David Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood likely to be rested before India Tests

The four players were part of Australia’s September tour of England, then went straight to the UAE for the IPL

Australia’s selectors will consider resting David Warner, Steven Smith, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood ahead of the Tests against India and they appear likely to enter that series without a first-class match under their belts as the management try to strike a balance between game time and the well-being of players moving from one bubble to another. Those four players have been included in Australia’s 18-man squad for the six limited-overs matches which begin on November 27, but they are also certainties for the Test side and there is an understanding that gaps will need to be created for them to spend some time away from hub life. Mitchell Starc and Matthew Wade, who will both begin their home summer in the Sheffield Shield on Friday, have been given time off in recent weeks. Two Australia A matches were included in the India tour schedule announced on Wednesday, one which overlaps the T20I series and then a day-night game at the SCG ahead of the pink-ball Test in Adelaide.National selector Trevor Hohns indicated that some of Australia’s Test squad – which will be named towards the end of the Sheffield Shield matches in Adelaide next month – could feature for Australia A but he said it would be unlikely that Warner, Smith, Cummins or Hazlewood would play, which would means them starting the Tests without a competitive long-format game since January.”Once they return from the IPL and get through their quarantine, I think it will be prudent for them to start preparing for red-ball cricket. That may or may not be in that Australia A game – more than likely it won’t be,” Hohns said. That quartet were part of the tour to England in September then went straight to the IPL. Warner, Smith and Cummins have been ever-present for their franchises and while Hazlewood has only had a handful of games it is not only the physical shape of the players that will be monitored.”We are very mindful of managing our players and trying at some stage to get them some time at home with their families,” Hohns said. “Of course, Test cricket is very important so there may be other times when we can give our players that play every format in particular a little bit of a break.”That’s something that will be addressed in the coming weeks and we’ll be having discussions with those players to see how they are feeling. Their health and well-being is the priority No. 1 and we want to do whatever we can to get the best out of them for the Test series.”Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins at a training drill•Getty Images

Starc, who quarantined for 14 days in Adelaide after the England tour and is now in the Sheffield Shield hub in the same city, albeit one that allows a bit more freedom than the tightly controlled biosecure bubbles, said that while cricketers are used to long tours and time away this season would be a challenge.”For guys who will be around hubs and bubbles for the majority of the summer it’s going to an important one to keep an eye on, obviously guys with families and kids which will make things even more difficult. It’s going to be a long time. The guys coming back from the IPL, they’ve been on the road a while already and they’ll have their quarantine then straight into a white-ball hub.”Likewise, for a few of us here we haven’t had too many days at home, I’ve only had 30 hours at home since August, so it will be important to be adaptable, be flexible but at the same time we are there to win games for Australia.”When asked if the views of the host broadcaster for the limited-overs matches would be considered around big-name stars being rested, Hohns said: “We take everything into account, but their health and well-being is a priority for us.”The challenge coming up for the players is highlighted by the fact that the first ODI on November 27 comes just two days after those coming from the UAE will have completed their quarantine, which means the Australians will only gather as a full squad on the eve of the series.Hohns remained hopeful that it might be possible for some movement between international and BBL bubbles to enable players not in the Test XI to keep playing cricket but conceded it could prove too difficult.”We’ll have a look at any players we might be able to release to Big Bash. It will be harder [than normal], but team management are working through that and seeing what we can and can’t do. It would be ideal, but at the moment nothing is ideal so we have to go with the flow and work on things as they crop up.”

Another close encounter on the cards as evenly matched Supernovas, Trailblazers face off in title round

Big picture

The Women’s T20 Challenge 2020 – it still feels like a bit of an afterthought. But here we are, three matches in, and it’s the final now, between Harmanpreet Kaur’s Supernovas and Smriti Mandhana’s Trailblazers. This tournament was to feature four teams, but went back to three, like last season, leaving one team with the prospect of being knocked out after one bad game and packing their bags within 48 hours of starting out. That unfortunate team was Velocity, captained by Mithali Raj. They slumped to 47 all out less than a day after securing an impressive last-over win in the tournament opener against Supernovas. On Saturday, Velocity needed a favour from the same side that caused all the damage for them – Trailblazers. But Mandhana’s team couldn’t score the ten needed in the final over to secure a win and leave Supernovas winless. They will have a chance again, even if it means nothing for Raj’s team.So Jhulan Goswami vs Jemimah Rodrigues. Poonam Yadav vs Deepti Sharma. Sophie Ecclestone, the top-ranked women’s T20I bowler, trying to contain the big-hitting Chamari Athapaththu, Deandra Dottin looking to go big against Ayabonga Khaka… sub-plots to watch out for, the phases in the game that might make this one go down to the wire too, like their 146 for 6 vs 144 for 5 contest the other day.

Players to watch

In last year’s final, Radha Yadav calmly stepped out to scythe a full ball to the boundary to clinch the title for Supernovas. It was astonishing in a sense, because for a while it seemed as if the chase was solely dependent on Kaur. On Saturday, Radha delivered with her accurate left-arm spin – varying her pace, lengths and angles to defend ten off the final over to put her side in the final. Radha is all of 20, already into her third year as an international cricketer. Her improvement can only mean great signs for Indian women’s cricket with the amount of cricket they have coming up in the next 18 months – a 50-over World Cup, a T20 World Cup and the Commonwealth Games, apart from the bilaterals in the run-up to those events.Chamari Athapaththu doesn’t get the kind of attention some of the other big-hitting batters in women’s cricket get. She isn’t talked of in the same league as, say, Stafanie Taylor or Suzie Bates or Alyssa Healy mainly because Sri Lanka aren’t among the top teams, and she carries the batting single-handedly. On Saturday, by shredding some top-quality bowlers to make a match-winning 48-ball 67, with five sixes, she gave glimpses of what she can do if she has the freedom to play her own game without having to worry about the rest of the order.Jemimah Rodrigues has a lively presence on the field and off it. She plays the guitar, she plays hockey, she dances, she isn’t too shabby an interviewer either… but her two outings so far have resulted in two single-digit scores. This is a good time to remind her many fans of her batting skills too – Rodrigues can kill them softly, play the gaps the way Raj does; it’s time to show off those skills too.

Transfer guru who scouted Ilia Gruev is "trying to lure" another Leeds star

With Leeds United set for another year of Championship football, some of Europe's top sides are sensing an opportunity to lure their best players away from Elland Road.

Leeds set to lose big talents this summer

As soon as the final whistle at Wembley confined Leeds to another season of Championship football it became clear that the Whites are set to lose a number of their top talents this summer.

Leeds United chasing move for "unbelievable" £5k-p/w defender this summer

Talks are in the early stages for a potential deal.

ByBen Browning Jun 1, 2024

The first to be linked with a move away from West Yorkshire was winger Crysencio Summerville. After scoring 19 goals last season the Dutchman has caught the attention of multiple Premier League sides. Newcastle are the latest team rumoured to be making a move for the 22-year-old, with Liverpool and Chelsea also reportedly interested.

Another name doing the rounds in Leeds circles is Wilfried Gnonto. The Italian has been linked with a move away from Elland Road, with the local press suggesting that he could well be on the move from Leeds this summer with a price tag of around £30million reportedly slapped on the 20-year-old.

As if losing arguably their two strongest attacking outlets was not bad enough for Leeds, it now appears that their best young player has caught the eye of one of Europe's elite clubs, with a top scout making his desires clear.

Top scout wants to lure Gray away from Elland Road

As first reported by Sports Witness, the German press have claimed that Borussia Dortmund's squad planner Sven Mislintat is "trying to lure" Archie Gray away from Elland Road. The outlet claims that the German outift have been keen on the midfielder for a long time with Leeds' failure to return to the Premier League furthering this interest.

Mislintat may be a familiar name to some of the Elland Road faithful, with the man dubbed "diamond eye" in the stands during the loss to Southampton in last month's playoff final. Whilst the Dortmund man was scouting Ilia Gruev at Wembley, it appears that he has also shown an facination in his midfield partner turned right back.

Archie Gray

The news of interest in Gray should not come as a surprise to Leeds fans, with the 18-year-old attracting plenty of intrigue from across Europe this summer. Back in April it was reported that representatives from Bayern Munich and Real Madrid watched the midfielder during a 3-1 win over Hull City.

The England youth international has also been linked with a move to a number of domestic outfits with the most recent rumours linking Gray with a move to Tottenham Hotspur. Joining Spurs in the race for the teenager's signature is their North London rivals Arsenal, who view Gray as a potential partner for Declan Rice.

Whilst the interest in Gray is clear to see there is no evidence that Leeds are looking to sell this summer. Recent reports suggest that Daniel Farke wants to make the 18-year-old the heartbeat of his team next season, showing a desire to cash in on basically anyone but their local lad.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Szczesny played for nine years for the Gunners before moving to Italy as he briefly signed for AS Roma before joining Juventus where he spent the next seven seasons. He faced the Argentina captain on six occasions in his career, out of which he won once with the Premier League club in 2011 in a Champions League clash. Messi has scored thrice against the custodian while he has made quite a few memorable saves including stopping the 37-year-old's penalty at the 2022 World Cup.

  • WHAT WOJCIECH SZCZESNY SAID

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the 34-year-old said, "I was always scared to play against Leo. There are probably other players who have scored more against me. But he was the only one I was actually afraid to play against. Because he was that good."

When asked about the most memorable save he made against the Argentine, the Barca star replied, "The best or the biggest? That changes. The most satisfying save was Messi's penalty in the Qatar World Cup, but it wasn't the best save in my career. The stadium and the rival made that moment very special for me."

Alan Shearer

1988-2006

Alan Shearer is the all-time top scorer in the Premier League and one of the league’s finest strikers.

When Shearer made his full debut as a 17-year-old at Southampton, he scored a hat-trick to establish himself as a star. Due to his goalscoring ability, he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers, where he won the Premier League in the 1994/95 season, securing the Golden Boot that year as well as in the two campaigns that followed.

In 1996, Shearer joined Newcastle United for a then-record transfer fee. He turned into a legend while on Tyneside, amassing 206 goals to become the club’s all-time top scorer. Gordon Banks

1958-1977

One of the best goalkeepers in football history, Gordon Banks left behind a legacy of amazing talent and sportsmanship.

The pinnacle of Banks’ career was his crucial contribution to England’s 1966 World Cup victory.

He started his club career at Chesterfield before going to Leicester City, where he won the League Cup in 1964. The high point of his club career came when he moved to Stoke City in 1967. There, he won the League Cup twice and cemented his place among the game’s top goalkeepers.

Banks received 73 caps for England, but his save, dubbed the “Save of the Century” from a Pelé header during the 1970 World Cup against Brazil, is still remembered as one of the most memorable moments in football history. Numerous honours were given to Banks in recognition of his achievements in football, including six FIFA Goalkeeper of the Year titles.

Paul Gascoigne

1985-2004

Paul Gascoigne is one of the sport’s most gifted players. His remarkable talent, originality and flair on the field was demonstrated throughout his career, which also reflects his turbulent personal life off it.

With Newcastle United, where Gascoigne started his football career, his natural potential was immediately apparent. With his ability to dribble and score goals, he made an impression in midfield and eventually moved to Tottenham Hotspur. Gazza’s career peaked with Spurs, especially during the FA Cup run in the 1990/91 season.

However, a devastating knee injury he sustained in that cup final tarnished his time there and had a huge impact on his career trajectory. Following Tottenham, his career featured stints at Lazio in Italy, where he struggled with injury before becoming an icon among supporters, and Rangers in Scotland, where he had a remarkable comeback and won two Scottish Premier League titles.

Gascoigne was a star for England, winning 57 caps and becoming a national hero in Italy at the FIFA World Cup 1990. His performances propelled England to the semi-finals, and his touching response to receiving a yellow card in the semi-final that would have prevented him from playing in the final won over supporters all across the world.

Gazza was also instrumental in England’s success in Euro 96, with his goal against Scotland standing as one of the competition’s most iconic moments.

Wayne Rooney

It’s safe to say that Wayne Rooney is regarded as one of the greatest players of his time and one of the game’s most accomplished attackers.

At the age of 16, Rooney made his professional debut for Everton, where he immediately rose to prominence as one of the most talked-about young players in English football.

After making the switch to Manchester United in 2004, he went on an incredibly successful stint there, becoming a vital member of the squad. Rooney won multiple trophies throughout his 13 seasons with United, including five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, four League Cups, one Champions League and one Europa League.

He also broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s long-standing goalscoring record, scoring 253 times to become Manchester United’s all-time top scorer.

Rooney has the second-most caps for England on the international scene, with 120. He also became England’s all-time top scorer with 53 goals, but was later overtaken by Harry Kane.

Harry Kane is currently one of the world’s best strikers and an important member of Bayern Munich and the England national team.

Starting out in the youth system at Spurs, Kane made his first appearance for Tottenham Hotspur in 2011. However, he didn’t start to show himself as a prolific goalscorer until the 2014/15 campaign, when he quickly rose to prominence as Spurs’ top striker. He broke various club and league scoring records and earned multiple Premier League Golden Boots.

After earning his first senior cap in 2015, Kane has been a crucial member of the England squad on the international scene. At the 2018 World Cup, he led England to their best World Cup performance since 1990 with a fourth-place finish, earning the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer in the process.

His goalscoring prowess and leadership have been essential to England’s recent successes on the international stage, including their run to the Euro 2020 final. He is now England’s all-time top scorer, too.

Sheffield Wednesday could sign dream McNeill alternative who Rohl rates

Sheffield Wednesday are showing no signs of stopping anytime soon when it comes to incomings, as the expected list of new faces anticipated to join Danny Rohl's ranks this summer increases by the day.

The latest signing announced by the Owls was the left-field capture of Polish winger Olaf Kobacki, with another incoming in the form of ex-Manchester United striker Charlie McNeill expected to follow suit soon.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

The excitement levels in South Yorkshire are rising as a result, ahead of what many Owls fans will hope is a positive season in its entirety, after staving off relegation miraculously last campaign, with a transfer reunion also potentially on the cards.

Wednesday still keen on transfer reunion

According to football journalist Alan Nixon, via his social media earlier this week, the rejuvenated Championship outfit are still keen on a deal involving former loan star Ike Ugbo, even with talk about McNeill entering the building.

Other striker targets such as Cardiff City man Sory Kaba had been talked about, but with this latest development from Nixon, Wednesday could continue to be ambitious in the transfer market and seal a deal for the explosive Canadian attacker.

What Ugbo could offer Wednesday

Ugbo could even be seen as a dream alternative to McNeill, if a move for the young free agent goes awry, with Rohl licking his lips at the prospect of managing the Troyes man again next season after his electric loan stint at Hillsborough made a huge difference in Wednesday beating the drop.

The German boss will know he can rely on the 25-year-old to score big goals this forthcoming season in crunch moments, having witnessed the former Chelsea youth player score seven times from 19 games when Wednesday were desperately attempting to keep their heads above water.

It could, therefore, be a seamless and easy transition for Ugbo upon his return to familiar surroundings, with the Canadian striker developing a fruitful relationship with the likes of Anthony Musaba in attack when still in South Yorkshire, as the Owls found their shooting boots at the best possible time when struggling at the foot of the league.

Whereas, it could be a difficult learning curve for McNeill if he does join, having struggled to make an impact in the senior game away from Man United when chucked out on loan various times.

Rohl will pray that the 20-year-old can come good if he is donning a Wednesday strip come the start of the 24/25 campaign, with a ridiculous 29 strikes netted from 35 games competing in the U18 Premier League at youth level for the Red Devils making him an attractive possible buy still.

Ugbo has shown, via various loan spells as a nomadic individual as seen with the table above, that he can thrive in many different locations under pressure when it comes to bagging goals.

Whereas, McNeill doesn't quite have that same wealth of experience, with his time at Stevenage last campaign seeing him make just three appearances, after struggling previously in Wales with Newport County.

Therefore, if there's a possibility Wednesday can get Ugbo back next season, it's certainly a move worth exploring, gaining an immediate finished product as a result.

Southampton reach agreement with £42k-p/w ace ahead of permanent transfer

Southampton have reportedly reached an agreement with an “incredible” player ahead of a permanent St Mary’s transfer.

Southampton planning for Premier League return

The Saints and Russell Martin secured promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following a Championship playoff final win over Leeds United last month.

Following the victory at Wembley, Martin admitted that he isn’t planning on changing his style for the top flight in 2024/25.

“For me, if you win this way, it’s the best way. There’s no right or wrong way but it’s what I believe in, it’s what we believe in. And we finally won something doing it … so I guess it will be some form of validation for some people. I love what we do and I’m not going to change and I’m sure it will start – it probably already has – that we won’t play this way in the Premier League and all of that stuff, the scrutiny and the intensity that will come with that. It is up to us to prove ourselves right and make sure we embrace it without losing who we are.”

Southampton now eyeing move for "intelligent" £35,000-a-week La Liga ace

He has some Premier League experience…

ByTom Cunningham Jun 6, 2024

The club will more than likely be busy in the summer transfer window looking to bolster their squad, with a permanent move for Taylor Harwood-Bellis already secured due to an obligation to buy clause in his loan deal from Manchester City. Meanwhile, there have been rumours about a return to the south coast for Adam Lallana, whereas a bid has been made for teenage forward Jeronimo Domina.

Alongside Harwood-Bellis, the Saints could also look at permanent moves for fellow loan stars Flynn Downes and Ryan Fraser from West Ham and Newcastle United respectively, and it looks as if there has been a development with the latter.

Southampton reach Ryan Fraser agreement

According to The Athletic, Newcastle are looking to offload Fraser this summer and the player ‘has agreed a deal with Southampton’. It is added that ‘there are just details to be finalised with Newcastle’ ahead of a St Mary’s return.

Fraser played his part in the Saints’ promotion-winning campaign, making 44 appearances across the season, scoring eight times and registering three assists. The 30-year-old, on £42,000-a-week, started against Leeds at Wembley and was hailed as “incredible” by Martin following the win.

"Me, him and Matt Ritchie had many an evening in the Scotland squad where we would usually end up wrestling or fighting on some level.

"I know he's strong. I know he's aggressive. People questioned why we signed Wee Man. I knew him so well as a teammate and he has had a really tough couple of seasons. He has been incredible for us. "Not just with his performances but in training every day, the way he is has been amazing."

A permanent move to the south coast appears to be on the cards, and he’ll offer Martin plenty of Premier League experience back in the top flight, looking to add to his 173 games in the division next season.
