Rocks leave Stars defence hanging by a thread

A total of 129 was never going to be enough, and the Rocks chased it down comfortably through Vince and Pretorius

Tabraiz Shamsi’s match-winning qualifies came to the fore•MSL

Jozi Stars’ title defence hopes are hanging by a thread after losing a fifth successive match in the Mzansi Super League (MSL). Although mathematically it is still possible for them to make the playoffs, they will need more than just their own results to go their way. Despite shuffling their batting line-up, the Stars did not manage to score enough runs and their 129 for 3 was never going to be enough against a strong Paarl Rocks side. James Vince picked up from his undefeated 86 against the Spartans last Sunday, scoring 43 to ensure the Rocks successfully chased down their target inside 17 overs. They move to third on the table, four points behind leaders, the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. Will Chris Gayle play his 400th T20 in South Africa? In his 399th T20 game, Chris Gayle was dropped down the order to No.3 after a poor start, with 46 runs in five innings so far. At first, the move seemed successful. Ryan Rickelton and Reeza Hendricks opened the Stars’ innings with a strong stand of 64 in 9.4 overs before Rickelton was dismissed for 40. That brought Gayle to the crease with enough of a foundation to get going immediately. But Gayle only managed a single before he was struck on the pad by Hardus Viljoen and given out. Replays showed the ball had pitched outside leg but with no DRS, Gayle would not have even been able to review. He is now in danger of leaving the tournament without making much of an impression or completing a personal milestone. Gayle is available for one more match in this tournament when the Stars play the Tshwane Spartans on Sunday. If he plays, it will be his 400th, but the Stars have already hinted they made need to make significant changes to their side.Magic tricks Tabraiz Shamsi has packed his phone away for this season and is now showing off his skills as a magician in the making. Shamsi keeps a handkerchief in his pocket which turns into a wand, and when he takes a wicket, he brings it out in celebration. The contraption made its first appearance in this edition of the MSL when he had Hendricks caught at long-off. None of Shamsi’s team-mates went too close to him when the catch was taken, perhaps knowing he needed some space, and allowed the Paarl crowd to see their very own Harry Potter at work.KG on the comeback trail Kagiso Rabada has not looked his usual sprightly self since the tour of India, until his first ball at Boland Park. It wasn’t the first ball of the innings, as it might ordinarily have been. Rabada was used as first-change after Gayle was given the new ball, and he quickly showed what he is capable of. He fired in a full delivery outside off, and Henry Davids, who was caught on the back foot trying to cut, inside-edged onto leg-stump, which went cartwheeling away. Rabada returned in the 15th over, with the cause all but lost and managed to have something of a last say when he caught Mangaliso Mosehle off his own bowling. A lengthy check for a no-ball showed that Rabada was just on the line and Mosehle had to go. Rabada could have had a third off the next ball but Gayle dropped an Isuru Udana skier at point. Olivier’s over The match was tensely poised with the Paarl Rocks on 64 for 4 halfway through their chase, still needing 66 runs off the final 10 overs when Duanne Olivier released the pressure with an over that cost 15. Vince was the beneficiary of Olivier’s misdirected line down leg and the vacant third man area, where he sent three, successive boundaries. The required run-rate dipped under six an over after that, and dipped to four when Simon Harmer’s second over cost 17. There was no stopping the Rocks from there.

Rangers planning permanent move to sign player who Philippe Clement loves

Rangers are interested in completing the signing of an "infectious" player on a permanent deal this summer, with Philippe Clement an admirer of the individual in question.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers still lead the way in the Scottish Premiership, enjoying a two-point lead over Celtic, in what promises to be a nerve-wracking end to the season.

Rangers have been linked with conducting some important business in recent weeks, with a permanent switch for Abdallah Sima potentially on the cards in the summer. Brighton are willing to sanction a big-money move for the 22-year-old, with the Seagulls wanting between £10-15m for his services.

Rangers will agree record-breaking Sima signing on one condition

The move is likely to happen on one condition.

By

Mar 9, 2024

It means the Gers could even break their transfer record in the next transfer window, should they pay more than the £12m they spent on Tore Andre Flo back in 2000.

Elsewhere, Clement is believed to be eyeing a double move for Rapid Vienna pair Leopold Querfeld and Matthias Seidl, seeing the respective young defender and midfielder as possible summer targets who may bolster the depth and quality within the squad.

Coventry City attacking midfielder Callum O'Hare is also seen as an option for the Scottish giants, as he continues to catch the eye in the Championship, registering nine goal contributions (six goals and three assists) in the competition so far this season.

Rangers transfer update on permanent Fabio Silva deal

Now, according to Football Insider, Rangers are planning to sign Fabio Silva on a permanent basis this summer and could be given a financial boost to seal a deal, assuming they secure Champions League qualification in the coming months.

The report goes on to add that Clement is "eager to strengthen his squad this summer and Rangers are expected to experience a busy summer of transfer activity if they hold on to win the league title". The manager has "admitted that he would like to make the deal permanent" after being impressed by what he's seen so far.

Fabio Silva

Clement also praised Silva after the Europa League clash with Benfica, saying:

“He has his qualities and is taking more and more control of his emotions. We talked a lot about that, that it’s the next step for him to take.

“I am really happy about how he handled the game in Lisbon because it was a hostile situation with a lot of attention towards him. But he played for the team, to show everybody he’s a good player. He played to be good player for Rangers and that’s important to me.”

Signing Silva for good has to be looked at as a priority piece of summer business for Rangers, not only because of the ability he already possesses but also due to his long-term potential.

While it feels as though he has been around for a while, joining Wolves in 2020, he is still only 21 years of age, and Connor Goldson waxed lyrical over his teammate soon after his arrival at Ibrox in January, saying:

"I can't say too much because we haven't done certain exercises or played 11-vs-11 scoring goals but the way he works in training is infectious, his pressing is infectious."

Granted, Silva is more than likely going to cost Rangers a lot of money if they want to make him a high-profile permanent addition at the end of the season, but it could be worth the gamble, considering he has already made a positive impact, scoring twice in four Scottish Premiership starts.

Whether the Gers would be able to afford both Sima and Silva remains to be seen – Champions League qualification is essential if there is to be any chance of that happening – but the idea of both being at the club for years to come is exciting.

Tottenham eye move to sign "outstanding" £100m striker for Ange – report

Tottenham Hotspur are weighing up a move for a mega-money striker this summer as they look to push on under Ange Postecoglou next season.

Kane-shaped void still needs filling

The Lilywhites lost star striker Harry Kane over the summer, and plenty feared that they would suffer as a result, with the Englishman having racked up over 200 Premier League goals during his time in north London.

However, Spurs have thrived. Heung-Min Son has taken up greater responsibility in a central role, while Richarlison is also beginning to shine in a Tottenham shirt, and the pair have combined for 25 goals and 11 assists this season.

It is a far cry from Kane's 31 efforts in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich, but it is enough to leave Tottenham in with an excellent chance of winning back Champions League football next season. As things stand, the top five in the Premier League are expected to qualify, and there is an eight point gap between Spurs in 5th and 6th placed Manchester United.

The squad still need strengthening though, if Postecoglou is going to be able to deliver on his promise to make Spurs more than top four hopefuls next season.

"We want to finish the season strong and keep building on the foundation of being a team that hopefully in 12 months' time people are looking at us differently and talking about us differently," he told the media ahead of their clash with West Ham.

ByBen Goodwin Apr 1, 2024 Big money striker on the radar

As it stands, Spurs seem a man light in their front line, especially if Timo Werner returns to RB Leipzig this summer after his loan spell in north London ends. They have been linked with adding a more physical presence at the top of the pitch, and now reports claim that they are the latest side keeping tabs on Sweden striker Alexander Isak.

The Newcastle man scored twice and grabbed an assist in a win against West Ham on Saturday, and has looked like a very shrewd addition to the Premier League since his arrival in the summer of 2022.

Eddie Howe has already issued a hands off warning for his striker, telling the media that “he’s an outstanding talent and no one connected with Newcastle would want to lose him”. But amid financial fair play concerns on Tyneside, there is fear that they may lose one of their stars, while CEO Darren Eales earlier claimed that "if we're going to get to where we want to get to, at times it is necessary to trade your players".

Arsenal are keen on Isak, but The Sun report that "Tottenham are also keeping tabs" on the 24-year-old should a cut price deal become available, although any deal is still likely to cost in the region of £100m as things stand, which would be a record move for the Lilywhites.

Isak himself appears open to a move to north London one way or another, admitting over the international break that “if things show up, things can happen”. Could he be the man Tottenham need to move from top four challengers to Premier League contenders?

Pochettino’s 105-touch hero can run the show for Chelsea again

Chelsea will be looking to make it two Premier League wins in as many games when they host a struggling Burnley side at Stamford Bridge today.

Mauricio Pochettino's side beat Eddie Howe's Newcastle United 3-2 in their last league outing, with the Blues earning a first top-flight win in three games.

This afternoon is a great opportunity to extend the club's winning run, facing a side second from bottom in the table and staring relegation right in the face.

Pochettino's side are currently enduring an injury crisis, with the likes of Levi Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah and Roméo Lavia all missing ahead of the encounter – with the latter ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Despite the recent troubles, one Chelsea player must start the clash against Vincent Kompany's side given his magnificent display against the same opposition back in October.

Enzo Fernández's stats vs Burnley in October 2023

Pochettino's side claimed a 4-1 victory over the Clarets back in October 2023, with the likes of Raheem Sterling and Cole Palmer both on the scoresheet for the Blues.

However, another player who impressed at Turf Moor that day was midfielder Enzo Fernández, with the Argentinian producing an 8/10 display after having 'orchestrated the match from the middle of the pitch' – as GOAL's Jacob Schneider noted at the time

The 23-year-old played the whole 90 minutes of the victory, having 105 touches and completing 81 passes, at an accuracy rate of 94% – with the World Cup winner running the show in the Blues' midfield.

Chelsea's £107m man also won six of his nine ground duels, whilst making two interceptions and three tackles – as he dominated the midfield alongside fellow big-money signing Moises Caicedo.

The two have developed a brilliant partnership, starting at the base of the Blues' three-man midfield on at least 20 occasions this season, with the pair undoubtedly the future of the club.

Enzo Fernández's stats for Chelsea

After his arrival back in January 2023, Fernandez has gone on to make 57 appearances for the Blues, scoring seven times, including a brilliant strike in the FA Cup victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park.

He's rapidly become one of the best young talents in the division, with the Argentinian one of the club's star performers despite the disappointing campaign.

During the current campaign, he's featured 24 times in the league, playing for 1,878 minutes, with the 23-year-old one of Pochettino's most important talents.

Given his importance to this Chelsea side and his prior display against today's opponents, Fernandez needs to start to continue his run of starting each of the last seven Premier League outings – giving the Blues the best possible chance of extending their unbeaten run and winning back to back league games for the first time since the end of December.

The first half was much more neck-and-neck, but two quick-fire goals soon after the restart from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson gifted Spurs a real advantage and Villa a mountain to climb.

It was irrecoverable for Unai Emery's side, who soon afterwards lost captain John McGinn to a red card. The north Londoners then compiled more misery on Villa with two late goals in added time.

Stoppage strikes from Son Heung-min and January signing Timo Werner sealed the vital 4-0 victory and rounded off what was, arguably, Spurs' finest second half performance of the campaign.

A wonderful afternoon by all accounts, a slight dampener is the worries surrounding star defender Micky van de Ven, with reports today suggesting he is set for assessment after being taken off with hamstring trouble against Villa (Dan Kilpatrick).

One silver lining for Spurs, though, is van de Ven himself believing that it won't be anything too serious.

Micky van de Ven withdrawn due to injury

“I’m not sure, he doesn’t think it’s anything too significant,” said Postecoglou on van de Ven's injury against Villa. “So disappointing for him because he was outstanding again up until that point. Great for Radu [Dragusin] to come in, his first significant game-time in a big game and I thought he handled it really well.”

The Dutchman being sidelined with another hamstring injury, akin to what happened earlier in the season, would be an almighty blow for Tottenham but van de Ven's self assessment is at least a positive.

Van de ven has formed an exceptional partnership with Cristian Romero at the heart of Tottenham's defence this term, and it's undoubtedly been a crucial factor in their chase for a top four finish.

Coady praises "massive" van de Ven at Tottenham

Following Spurs' 4-0 win over Villa, Leicester defender Coady told BBC Radio 5 Live that van de Ven is "massive" for Spurs – heaping praise on the 22-year-old summer signing from Wolfsburg.

“It’s how you want to watch football," said Coady. “You want to watch football on the front foot, you want to watch people being aggressive and stepping in and not worrying about the space in behind but use his pace to get back in. He is a fantastic footballer, and like I said, for this Tottenham team and how they play, he is a massive part of that.”

Given his contribution, there is a very serious case to be made that van de Ven could be seen as one of the signings of the summer.

Man Utd eyeing perfect Mainoo partner who’s a "mix" of Scholes & De Bruyne

Another season at Manchester United has brought with it the emergence of yet another shining star from the academy ranks, with the club's youth production line still very much firing on all cylinders despite sustained woes both on and off the pitch at Old Trafford.

While last year gave rise to a certain Alejandro Garnacho – the Argentine now a mainstay having started 25 games in a row in all competitions – it is fellow teenager Kobbie Mainoo who is now establishing himself as the new poster boy for the Red Devils.

Ever since his full Premier League debut away to Everton back in November – a performance that saw him dubbed "unbelievable" by club legend Roy Keane – young Mainoo has caught the attention of fans and pundits alike, with even England boss Gareth Southgate hastily reversing his decision to not call up the 18-year-old, following last weekend's FA Cup thriller at home to Liverpool.

Now looking like the type of figure United should build the side around for the next decade or so, the question now remains as to who will be the Stockport native's long-term partner in the midfield ranks, with the search to find that solution having perhaps already begun…

Man Utd's midfield search

With various reports indicating that Casemiro could be on his way this summer, while fellow veteran Christian Eriksen has also voiced his frustration at his recent lack of game time, there could well be something of a shake-up in the squad ahead of next season.

According to journalist Ben Jacobs – writing for 90min – Erik ten Hag's side are already exploring the prospect of snapping up one eye-catching talent in the form of Leicester City star, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, with the 25-year-old playing a key role in the club's push for promotion.

As per the report, the Red Devils have already lodged an enquiry regarding the signing of the Englishman, with the Foxes potentially needing to sell if they are unable to secure an immediate return to the top flight.

Leicester midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall

That failure would seemingly lead the left-footed playmaker to be up for grabs for just £25m, with an alternative price tag of £40m set to be in place if the Midlands side do indeed go up at the first time of asking.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's season in numbers

There may be some concern at the prospect of turning to a player currently operating in the Championship, although the examples of Jarrod Bowen and Ivan Toney, among others, should indicate the type of talent that can be found in the second tier.

The £20k-per-week maestro certainly couldn't have done more to catch the eye either, scoring ten times and contributing a further 12 assists in the league this term, while only recently producing a sparkling display against Chelsea in Leicester's cruel 4-2 defeat in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

That outing showcased that Dewsbury-Hall is more than capable of mixing it in the big time, having provided an assist for Stephy Mavididi's second-half stunner, alongside registering two key passes and completing four of his six attempted dribbles.

A real driving force in his left-sided berth, the one-time Luton Town loanee could operate effectively in a number eight role with Mainoo slotting into a deeper position, albeit while still being able to muck in defensively having notably won seven duels against the Blues last time out.

Interestingly, as far as Ten Hag and co are concerned, the in-demand talent has somewhat cheekily referred to himself as a "mix between Paul Scholes and Kevin De Bruyne", having outlined his particular admiration for that man Scholes.

Although seemingly not close to those levels yet, the elegant operator does boast an impressive creative streak that either man would be proud of, as evidenced by his 18 'big chances' created this season, alongside an average of 2.6 key passes per game. Bruno Fernandes, for comparison, has created 13 'big chances' in the Premier League, with an average of 3.1 key passes per game.

As an "all action 8" – as described by data analyst Ben Mattinson – Dewsbury-Hall would have the legs to bomb up and down the pitch at will and not leave Mainoo isolated alongside him, with such a combination likely to thrive under Ten Hag, or the Dutchman's potential successor.

Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp would find the England job 'boring', warns former Three Lions star as he explains why Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard could be a better fit

Southgate resigns as England bossGerrard and Lampard backed for roleKlopp and Guardiola would find it 'boring'WHAT HAPPENED?

Following England's Euros final defeat to Spain, manager Gareth Southgate resigned from his role after nearly eight years in the post. While the Football Association looks for his successor, ex-England man Glen Johnson has backed Gerrard and Lampard to be embraced by fans if they take up the job – despite their underwhelming managerial records. Former Liverpool boss Klopp and Manchester City manager Guardiola have been named as frontrunners for the job, but Johnson feels neither man will want to swap club football for reduced action on the international stage.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT GLEN JOHNSON SAID

The former Liverpool defender told : “I can’t really see either of them [Guardiola and Klopp] being England manager. Both of them wear their hearts on their sleeves, they’re super passionate and ultimately, I believe both of them may find the job a bit boring to be honest. It’s clear that they both enjoy the day to day work that comes with club management and that’s something they won’t get at international level.

“It would obviously be quite a considerable jump for either of them [Lampard and Gerrard], as they’re early on in their managerial careers, but sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice. I’m sure the players would love to have either of them managing them and sometimes you’ve just got to take the risk. If Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard was the England manager, then I believe the fans would love to see that.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite leading England to two Euros finals, and a World Cup semi-final, Southgate stepped away from the England job. He was the Three Lions' most successful manager since Sir Alfred Ramsey led the country to the 1966 World Cup triumph and finding someone to replace Southgate and build on his work is a tall order.
