Rashid Khan gives Sunrisers another crack at CSK and IPL title

Rashid Khan single-handedly ended Sunrisers Hyderabad’s four-match losing streak to beat Kolkata Knight Riders in the virtual semi-final of the IPL

Thirty-four runs off 10 balls when his team was struggling to post a competitive total. Three wickets, including of the highest scorer and the biggest hitter in the opposition. One run-out of a batsman proving to be a great tactical move. Two catches. Rashid Khan single-handedly ended Sunrisers Hyderabad’s four-match losing streak to beat Kolkata Knight Riders and set up fourth bout against Chennai Super Kings this season, this time for the IPL title.Sunrisers were 134 for 6 in 17.5 overs when Rashid came out to bat. He produced an innings to rattle the young Knight Riders bowlers much like their captain Dinesh Karthik had recently done to the Bangladesh bowlers in the Nidahas Trophy final. Then Rashid came on to bowl with Knight Riders cruising at 67 for 1 in six overs, but took out Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, and crucially, Andre Russell in the last over that he bowled. There was a run-out in between to dismiss Nitish Rana, whose promotion had upset Sunrisers’ plans.Kuldeep Yadav lands lethal blowsBecause they don’t have David Warner, because their middle order has been out of form, Sunrisers Hyderabad have been conservative with the bat. Against a side whose batting looks like the future of T20, they got off to a cautious 45 for 0 Powerplay score, the lowest in Kolkata this season. In the eighth over, Kuldeep Yadav took out Shikhar Dhawan and Kane Williamson, two men who had accounted for nearly half their runs in the season so far. Dhawan missed the length on a sweep, and Williamson added himself to the highlight reel of great batsmen who have fallen to wrong’uns this season: AB de Villiers, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.Muddle in the middleAt 60 for 2 in 7.5 overs, Sunrisers needed someone in the reimagined middle order to play out of his skin but that didn’t happen. The Knight Riders spinners choked the life out of them, and the low run rate kept bringing wickets. When Carlos Brathwaite ran himself out in the 18th over to become the sixth wicket to fall, Sunrisers were looking at nothing short of another bowling miracle if they had to make it to Mumbai.Rashid RichardsPossibly, Knight Riders dropped the guard with Brathwaite’s wicket. There was some luck involved. And there was some sensational hitting. Young Prasidh Krishna, who had bowled a good 18th over until then, suddenly ditched the yorker and bowled a wide length ball with third man up. The edge flew over him. In the next over, with Yusuf Pathan gone too, Piyush Chawla left his station at the cover boundary and charged in, only to be lobbed by a Rashid mis-hit. Had he stayed on the boundary, he would have been offered a sitter. And then Rashid just went berserk. The best of his four sixes and two fours brought back memories of Viv Richards shuffling across and flicking the last ball of the 1979 World Cup final innings for a six. This was the fourth ball of the last over. He added one more six of the last ball of this innings.Perfect start to chaseA bit of a tactical tinkering, and Knight Riders were off to a perfect start. Sunil Narine did his thing with 26 off 13, by the virtue of being a left-hand batsman, Nitish Rana was promoted to delay the introduction of Rashid and Shakib Al Hasan, who in turn would have troubled Lynn whose strike rate against quicks is twice that against spin. As a result, Lynn had to face only two balls of spin in the first eight overs, by when he reached 36 off 21, taking Knight Riders to 81 for 1.The slipAnd then Rana slipped when turning for a second. Not only did he slip, he found himself taking on Rashid’s arm when he got up. The throw was flat, quick, and by the stumps. This brought Robin Uthappa in, and Williamson immediately went to Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a third over inside the first 10. Before this match, in this season, Bhuvneshwar had bowled 11 balls to Uthappa for four runs and one wicket. Unlike against CSK in the first qualifier, Williamson was not holding back here. Five balls and one run in this over put Uthappa under pressure, who as a result tried a reverse sweep on the first ball of the next over and was bowled by Rashid.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The endgame before the endgameThe two balls of spin that Lynn had faced in the first eight overs had been sweeps. The next three he faced from Rashid were sweeps again. On one of them, his glove saved him from the lbw. On one, he hit an uppish boundary. Rashid, though, could sense he was getting closer to the prey. In Test cricket you can torture this prey at leisure and get him. In T20 you don’t have time. One shot, and he can get away. Rashid didn’t let him. With the sixth, he adjusted the line a little, went for lbw on the off stump rather than middle, and beat the bat. Only Russell remained now.Williamson persisted with Rashid, deciding to bowl him in the 15th over, with 58 required off six overs. Russell knew what was happening. He started to block Rashid. A slip came in. Another block. Then Williamson made Russell wait. A helmet and a box came on to the field. The short leg fielder took his time to put it on. The faithful local crowd got twitchy. Rashid knew he had three balls to get Russell in. He bounded in, bowled a wrong’un, not particularly great as it was short, Russell went back to cut, got an edge, and Dhawan took an amazing catch as the ball swirled away from him at slip. It wasn’t a great ball, but Kumar Sangakkara said on air this is what happens when you are not sure which way the ball is turning and you make the decision a split second late. The endgameIn the qualifier, Williamson had made a mistake by bowling Brathwaite in the 18th over, thus not even utilising all of Bhuvneshwar’s over. This time, no such thing happened. Siddarth Kaul and Bhuvneshwar bowled excellent overs No. 17, 18 and 19 to shut the chase out. And defending 18 in the last over at the same venue where he chased 19 in the last over of the World T20 final two years ago, Brathwaite managed two wickets with two length balls to finish things off. It was fitting both those catches went to Rashid.

Talks held: Rangers make move for attacking manager with wins over Rodgers

Rangers have now held what is believed to be positive talks with one managerial candidate to take over at Ibrox, according to one report.

Who could be the next Rangers manager?

The Gers are on the search for their third permanent manager in the space of two years after parting ways with Michael Beale over the weekend. A 3-1 home defeat to Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership proved to be Beale’s last game in charge in Glasgow, with the 43-year-old ending his time as manager with 31 wins, four draws and eight defeats from 43 games.

Multiple managers, both in and out of work, have already been linked with the vacant role, including Frank Lampard, Kevin Muscat, Chris Wilder, Graham Potter and Ryan Lowe just some of the names to have been mentioned in recent days. The club look set to take their time when it comes to finding a long-term successor to Beale, with Steven Davis in interim charge of the side.

However, it looks as if Ibrox officials have already made a start when it comes to talks with a possible replacement. According to TEAMtalk, Rangers and Lampard have now held positive talks over a possible deal, with the former Chelsea boss extremely keen on taking charge. The report adds that further discussions are expected to take place between the two parties.

Frank Lampard

Is Frank Lampard a good manager?

Lampard likes to play an attacking 4-3-3 system, as per Transfermarkt, but so far, has had his struggles as a manager. During his time as Derby, Chelsea and Everton boss, the Englishman hasn’t won any honours and has won 83 of a possible 196 games, losing 73 of those. The 45-year-old does have two victories over Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers on his CV, though, something which could come in handy if he takes over at Ibrox as the club already look to close a seven-point gap on their rivals at the top of the table.

However, talkSPORT host Simon Jordan has been left concerned at the possibility of Lampard coming in at Rangers, believing it ‘makes no sense’.

“I’m not sure that Frank Lampard would be the right fit. I’m trying to work out on what basis would I be looking at Frank Lampard as a fit for Rangers.”

Jordan then went on to add:

“The only reason you put Lampard in the conversation is because it’s Frank Lampard the player. You don’t put him in the conversation because it’s Frank Lampard the manager, that’s why it makes no sense to me. Lampard is just a figure of people’s imagination right now, he needs to go away and regroup and become a football manager.”

The recent report states that Ibrox supporters have also made it clear that Lampard is not their preferred candidate, but by the looks of things, it appears that there is a real possibility of that happening following initial talks, making this one to keep an eye on in the coming days.

Everton make breakthrough for off-pitch personnel addition

To say that Everton's recruitment in recent years has been poor would be an understatement, having welcomed the likes of Cenk Tosun and Moise Kean, who both failed to add any attacking spark at Goodison Park. It remains to be seen whether their additions in the summer transfer window avoid flop status, too, with Beto, Jack Harrison, and Arnaut Danjuma particularly under pressure but looking positive so far.

Sean Dyche's side have turned a corner recently, putting an end to a winless run of five games in the Premier League by defeating Brentford before knocking Aston Villa out of the Carabao Cup. With a crucial relegation six-pointer against Luton Town up next, too, Everton will hope to make it three consecutive wins, and two in a row in the Premier League.

As they improve on the pitch, those in charge at Goodison Park are also set for improvements off the pitch after reportedly agreeing a deal which should only help them when the January transfer window opens.

What's the latest Everton news?

The investment of 777 Partners should at least ease Everton's financial worries if all goes well, hopefully ensuring funding for their new stadium, and now their attention could turn towards January reinforcements, which could make or break their season.

Getting recruitment right is important for any side, but if a side battling relegation gets things wrong in January, then it is likely to end in at least one season in the Championship. And that's where the addition of Phil Boardman could boost Everton's survival chances.

According to Football Insider, the Toffees have reached an agreement with Portsmouth to sign their recruitment chief, with an eye on avoiding any further transfer flops when it comes to January reinforcements. Boardman will be boosted by the fact that he previously worked with Everton's director of football, Kevin Thelwell at Wolverhampton Wanderers, which should make the transition fairly seamless.

Who is Phil Boardman?

Arriving at Portsmouth in 2017, Boardman has helped the League One club welcome a number of signings, including in the summer just gone, which saw them welcome several players on free deals, avoiding a single transfer fee to highlight how smart Boardman can be. And, so far, those signings have worked out, with his club sitting top of the league.

Everton will hope that the chief of recruitment can bring his quality in abundance to Goodison Park, where he will be tasked with putting an end to what has been an endless stream of transfers to forget. If he does ensure that Everton's January recruitment turns their fortunes around, then Boardman may well go down as their smartest addition of the season.

He will have some task on his hands, that's for sure, but Dyche could certainly do with the reinforcements when the winter transfer window opens. Backed by the investment of 777 Partners, too, those at Goodison Park may have an adequate transfer budget to play with.

For now, whilst improvements are made off the pitch, Dyche's focus will be on mounting a consistent run of form at Everton, and guiding them further and further away from relegation trouble.

Morgan century leaves him in good heart for Australia

ScorecardPaul Stirling and Eoin Morgan hit centuries as Middlesex ended their Royal London One-Day Cup South Group campaign with a 33-run victory over Gloucestershire at Bristol.Middlesex posted 322 for 3 after losing the toss, under clear blue skies, with Stirling batting through the innings for 127 not out, Morgan contributing exactly 100 as he tuned up for England’s one-day series against Australia and Hilton Cartwright hitting a rapid 60 off 41 balls. In reply, the hosts scored 289 all out, Ian Cockbain top-scoring with 106 not out and former Middlesex player Ryan Higgins making 65.James Franklin claimed 3 for 42 against his old county, but results elsewhere meant it was too little too late for his side to reach the knockout stage.Decent opening spells from Higgins and David Payne saw Middlesex struggle to 48 for 2 in the 13th over, Dawid Malan falling to a brilliant diving catch by wicketkeeper Gareth Roderick off Higgins and Nick Gubbins playing-on to Chris Liddle.Payne, making his first appearance of the season following ankle surgery, hobbled off after bowling six overs. Stirling was ready to settle in for the long haul as Morgan went on the attack, reaching a 39-ball fifty with a six over Graeme van Buuren over wide long-on.Left-arm spinner van Buuren suffered as Morgan hit three more maximums in a single over. Stirling cut loose with a big six into the flats at the Ashley Down Road End off Benny Howell as the pair added 158 in 23 overs.Morgan’s century occupied 69 balls. He was out shortly afterwards as van Buuren exacted some revenge by catching him off a skier to give Benny Howell a wicket.Stirling, dropped on 53 by Cockbain at point off Higgins, went to three figures off 128 balls and provided the base for a big total, while Cartwright smashed five sixes off the weakened Gloucestershire attack in what proved a decisive flourish. In reply, the home side raced to 42 off five overs before a clatter of wickets saw openers George Hankins and Chris Dent depart either side of Howell. Franklin claimed two of the wickets.Gareth Roderick was run out by Cartwright in a shambolic mix-up with Cockbain over a quick single and Gloucestershire were in disarray at 74 for 4.Cockbain counter-attacked with sixes off successive deliveries from Nathan Sowter and Jack Taylor hit a breezy 33 before being bowled by the leg-spinner, playing across the line.Higgins moved confidently to fifty off 59 balls and celebrated with a big six over mid-wicket off Tom Helm before miscuing an attempted big hit off the same bowler and skying a catch to Stirling at cover. He and Cockbain had added 116 in 19 overs. The latter went on to record Gloucestershire’s one and only century in the competition off 109 balls, but his efforts were in vain as the tail folded tamely.

Conor Gallagher 'doing more' for Chelsea than 'mistake' signings Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, says ex-Blues defender William Gallas

William Gallas believes that Conor Gallagher is "doing more" for Chelsea than "mistake" signings Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez.

Chelsea reportedly ready to sell GallagherGallas advises otherwiseInstead slams Fernandez & CaicedoGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The English midfielder has been one of the few bright spots for Mauricio Pochettino amid a disappointing and inconsistent campaign. However, it is alleged that Chelsea are considering selling him off in the summer and there has been "no significant progress" over an extension of his contract which is set to expire in 2025. Moreover, with Gallagher being an academy product, Chelsea would see his sale value as complete profit, helping them comply with profit and sustainability guidelines set by the Premier League.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Meanwhile, there is little doubt that after spending astronomical amounts to sign Caicedo and Fernandez, the Chelsea board want the duo to be the engines in midfield and regard them as future stars. However, both players have not been able to fulfill expectations with several lacklustre performances at the centre of the park.

WHAT GALLAS SAID

Gallas believes that Chelsea should back Gallagher and reward him for his contributions with a new contract.

Speaking to Gallas said: "Should Chelsea sell Conor Gallagher? When you spend £100m plus on players like Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo, they will have big expectations and you expect them to lead on the field. It hasn't happened, they're still young. Conor Gallagher is a Chelsea boy, he did not cost the club any money and the fans love him because of his commitment on the pitch.

"Gallagher runs a lot, you need players like him, if you compare him to Enzo and Caicedo, he is completely different. Gallagher is doing more for Chelsea than the other two, if he has to leave the club, the fans will be upset but they will understand why he has to leave, because of Financial Fair Play. It's hard to understand how Chelsea have put themselves in that position, the board has made a mistake in spending so much money that they now need to rely on selling homegrown players."

GALLAS ADVISES GALLAGHER TO STAY

Gallas wants Gallagher to fight for his place at Chelsea while urging the club to find alternative financial solutions to keep him.

"If I was Conor Gallagher, I would try to stay with Chelsea. In the end, it's the decision of the player," he added. "The club can't force him to leave if he doesn't want to. Chelsea will have to find another solution to solve the financial situation. If Gallagher wants to stay at Chelsea, he should not let himself leave."

Hodd rescue just fails after Whiteley's blast hurts Yorkshire

Andrew Hodd needed successive sixes off the last two balls to thwart Worcestershire: he could only manage one

ECB Reporters Network23-May-2018
ScorecardJoe Clarke, Travis Head, Ross Whiteley and Ben Cox hit half-centuries in Worcestershire’s imposing 350 for six before the Rapids held their nerve with the ball to beat Yorkshire in a thriller by four runs at Emerald Headingley and continue their winning start in the Royal London one-day Cup.Yorkshire wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd hit a six over long-on off the penultimate ball, from Charlie Morris, but needing a repeat from the final ball to rescue an unexpected victory aimed in the same direction and managed only a single.Clarke and Head, the latter who was Yorkshire’s overseas in 2016, laid the platform with 61 off 64 balls and 77 off 94. Whiteley, who hit six sixes in an over during last year’s T20 Blast fixture here, and wicketkeeper Cox then put the Vikings under late pressure with 66 not out off 41 balls and 50 off 33.They brilliantly scored the lion’s share of 122 off the last 10 overs before Yorkshire started their chase strongly through ex-Pear Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Indian centurion Cheteshwar Pujara, who made 101 off 94 balls. They took the score to 173 for one in the 30th over before sliding following the departure of opener Kohler-Cadmore for 89.From there, Yorkshire battled hard and even took the target to six off the last ball with one wicket in hand (Andrew Hodd on strike) having been 253 for five after 42 overs. But they finished on 346 for nine.Yorkshire conceded their second highest total in List A cricket, while Adil Rashid’s two for 86 from 10 overs was his most expensive career return. The Rapids, last season’s semi-finalists, backed up Saturday’s home win over Derbyshire. Yorkshire, meanwhile, have now won one and lost two. After being inserted under overcast skies, the visitors had to navigate some early assistance for the seamers, with Daryl Mitchell trapped lbw by Ben Coad – 14 for one.Clarke and Australian Head then shared 108 in 17 overs for the second wicket before the innings slowed up somewhat as they fell to 220 for five in the 39th, losing Clarke run out backing up and Head superbly caught and bowled by Rashid. But Whiteley strengthened an excellent recent limited overs record against Yorkshire with some blistering hitting, while Cox was equally dynamic. The runs then continued to flow at the start of the Yorkshire reply.Openers Kohler-Cadmore and Adam Lyth shared 72 inside 12 overs before Pujara joined the former to share 101 in 18 overs for the second wicket. While Kohler-Cadmore added to last Friday’s 164 in beating Durham, Pujara passed 50 for the third successive innings. But the chase faltered in the 30th over when leg-spinning all-rounder Brett D’Oliveira returned and had Kohler-Cadmore caught at long-on and pinch-hitter James Wainman caught behind in three balls.Yorkshire quickly slipped from 173 for one and reached 40 overs at 240 for four.Pujara reached his hundred shortly afterwards, but it was all but game up when he found deep mid-wicket off Ed Barnard’s seamers. Some exhilarating lower order hitting raised home hopes again, but it was to no avail as 16 off the last, and then six off the last ball, with one wicket left was a step too far.

Sheff Wed: Chansiri now looking at move for "superb" 3-4-1-2 manager

Sheffield Wednesday are searching for a replacement for Xisco Munoz as manager, and a new name has been thrown into the hat, courtesy of journalist Ricky Charlesworth.

Latest Sheff Wed manager news; Jones, Warnock

The Owls have made a disastrous start to the season in the Championship, having earned promotion from League One in such thrilling fashion last time around.

On Tuesday night, Wednesday were beaten 1-0 away to West Brom, and while it was far from an embarrassing result, it was still another defeat that left them further adrift at the bottom of the table. They have picked up just two points from their opening 10 league matches in 2023/24 to date, also scoring only five times.

That loss at the Hawthorns proved to be the final straw with Xisco, with those high up at Hillsborough, including owner Dejphon Chansiri, relieving him of his duties on Wednesday evening, despite only replacing Darren Moore as manager during the summer.

The search is now on to find a perfect replacement for the Spaniard, and a number of names have already emerged as potential options, including Nathan Jones and Neil Warnock. Now, a new face appears to have entered the picture, following a fresh Sheffield Wednesday manager update.

Football Soccer – Red Bull Salzburg v OGC Nice – UEFA Europa League group stage – Red Bull Arena, Salzburg, Austria – 20/10/2016. Red Bull Salzburg’s coach Oscar Garcia. REUTERS/Dominic Ebenbichler

New Sheff Wed manager target

Taking to X, Sheff Wed reporter for The Examiner Charlesworth claimed that Oscar Garcia is seen as a "prominent" option to come in and fill the void left by Xisco in the Hillsborough hot seat:

"Understand Oscar Garcia is a prominent name on Wednesday’s shortlist. Ex-Brighton and Watford boss. Managed all over Europe, last post was Reims in France."

It is encouraging to see the Owls looking at so many options already, with their next appointment such a crucial one, in terms of steering them away from the threat of relegation back to League One, which would be an almighty blow after only one year away.

In Garcia, Wednesday would be bringing in a manager with plenty of experience at a high level, having spent time in England before, as Charlesworth alludes to. He prefers a 3-4-1-2 formation, suggesting he is a modern coach with fresh ideas, using wing-backs effectively, which the likes of Liam Palmer and Marvin Johnson have been used to already under previous managers.

The 50-year-old is also a three-time league champion, which is nothing to be sniffed at, having won two Austrian Bundesliga titles with RB Salzburg in 2015/16 and 2016/17 – he won the Austrian Cup in both of those seasons, too – and one Israeli crown with Maccabi Tel Aviv back in 2012/13. He has also been hailed as "superb" by French media in recent times, following his spell at Reims.

There may be some Wednesday fans who are concerned that Garcia could be a little too similar to Xisco, in terms of background and style – the fact that he has also managed Watford plays into that narrative – but if the club see him as the best option, a move could be one to keep an eye on. In truth, things could have been so much simpler if Moore had stayed put beyond the summer, so yu could argue that owner Chansiri arguably has a lot to answer for, in that respect.

Report: Man United reach contract breakthrough with highly-rated prospect

Manchester United have hit a breakthrough in contract talks with a promising youngster at Old Trafford, according to recent reports.

What's the latest news involving Manchester United?

When questioned in his pre-match press conference on who could return from injury to face Burnley at Turf Moor on Saturday evening, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag provided a fresh update on his current list of casualties, stating: "Yeah, maybe as you say Harry Maguire. We will see better after training. But Varane will train, we will see. Amrabat, he will train, we will see. Mount, as well, but they all didn't play for short or longer term. Varane, obviously, was the shortest [time] out."

Coming off the back of three consecutive losses encompassing all competitions, the Red Devils will be aiming to rectify their poor recent form, which has also contributed further to the negativity surrounding the Premier League giants at the moment, both on and off the field of play.

Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho is still suspended from the club following his public rebuttal to Dutch coach Ten Hag in the aftermath of their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal before the international break, and The Daily Star report that the England international could be sold for a cut-price fee in January to the 'highest bidder' that comes in for him.

The Daily Mail even claimed earlier this month that Manchester United were eyeing up a shock move to bring in former Aston Villa winger Anwar El Ghazi to help provide cover due to their shortage of wingers. Nevertheless, any notion of the former Netherlands international moving to Old Trafford has now halted, with the 28-year-old electing to move to Bundesliga outfit Mainz on a free transfer.

Who is signing a new contract at Manchester United?

According to Football Insider, Manchester United striker Joe Hugill has reached an agreement over a new deal at Old Trafford and will sign on until the summer of 2026.

The report states that Hugill is well-regarded within the walls at the club and the 19-year-old featured for Manchester United on their pre-season tour of the United States. Putting pen to paper on a new contract would settle any uncertainty over his future at the club, with his current terms set to expire in 2024.

Joe Hugill

Standing at 6 foot 2 inches, Hugill has made a brilliant start to the new campaign, registering four goals and one assist in five appearances across all competitions for the Under-21s, as per Transfermarkt.

Sunderland had been linked with a move for the Durham-born forward earlier this year, according to The Sun. However, it now looks like he will commit his immediate future to Manchester United, potentially providing Erik Ten Hag with a wildcard option in the forward areas later in the campaign to help complement Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial.

Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston spoke to Chronicle Live earlier in 2023 and gave some insight into Hugill's style of play, stating: "He comes alive in the penalty area and his habit of being in the right place, at the right time, is an endearing trait for a centre-forward."

Clearly, Hugill is someone earmarked to have a future at Old Trafford. It will be interesting to see how Hugill's career trajectory pans out at Manchester United over the next couple of years.
