Curtis named in New Zealand squad for UAE tour, Priest unfit

New Zealand squad

Suzie Bates (capt), Sam Curtis, Sophie Devine, Maddy Green, Holly Huddleston, Leigh Kasperek, Amelia Kerr, Katey Martin (wk), Thamsyn Newton, Katie Perkins, Anna Peterson, Hannah Rowe, Amy Satterthwaite, Lea Tahuhu

Right-hand batsman Sam Curtis has been named in the 14-member New Zealand women squad that will take on Pakistan in three ODIs and four T20Is in Sharjah from October 31. Wicketkeeper Rachel Priest and legspinner Erin Bermingham have missed selection due to fitness. The rest of the squad remains unchanged from New Zealand’s World Cup campaign earlier this year.New Zealand’s coach, Haidee Tiffen, said Priest needed to improve her physical conditioning in order to perform consistently at the international level. Katey Martin will keep wicket in Priest’s absence.”We’ve been clear with Rachel about the areas we want to see her improve in. She’s taken the feedback on board and is committed to putting the work in. We believe Rachel still has a lot to offer,” Tiffen said. “[Martin] does the job for the Otago Sparks and has kept wicket for us in the past, but we’re keen to see her behind the stumps for a full tour across different formats.”The three ODIs fall under the ICC Women’s Championship to determine qualification for the 2021 World Cup, which is to be held in New Zealand. They will also mark the first time New Zealand face Pakistan away from home in a bilateral series.”Pakistan will present a unique challenge in their own conditions and it’s going to be a new and exciting experience for many in our squad,” Tiffen said.”This is the start of some important games as we look to prepare for next year’s ICC World T20 in the Caribbean. The ODI series also signals the start of the ICC Women’s Championship as we begin qualifying for the Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2021.”The three ODIs will be played on October 31, November 2 and November 5. The four T20Is are scheduled for November 8, 9, 12 and 14.

Man Utd Could Land Thiago Silva 2.0 In £13m-rated "Rock"

Manchester United could well have identified a leading option to replace Harry Maguire this summer, amid reports that the club have held talks regarding the signing of OGC Nice star, Jean-Clair Todibo.

What's the latest on Todibo to Man United?

With West Ham United having seemingly agreed a £30m deal to help rescue Maguire from his Old Trafford nightmare, transfer insider Fabrice Hawkins has also revealed that United have been in contact with both Todibo's representatives and the Ligue 1 outfit over a prospective move.

Writing on Twitter, Hawkins stated: "Manchester United targets Jean-Clair Todibo. Discussions with Nice and the defender's entourage. The Reds devils are waiting to sell Harry Maguire to take action. West Ham have accelerated on HM and hope to complete the transfer."

While the 6 foot 3 ace is valued at around €15m (£13m) by CIES Football Observatory, prior reports have indicated that the Frenchman could command a fee of closer to €30m (£26m), with four years left to run on his existing deal.

Should Man United sign Todibo?

With Maguire – who was only recently stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag – set to be on his way to the London Stadium, the Red Devils will have a real pressing need to bolster their centre-back ranks before the end of the window, particularly with Raphael Varane having proven somewhat unreliable due to his persistent injury woes.

In the form of Todibo, Ten Hag could find himself a relatively youthful and "underrated" talent – in the words of Jacek Kulig – who can represent a long-term option at the Theatre of Dreams, with the one-time Barcelona man having been as "solid as a rock" in his homeland of late, as per Kulig.

Thiago Silva Chelsea

The former France U20 international will likely be looking to emulate the impact that Thiago Silva has enjoyed in the Premier League since trading Paris Saint-Germain for Chelsea back in the summer of 2020, with Todibo himself having previously spoken of his admiration for the veteran Brazilian:

"I've been inspired a lot by Andrea Pirlo in central midfield, and also by Thiago Silva in defence."

As per the Bundesliga's official website, one of the former Schalke man's key strengths is the fact that he is 'superb on the ball', as he notably ranks in the top 5% for successful take-ons per 90 among his European peers and in the top 15% for progressive passes per 90.

That composure in possession is also seen by the fact that one-time Toulouse titan also ranks in the top 20% for pass completion and the top 13% for passes attempted, ensuring he is going someway to matching Silva's impact for the Blues, as the 38-year-old ranks in the top 8% and the top 7% for those same two metrics, respectively.

Despite his advancing years, the latter man – who won the Champions League with the west Londoners back in 2021 – remains a truly exceptional presence at the heart of the defence, with his average match rating of 7.26 during the 2022/23 campaign, as per Sofascore, ranking him second behind only Bruno Fernandes in relation to the United squad.

The likeness between Silva and Todibo can also be seen by their defensive prowess and knack for sniffing out the danger, with the younger man having averaged 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game in Ligue 1 last season, while his experienced counterpart averaged 2.8 in that regard in England's top flight.

With Silva a simply "incredible centre-back" – according to ex-Chelsea boss Frank Lampard – the hope will be that Todibo can reach similar heights if he is to follow in his idol's footsteps and trade France for England this summer.

Newcastle Boosted By Update On 23-Year-Old Target

Newcastle United transfer target Oumar Solet is keen on a move to the Premier League this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

How much does Oumar Solet earn?

The £5,800-a-week-earning RB Salzburg defender has matured into an impressive player for his current club, producing strong performances in the back-line. In total, he has made 80 appearances, also winning numerous caps at youth team level for France, including two caps for the Under-20s.

Solet is currently contracted to Salzburg until the summer of 2025, and while there is no rush to sell him, his value could potentially start to diminish the more his deal edges towards its expiry date. For that reason, a summer move away looks far from out of the question, as Newcastle have been linked with a move for the 23-year-old.

The Magpies appear to be looking for a new centre-back partner for Sven Botman – one who can come in as a younger upgrade on Fabian Schar, who remains a good squad player – and a new update has now emerged regarding a potential move to St James' Park.

FC Salzburg's Oumar Solet poses with the trophy after winning the Austrian Soccer Cup

Could Newcastle sign Oumar Solet?

Speaking on NUFC Matters, via NUFC Blog, Jacobs gave his thoughts on the current situation surrounding Solet, revealing that the Salzburg man dreams of playing in the Premier League:

"I would keep an eye on a player at Salzburg called Oumar Solet. He is on Newcastle’s radar and he would like to play in the Premier League. He’s in his early 20s, he’s very physical, 6 ft 4, that’s a name Newcastle have on their radar."

Solet is someone who could be an ideal signing for Newcastle this summer, fitting exactly the right profile for the type of player they are looking to bring in.

At 23, he has years ahead of him top further learn his trade, hitting his peak years further down the line, and his giant stature makes him a dominant force in the air alongside Botman. Last season, he averaged an incredible 5.5 clearances per game in the Europa League across two appearances, as well as two interceptions per match, so he is truly an out and out defender.

It is also worth stressing however that Solet averaged a 94.4% pass completion in that competition, and 86.4% in four Champions League matches before Salzburg's elimination midway through the season, so he is clearly more than adept with the ball at his feet, which is sure to appeal to Eddie Howe.

Newcastle signing a new centre-back has to be at the top of their priorities this summer, with Schar undoubtedly a good servant, but now an ageing player who can be improved upon. For the Magpies to go up another gear in 2023/24, an element of ruthlessness is needed from Howe, in terms of turning some starters last season into squad players, with the Swiss star, Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn all arguably falling into that bracket.

They can all continue to get lots of minutes under their belt, as Newcastle battle across four different competitions, with squad depth a massive part of the Magpies potential success in the coming months, allowing players to stay fresh through rotation ahead of a busy schedule.

Surrey deny Lancashire a point in race for second

Saqib Mahmood took a career-best 4 for 50 as Lancashire had the better of the opening day at Old Trafford with the runner’s up spot at stake

Saqib Mahmood took a career-best 4 for 50 as Lancashire had the better of the opening day of their Specsavers County Championship clash with Surrey at Old Trafford. With Surrey beginning three points ahead of third-placed Lancashire, it’s a match where the winners will finish second in Division One.Surrey lost eight wickets before choosing to declare having reached 201 for 8 – their first batting point thanks to a half-century from Sam Curran – which denied Lancashire a third bowling point.”My first first-class game at Old Trafford and it’s one I won’t forget in a hurry,” Mahmood said “From a bowling point of view we couldn’t really have done much more. To get them to 200, the wicket looks like it’s flattening out now.”I was so annoyed they declared, I’m on four wickets and every ball I felt I was going to get a wicket and they go and declare so I wasn’t very happy if I’m honest!”On the declaration, Surrey coach Michael Di Venuto said: “We wanted to have a crack at them tonight and knock a couple over but it wasn’t to be. The rewards didn’t come for us but tomorrow is another day.”Our tail hasn’t been the best this year so to save wasting time and to get those nine overs to try to get a couple of wickets was the intention. Get the game moving, that’s the intent. It was the last thing they were expecting.”The visitors decided not to exercise their right to opt to bowl and the toss was won by Lancashire, who did choose to do so, therefore giving both captains the outcome they wanted. There were a couple of early chances for the hosts as Tom Bailey forced Rory Burns into drives that Dane Vilas and Rob Jones got hands to high above their heads but couldn’t hold.Burns and Mark Stoneman, the Championship’s third and second highest runs-scorers respectively, shared 47 for the first wicket before Burns chipped Mahmood to Shivnarine Chanderpaul at mid-on to depart for 18.Lancashire struck again before lunch, legspinner Matt Parkinson producing a superb delivery that spun back at Stoneman who left alone the ball that crashed into his stumps. That brought Kumar Sangakkara to the crease in his last first-class game and he was welcomed with a guard of honour by Lancashire’s players before guiding Surrey to lunch at 72 for 2.But it was a frenetic innings from the Sri Lankan great, who has made eight Championship centuries this season. Having launched Stephen Parry for six before lunch, he fell for the short-ball trap – hooking a bouncer from Mahmood to Rob Jones in the deep for 14.”We had a plan on how to bowl to Kumar Sangakkara at lunch and to come out and nail the plan, I couldn’t quite believe it had come off,” Mahmood said. “It is a great scalp.”Lancashire struck twice more before an early tea was called. Mahmood, playing in just his fourth first-class game, nipped one back at Scott Borthwick to trap the left-hander lbw for 30.Stephen Parry then picked up Surrey’s fifth wicket by ripping one past the outside edge of Ben Foakes’ bat with what turned out to be the final ball before tea – which was called early due to a combination of bad light and drizzle. Surrey were 112 for 5 at the interval and Lancashire were in the ascendancy. But a half-century stand after the resumption between Ollie Pope and Sam Curran held up the Lancashire charge. They could add just four more however as Pope overdid the attacking side of the stand, attempting to launch Parkinson down the ground but the ball turned past his outside edge and Alex Davies completed the stumping.Mahmood sealed his career-best figures by trapping Rikki Clarke for 7 with one that kept a little low before Gareth Batty came and went without scoring.Curran though carried on with his extremely impressive innings, passing his half-century from 106 balls. He went on to reach an unbeaten 56, taking Surrey past 200 and to their first batting point. At that stage they promptly declared.Alex Davies and Rob Jones negotiated a tricky period to close on 17 without loss.

Pochettino Could Give Swap Deal "Green Light"

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is the one who "has to give the green light" to the proposed swap deal of Romelu Lukaku and Dusan Vlahovic, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

Is Dusan Vlahovic joining Chelsea this summer?

It has been a strange summer of transfer activity for the Blues this year. Despite still being one of the busiest clubs in Europe – as they always are – the vast majority of their business has been focused on selling the considerable array of stars they have accumulated over the previous windows.

So far, the club have managed to ship off several of the stars that helped them win the Champions League two years ago, with the likes of N'Golo Kante, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly leaving for the unimaginably wealthy Saudi Pro League.

Whereas Mason Mount, Kai Havertz, and Mateo Kovacic have opted to stay in the country but join Chelsea's Premier League rivals.

While it's been an impressive effort from the West Londoners to sell so many players so quickly, there is one man that has proven to be a little more challenging to be rid of, Lukaku.

The Belgian's time as a Blues player has been nothing short of a disaster, as after a poor first season in the capital in which he was able to get the fanbase to turn on him – mostly thanks to that interview -, he spent the following year back in Italy, where he had a middling year for Inter Milan.

Romelu Lukaku Chelsea

It was expected that he would make his move to the Nerazzurri permanent this summer, and it looked like it was going to happen until the Champions League runners-up found out he had been speaking to Juventus – their staunchest rival – and so they called off any negotiations and washed their hands with him.

This turn of events has left the Old Lady as the only viable destination for the former Inter man that would keep him in European football, and to try and sweeten the deal for Pochettino's side, they have offered a swap deal that would see Serbian forward Vlahovic go the other way – so long as Chelsea chipped in another €40m (£34m) to boot.

After offering this possibility to the West Londoners last month, the Turin side have offered it again, and with Lukaku happy to make the move, the decision has been left in the hands of new boss Pochettino, per transfers expert Fabrizio Romano.

He explained the situation on his YouTube channel, saying:

"For Dusan Vlahovic, Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea manager, is thinking about that. He will take some days, it will be the weekend probably, to discuss internally, of course, with the board, but basically, for Chelsea, the decision is wait for something else for Romelu Lukaku or to go next week into negotiations with Juventus and reach an agreement for the swap deal: Lukaku, Vlahovic.

"So it has to be a strategy, but it is also important to understand what Pochettino wants to do with Dusan Vlahovic because more than one month ago, Chelsea said no to the swap deal between Lukaku and Vlahovic. Now Juventus are offering that again, they want €40m (£34m) as part of the deal.

"So it's Pochettino who has to give a green light to this move, and then we have to see if the two clubs can reach an agreement. Meanwhile, Lukaku already said yes to Juventus."

How good was Dusan Vlahovic last season?

Blues fans might not want to read this, but it wasn't a particularly good season for the Serbian international last year, nor has he found form since his move to the Bianconeri last January.

In his 27 Serie A appearances, he scored just ten goals, provided only two assists and could maintain a passing accuracy of just 72.1% – placing him 27th in the squad for his passing – per WhoScored.

His underlying numbers are also abysmal for a player that is expected to be amongst the best strikers in Italy and suggests that in a tougher league such as the Premier League, he could struggle yet further.

Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic.

According to FBref, which compares players in a similar position across Europe's top five leagues, the Belgrade-born forward only sits in the top 28% for non-penalty expected goals, the top 39% for pass completion, the top 44% for assists, and the top 47% for non-penalty goals, all per 90.

It gets worse still, as he also sits in the bottom 34% for aerial duals won, the bottom 31% for progressive carries, the bottom 30% for shot-creating actions, and the bottom 28% for successful take-ons, also all per 90.

Ultimately, Chelsea find themselves between a rock and a hard place as they must move on Lukaku, but doing it through a swap for Vlahovic whilst paying €40m (£34m) seems like just another mistake.

Roberto Firmino Nets 3 In Impressive Saudi Pro League Debut

Ex-Liverpool star Roberto Firmino stole the show on his competitive debut for Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ahli, while two other former Premier League players also impressed in the same game but Edouard Mendy made a huge mistake.

What did Roberto Firmino do on his Saudi debut?

This summer has seen an influx of top European footballers head to Saudi Arabia and it will be interesting to see how they get on individually as well as how the league develops.

Al Ahli have recruited a number of big names over the past few months, picking up Firmino on a free from Liverpool after his contract expired, while also landing Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City for a reported £30m and Allan Saint-Maximin from Newcastle United for a reported £23m.

The trio all started Al Ahli’s opening Pro League fixture, as they began their 2023/24 campaign against Al-Hazm as did Mendy who arrived from Chelsea for around £16m.

It didn’t take long for the former Premier League outfield players to impress either, as some good build-up play involving Saint-Maximin and Mahrez led to Firmino heading in the opening strike of the game, his first competitive goal for the club, after just six minutes.

You can see that effort below.

The second goal really was a thing of beauty and a true piece of collaboration from the trio as Saint-Maximin picked the ball up inside his own half and charged upfield before finding Mahrez in space.

The former Man City man carried the ball along the flank before drilling in an inch-perfect cross with his right foot as Firmino arrived with immaculate timing to tap in his second.

As noted by well-known Crystal Palace podcaster HLTCO, the sound made by the Al-Ahli fans as the ball went in really was something to behold.

Indeed, he wrote on Twitter: “The noise that accompanies this Roberto Firmino goal for Al-Ahly is insane.”

And that wasn’t all the Brazilian ace had for his new set of supporters as he completed his hat-trick in the second half as he bundled the ball over the line after initially having an effort saved from close range.

Seeing as he was wearing the captain’s armband, this was a pretty impressive way to start his career in the Saudi Pro League and Firmino’s goals were ultimately enough to seal a 3-1 win on the day.

However, the goal they did concede came from an absolute howler from former Chelsea goalkeeper Mendy.

The shot-stopper received the ball from a back pass under little pressure but played it directly to opposition player Vinícius Goes Barbosa de Souza, known as Vinícius, who simply lobbed the embarrassed 31-year-old.

What players have joined the Saudi Pro League?

Beyond the aforementioned trio, a whole host of other stars have followed Cristiano Ronaldo to the Middle East this summer.

Perhaps most notably, former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has joined Al-Ittihad, where he will play with N’Golo Kante formerly of Chelsea.

Other big names could also head to the Saudi Pro League before the window closes, with Franck Kessie of Barcelona linked with Al-Ahli, and even PSG’s biggest star Kylian Mbappe also touted as a target for Al-Hilal.

Liverpool Could Make Three More Signings This Summer

Liverpool could still potentially make three more signings in the summer transfer window, according to an encouraging update from Sky Sports reporter Melissa Reddy.

Who have Liverpool signed?

The Reds endured a painful 2022/23 season, finishing fifth in the Premier League and looking a million miles away from the team that almost won the quadruple the previous year.

It was clear that major summer surgery was required within the squad, particularly in midfield, and they have already undergone dramatic change. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai are Liverpool's two signings so far, coming in from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively, but Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have all moved on to pastures new.

Read the latest Liverpool transfer news HERE…

With the start of the new Premier League campaign edging closer all the time, more additions are required in the coming weeks, in order to have the depth required to challenge across four competitions. More midfielders are imperative, with Romeo Lavia and Andre looking like the current primary targets, while a left-sided centre-back would also be a shrewd addition.

Fluminense midfielder Andre.

Are Liverpool making more signings?

Writing on Twitter, Reddy explained that there is a chance that Liverpool could still sign two midfielders this summer, as well as bring in a new central defender to battle for playing time with the current options:

"Was part of my reporting yesterday that in an ideal situation, it would be a controller and a progressive destroyer (plus a defender). Might be a case of holding on one of the profiles if there's confidence better can be found. But they're currently working on multiple solutions."

Liverpool fans will certainly be buoyed by this update, with the Reds' transfer dealings going quieter of late, aside from players such as Fabinho and Henderson leaving. It will simply be unacceptable if FSG don't provide the funds to bring in at least one more midfielder and a centre-back, although a second signing in the middle of the park feels fairly crucial, in order for Jurgen Klopp have a plethora of options. There is a complete lack of a No.6 at the club currently, with Curtis Jones taking up that role in a few pre-season friendlies, so a couple of additions who are experts in front of the defence, as is the case with Lavia and Andre, makes complete sense. After such a disappointing summer transfer window last time around, it is vital that Liverpool nail their business this time, in order to prevent a repeat of last season's woes and to go into the campaign as genuine Premier League title challengers. If Lavia and Andre both came in, and someone like Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio, for example, it would complete a hugely productive time of things in the transfer market, but fans will be concerned that the Reds could again not quite have the squad they desire once the end of August arrives and the window shuts. The next couple of weeks are going to be crucial, with a fast start to the season required, rather than limping out of the blocks like they did last season.
