glove a looping catch to wicketkeeper John Simpson and exit without scoring. After lunch Dean Elgar, fresh from his first innings 158 that moved him beyond the 10,000-run milestone for his first-class career, had just posted his 500th run of the championship summer only to fall for 33. Hanging his bat out to dry against Tom Helm, the left-hander edged into the cordon to be snaffled by Ollie Rayner at second slip.Captains’ reactions

James Franklin (Middlesex): “We’re four games in and still haven’t got a win. We’ve performed well in a couple of games and in the others we haven’t been at out best. That said, we’ve shown good resilience throughout and have earned a good reputation around the country for that.”

Tom Abell (Somerset): “Expectations after last season were high and we’ve not lived up to them. Our batting has let us down too often this season, but we have to put that to bed now and concentrate on the next couple of games. We got ourselves into this position, it’s down to us now to dig out way out of it.”

Conversely, Somerset’s captain and No3, Abell, who went into the game with less than 100 runs to his name from his first four championship starts, set out to bat time in a bid to reverse his run of poor form. The Taunton-born right-hander featured in a stand of 42 with James Hildreth that ended when Hildreth departed to the third ball of the match from Middlesex off-spinner Paul Stirling. Making room and shaping to cut, Hildreth toe ended to the keeper and went for 23. Abell marched on, moving past his modest season’s best of 40 just before tea to reach his 10th first-class 50 from 111 balls and with six fours. The clouds converged soon after tea forcing a short break for bad light, after which Simpson, the Middlesex wicketkeeper, removed his pads, tossed the gloves to Stevie Eskinazi and sent down his maiden over in first-class cricket.Simpson, Nick Compton and Nick Gubbins took turns in serving up a series of long-hops and full-tosses to end the match on a somewhat farcical note.At the start of the final day, Middlesex had batted on for another 14 overs in adding 47 to their overnight, first-innings total.Somerset made their first breakthrough after an hour to break an eighth-wicket stand between Tom Helm and James Franklin that added 62 inside 21.2 overs. Playing back in defence to Lewis Gregory’s first ball of the day from the Pavilion End, Helm lost his off stump to a shooting off-cutter to depart for a career-best 28.Last man Tom Murtagh then sliced a drive off Gregory straight to cover point to leave Franklin marooned on 49 not out and end the innings. Adam Voges’ retirement on Sunday with a calf injury ensured he played no further part in the home reply although his unbeaten 86 had eventually helped take his side to within 85 of the Somerset first innings. The day started memorably for Middlesex opening batsman Nick Gubbins who received his commemorative, embroidered Middlesex county cap from India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar during a presentation in front of the pavilion. On an otherwise sombre Monday at Lord’s, however, the county flags flew at half-mast as a mark of respect to the victims of Saturday night’s London Bridge terror attack.

Man Utd "Preparing" Bid For Antony 2.0 In £60m Talent

Manchester United have identified Atalanta starlet Rasmus Hojlund as a leading candidate to solve their centre-forward woes and there has now been a significant update regarding the club's pursuit of the promising Dane…

What's the latest on Hojlund to Man United?

With a fee having seemingly been agreed with Inter Milan for the signing of Andre Onana, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that United are also readying an offer for Hojlund, with the Bergamo-based outfit set to demand around €70m (£60m) for the 20-year-old striker.

Writing on Twitter, the respected insider revealed: "Manchester United are preparing their opening bid for Rasmus Højlund! Told personal terms are 100% agreed. He wants United. Atalanta told United they don’t want 3 players offered in the deal after initial talks. Asking price around €65/70m. Next step: official bid."

Fellow journalist David Ornstein has also claimed that personal terms have been agreed with the former Sturm Graz ace, albeit with Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain also in the running for the youngster's signature.

How many goals has Rasmus Hojlund scored?

There is undeniably a real buzz surrounding the 6 foot 3 marksman at present, with the in-demand ace having notably been likened to fellow Scandinavian star Erling Haaland in recent times, while also being dubbed "scary quick" by journalist Sacha Pisani due to his searing pace on the counter.

For all that excitement, there must also be a sense of trepidation at the prospect of United forking out a rather hefty fee for a player who has scored fewer goals in his senior career thus far than Haaland managed in a single season last term at Manchester City (52), with the six-cap Denmark international having scored 27 club goals across his time at Copenhagen, Sturm Graz and at Atalanta.

For his current side, the highly-rated speedster hardly set the world alight last term after bagging ten goals in all competitions for the Serie A outfit, with that perhaps why the Red Devils were previously said to have baulked at his prior €100m (£86m) asking price.

Antony for Man United

That was the fee which Erik ten Hag and co forked out in order to snap up Antony from Ajax last summer, with there perhaps concern that Hojlund could prove to be another expensive gamble for the Old Trafford outfit, as the Brazilian has been to date.

Despite having prior experience of working under Ten Hag in Amsterdam, the 23-year-old trickster endured a difficult debut season in English football after scoring just four goals and providing only two assists in 25 Premier League games.

For a player with such a sizeable transfer fee, fans and pundits alike are likely to have expected more from the mercurial winger, with the pressure now on for Antony to truly make his mark in his second season at the club.

With United no doubt eager to see an end to their decade-long wait for the title, investing so heavily in another relatively unproven talent like Hojlund may not be the answer in the short-term, at least, in that pursuit of glory.

That's not to say that the pacy left-footer – and Antony – can't come good after enduring a bedding in period at the Theatre of Dreams, yet if it is immediate success that Ten Hag is craving, then it remains to be seen if Hojlund is the man to lead that charge.

Wahab ruled out of Champions Trophy with ankle injury

Pakistan fast bowler Wahab Riaz will take no further part in the Champions Trophy, after injuring his ankle while bowling against India on Sunday. A scan confirmed a “deltoid ligament complex”, and Wahab will need two weeks to recover.Wahab, who returned the most expensive figures in the Champions Trophy with 87 off 8.1 wicketless overs against India, twisted his ankle in his follow-through in the 46th over of the innings. The PCB has put in a request for a replacement player to the ICC Technical Committee. In four ODIs this year, Wahab has conceded 260 runs and taken two wickets at an average of 130 and an economy rate of 7.72.Apart from Hasan Ali and Mohammad Amir, who was also forced off the field with cramps against India, Pakistan’s only other fast bowling options in the squad are Junaid Khan and allrounder Faheem Ashraf.Pakistan’s second group game is against South Africa on June 7, at Edgbaston.

Tottenham: Spurs Hold Talks For "Game-Changer" Signing

Tottenham Hotspur have held talks to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer, according to reports.

Who will Spurs sign?

Spurs are actively seeking defensive reinforcements, among other positions in the squad, after already sealing agreements for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, playmaker James Maddison and winger Manor Solomon on a free transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk.

Vicario, who comes in as a long-term replacement for veteran number one Hugo Lloris, was soon followed by Maddison with the England international joining in a deal from Leicester City.

Solomon, after enjoying a brilliant run of form on loan at Fulham last campaign, attracted Spurs' interest as manager Ange Postecoglou seemingly green-lit the Israel international's signing.

It's also believed that Blackburn Rovers starlet Ashley Phillips is heading to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as chairman Daniel Levy agrees a £3 million fee for the promising 18-year-old.

However, the north Londoners won't be done with the aforementioned trio, as reliable reports suggest that they're still chasing the likes of Gallagher and a new star defender.

Even though Phillips is on his way to Spurs, the likes of Wolfsburg's Micky van de Ven and Juventus star Gleison Bremer remain linked with a move.

Gallagher, whose future at Chelsea is apparently up in the air, could end up making that switch across the English capital if all goes to plan – as The Guardian and journalist Jacob Steinberg reveal.

According to his information, as Steinberg also writes on Twitter, there's a "good chance" he leaves Stamford Bridge this summer and Tottenham are lurking.

It is claimed in his actual written piece that they have held talks over a move for the England international, but if they wish to sign him, Spurs face competition from bitter London rivals West Ham.

Chelsea are in the process of a major rebuild and Gallagher is one member of Mauricio Pochettino's squad who could end up departing.

How good is Conor Gallagher?

The 23-year-old made 35 league appearances for Chelsea last season under both Graham Potter and former interim boss Frank Lampard.

However, his starts were limited and around half of those minutes came from the bench, so Gallagher is hardly a key first eleven player at the Bridge.

That being said, his productive spell on loan at Crystal Palace over the 2021/2022 season is a real indicator of his quality, with Gallagher racking up eight top flight goals and three assists that year (WhoScored).

The midfielder also ranked as their best-performing player by average match rating, and pundit Jermaine Jenas believes he can be a "game-changer" on his day.

“I think he is a game-changer aswell Conor Gallagher," said Jenas to Match of The Day (via The Sun).

"He’s the type of player that you bring on and he has an impact on the game. He presses, gets himself in the box and creates chances.

"He presses, gets himself in the box and creates chances. Also, he’s won a World Cup. He was part of the U17 World Cup-winning side so he understands tournament football and I’m pleased for Conor.”

Indeed, Gallagher could well be a brilliant addition to Postecoglou's squad if they can get a deal done.

Patel, Wessels star as Durham flop again

Notts won by nine wickets with four overs to spare at Chester-le-Street against an inexperienced side who, after five games, remain on minus four points.Being obliged to start with that four-point deficit cannot have helped the morale of a side shorn of five players from the team which reached last year’s final. All out for 123 with 11 balls unused, there was no attempt to exert pressure as 18-year-old debutant Liam Trevaskis was asked to bowl the first over and Alex Hales hit the left-arm spinner for two fours. When Durham’s T20 skipper Paul Coughlin came on for the third over Hales twice drove him straight down the ground. With 15 coming off the over Hales set about finishing it as quickly as possible, only to be bowled for 44 when going down the pitch to Trevaskis in the seventh over. There were already 69 on the board and Riki Wessels was able to continue his good form by coasting to an unbeaten 49. Brendan Taylor finished the match with a six over long-on off Ryan Pringle to finish on 33 not out.Any chance of a contest looked remote from the moment Durham slipped to 8 for 2 after ten balls. They were briefly revived by Graham Clark with 41 off 27 balls, but from 54 for 2 Durham slipped to 65 for 6 with Samit Patel picking up three wickets. On the day he was awarded a full contract until the end of the 2019 season, Cameron Steel cut the first ball of the match, from Patel, for four. But after adding two singles he lifted left-arm seamer Luke Wood’s first ball to extra cover.Paul Collingwood was moved up to No. 3 but fell for nought, skying a pull off Wood to backward square leg. Clark cut, pulled and drove three fours in taking 15 off the first five balls of a Jake Ball over, only for Michael Richardson to bottom edge the sixth into his stumps.Patel was recalled and had Clark caught behind when aiming to leg. Jack Burnham’s fierce drive to extra cover was well held above his head by Dan Christian then Stuart Poynter played all round Patel’s next ball.Coughlin and Pringle could afford few risks but did well to add 39 before Pringle pulled Steven Mullaney straight to deep backward square. Smart work by Mullaney saw Coughlin run out and Barry McCarthy stumped by Tom Moores off Ish Sodi before last man Chris Rushworth lofted to mid-off.It was a tame end to a stuttering innings, leaving Nottinghamshire with a simple task to complete their third successive win.
