Tim Paine apologises for SCG behaviour: 'My leadership wasn't good enough'

“If you pretend yesterday was okay…then you’ve probably got a problem”

Daniel Brettig12-Jan-2021In the moments after India secured an unlikely draw at the SCG, Australia’s captain Tim Paine privately conceded to R Ashwin that he had made himself “look the fool” by calling the touring spin bowler a “d*******” and then following up by dropping his third catch of the day.Fewer than 24 hours later, Paine elected to publicly apologise for poor behaviour on the field throughout the Sydney Test while also conceding that his darkening mood ultimately contributed to his team’s failure to close out victory over India as his usually supple gloves clanged vital chances offered up by Rishabh Pant and Hanuma Vihari. At the age of 36, nearly 18 months after he had originally pondered retirement at the end of the 2019 Ashes, Paine is well aware that in terms of both performance and behaviour he cannot afford anymore days like the final one of the SCG Test, and made that much patently clear after jumping into the media seat as a last-minute substitute for Nathan Lyon.”International cricket at the moment with the hub life and in the bubble you have a fair bit of time to yourself and last night for me was one of those moments to sit back and reflect on the Test match. I think it was important to address some things from yesterday,” Paine said. “I want to apologise for the way I went about things yesterday. I’m someone who prides themselves on the way I lead this team and yesterday was a poor reflection of that.Related

“My leadership wasn’t good enough, I let the pressure of the game get to me, it affected my mood and then from there affected my performance. Yesterday when I came off the ground my reflection was purely on my wicketkeeping. Sitting back last night and reflecting on the whole game, I think I said to our players yesterday I’ve had a really poor game as a leader, not so much as a captain but certainly as a leader.”I’m a captain who wants to enjoy the game. I’m a captain who wants to play the game with a smile on their face and yesterday I fell short of my expectations and our team standards. So I’m human, I want to apologise for the mistakes that I made yesterday. It’s certainly not a reflection of the way I want to lead this team. We’ve set really high standards over the last 18 months and yesterday was a bit of a blip on the radar and something that I felt I needed to come out and address.”On reflection, Paine recognised that his mood had been poor for several days before the conclusion of the match, reflected in his ICC fine for dissent when questioning a not out verdict via the DRS during India’s first innings. He will speak to the team once they reconvene in Brisbane ahead of the series decider that begins on Friday. There was a verbal exchange or two between Tim Paine and R Ashwin•AFP/Getty Images”Bitterly disappointed with the way I went about it. I felt my mood throughout the whole Test match was probably a little bit off, the way I spoke to the umpires early on day two was also unacceptable,” he said. “I’ve got to cop that on the chin, it’s not the way I want to lead this Australian team, certainly not a reflection of how I want to do it going forward. I always talk to our players about playing this game on skill and not on emotion and yesterday I fell short of my own standards and expectations.”Paine noted how his increasing levels of agitation ultimately led to him being too tense and stiff in the shoulders and hands, leading to the dropped chances that went a long way towards averting defeat for India. However he was also firm that in recognising this, he would work to get back to his best at the Gabba and had not considered giving the captaincy or the wicketkeeping gloves away.”Normally for a wicketkeeper if I’m dropping catches then I’ve looked at the technical stuff and that was okay, so for me I think it was all around my mood, being a bit tense, and not being focused on my number one job at the time, which is to catch the ball,” he said. “I was distracted by other stuff and a little bit agitated and grumpy at times. So for me the best version of Tim Paine playing cricket and wicketkeeping and captaining is someone who’s got a smile on his face, someone who is enjoying the game and when I’m like that, I’m a very good wicketkeeper.”I think if you pretend yesterday was okay, and my behaviour was okay and my wicketkeeping was okay then you’ve probably got a problem. But I’ve said a few times in the last six months I feel like I’m actually getting better as a cricketer. I’ve played my best cricket in the last six months, yesterday was a poor day.”Asked whether he had set back the regeneration of the Australian team, a long process going back to the infamy of the Newlands scandal in 2018, Paine said he and the team wanted to be known for setting high standards of behaviour, rather than the opprobrium he has faced for the way he carried himself at the SCG.”I think the standards we’ve set ourselves over the last two and a half years has been a really high standard and we want that,” Paine said. “We know people around the country look up to us and look to us for leadership and our kids look up to us as heroes. So we know people expect that from us now and we understand that’s how it is and we sign up for that and I was the one who fell short of that yesterday.”I spoke to JL [Justin Langer], Andrew McDonald and Matthew Mott – and that was exactly what I said, I felt I had a really poor game in terms of my leadership and that affected our team.”I raised it with [Langer] and said – look, there’s little things, I’m normally a pretty relaxed person in the changerooms. And even when we were batting in this Test, I was on edge – I was wandering around the changerooms. I couldn’t sit still, couldn’t watch and I think that added to the tension in our changerooms and I pride myself on, if anything, taking the tension out of our changeroom, not adding to it.”

Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the second Test against West Indies, beginning in Dhaka on February 11, because of the left-thigh injury that kept him away from large chunks of the action during the first Test in Chattogram. *Bangladesh have named Soumya Sarkar as his replacement.According to a BCB statement, the board’s medical team will continue to treat Shakib, who will, however, leave the team’s bio-security bubble for the time being. “After careful consideration it has been confirmed that he will not be available for the second Test,” it read.Related

Shakib picked up the injury during the second day’s play in Chattogram, when he attempted to stop a ball off his own bowling with his foot. He continued to bowl for a while longer, but neither batted nor bowled after leaving the field later that afternoon. Bangladesh, who had a 171-run lead after the first-innings exchanges, eventually lost the Test by three wickets with debutant Kyle Mayers hitting a stunning 210* to take West Indies to victory. He had left the field on that occasion too, and joined the national team’s training a few days before the first Test, which began on February 3.Despite the injuries, Shakib’s return to international cricket following the one-year ICC ban has been a successful one. He was the Player of the Series in the ODIs, where he returned 4 for 8 in the first game and hit 43* and 51 in the next two games as Bangladesh won 3-0.No replacement has yet been announced by the Bangladesh selectors, who had earlier named an 18-man Test squad for the two matches.*This copy was updated on February 9 when the BCB announced Shakib Al Hasan’s replacement

Alongside Philogene: Villa could land instant Diaby replacement for £21m

Unai Emery has acted swiftly this summer with regard to bolstering the first-team squad at Aston Villa as they prepare to face Europe’s elite in the Champions League next season.

So far, six new arrivals have landed in the Midlands, with a seventh seemingly set to be confirmed following reports that academy graduate Jaden Philogene will return to the club after just a solitary season at Hull City.

This extensive early recruitment has , however, been offset by a few departures which were required in order for the club to remain within the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations.

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery during a Premier League game.

The likes of Douglas Luiz, Tim Ireogbunam and Morgan Sanson have all left Villa in recent weeks, freeing up some space in Emery’s squad while bringing in some funds which could be used for future transfers.

They won't be the only players leaving as it now looks like someone who was only signed last summer for a club-record fee is close to making a move away from the Premier League.

Latest on Moussa Diaby's future

According to journalist Gianluigi Longari, Diaby has reportedly agreed on personal terms to join Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad this summer, with negotiations set to begin with Villa over a transfer fee.

It looks like the Middle Eastern side are going to invest €60m (£50.4m) in order to lure him away from England and this could see Emery cash in on the French winger after just a single season in the Premier League.

The club would effectively be recouping the fee they paid to sign him from Bayer Leverkusen in the first place and this cash influx could give the Spaniard some flexibility in the transfer market in terms of new signings.

Moussa Diaby

The Frenchman was seen as a marquee signing, but he failed to really live up to the hype of a club-record transfer.

Moussa Diaby’s season in numbers for Aston Villa

Upon his arrival, it looked as though Villa had hit the jackpot by signing a player of Diaby’s class.

The supporters were genuinely excited. After all, this was a player who had registered 97 goal contributions in just 172 games for the Bundesliga side, showing how effective he was in front of goal.

Despite this wonderful spell in Germany, Diaby found a much harder time in England, scoring only ten goals last season in all competitions, chipping in with nine assists too.

Decent, but hardly spectacular, especially for a player who cost in excess of £50m. Failing to gain a consistent run in the starting XI didn’t help matters, but he struggled to cope with the demands of the Premier League.

Should Diaby depart the club in the coming weeks, Emery will no doubt be eyeing a replacement who could come in and make an impression straight away.

Could he turn to Serie A in order to find an heir to the Frenchman? As it appears, Emery is keen on making a move for a player who has plenty to prove.

Aston Villa showing interest in Serie A star

It is no secret that the club are keen on bolstering their squad with talent worthy of performing in the Champions League. Could Federico Chiesa be a player worth signing?

Juventus forward Federico Chiesa.

According to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport (via 90min), Villa have been mentioned as a club who are keen on bringing the Juventus winger to Villa Park this summer.

The Italian dynamo could even be available for a fee as little as €25m (£21m), which is a third of what Diaby could be sold for, which makes a move for Chiesa a real no-brainer.

Chiesa hasn’t exactly enjoyed the best of times over the previous couple of years, but a move to Villa and the fresh start that goes with it could be all he needs to recapture past glories.

Why Federico Chiesa could be a good signing for Aston Villa

The 2020 European Championships saw Chiesa at his very best. Not only did the winger feature for an Italian side that won their first continental title since 1968, but he also scored twice during the competition as Italy defeated England on penalties in the final.

The sky was certainly the limit for the "magical player" after this glory – as hailed by journalist Raj Chohan – but a spate of injuries has hampered his progress at the Old Lady since 2021.

Over the previous three years, he has missed 80 games for club and country due to a succession of injury issues, but he did find some form last season for Juventus.

The winger managed to make 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring ten goals while registering three assists as he began to put his injury issues behind him for good.

Among his teammates last season, Chiesa ranked second for goals and assists (11) in the Italian top flight, along with ranking second for shots on target per game (0.8), first for big chances created (12), key passes per game (1.6) and for successful dribbles per game (1.1), showing how vital he was to his club last season.

If he could carry this type of form into the 2024/25 campaign, there is no doubt Chiesa would make a wonderful impact in the Premier League.

Described as “world-class” during Euro 2020 by journalist Zach Lowy, Chiesa could be a perfect replacement for Diaby next season should the French winger move to the Middle East.

Not only did he score the same number of goals as Diaby, but as mentioned, he could only cost around £21m this summer to join from Juventus.

Aston Villa now set to lose "amazing" squad player with medical booked

The deal is reportedly progressing quickly…

1 ByTom Cunningham Jul 11, 2024

While Villa are in a solid position off the field, Emery still has to be smart with regard to future signings, such as with the impending return of young Philogene for a reported fee of just £13m.

If interest in Chiesa is also concrete, then this should be one that Emery is intent on getting over the line as soon as possible so he can settle into life at Villa.

For £21m, Villa will be getting plenty of value for money should a move go through in the coming weeks.

#AngeOut? Sacking Postecoglou won't fix Tottenham – but loveable Aussie is running out of time to keep Spurs from the brink of another disaster

Spurs have dropped to 10th in the Premier League table heading into the November international break, and pressure is mounting on their head coach.

Tottenham Hotspur are football's best example of a living paradox. They are thrilling and frustrating, fantastic and feeble, tremendously troublesome and wickedly woeful. To best demonstrate this on a tangible level, they sit 10th in the standings, yet boast the Premier League's best goals-scored tally and second-best goal difference, while they have one of the division's better defensive records.

For Spurs fans, they have barely had time to bask in the warm, undersoil-heated glow their new billion-pound stadium was meant to provide since moving in over half a decade ago. The board were cut-throat with their decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino, but have failed to find a suitable long-term replacement for him since, cycling their way through permanent successors in Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and now Ange Postecoglou.

Success continues to steer clear of this part of north London, and like the many men who came before him, Postecoglou is now under the microscope for failing to deliver. Tottenham were booed off after allowing Ipswich Town their first top-flight win in 22 years on Sunday, halting momentum and sending them into a fifth-successive international break off the back of a disappointing defeat.

The mood around N17 is souring again. Postecoglou has little time to prove he is the right man to lead the club forward.

    Walking into a mess

As has been well documented, Postecoglou was not the first choice for the Tottenham job when the vacancy arose in 2023. Talks were held with Julian Nagelsmann, not soon after his sacking by Bayern Munich, but hardly advanced. Luis Enrique was a top candidate when Fabio Paratici was managing director of football, though he couldn't convince the board – from his position officially off the club's staff owing to a global ban – to take the plunge. An enormous portion of the fanbase pined for an emotional reunion with Pochettino, though Daniel Levy and co were against the idea and he joined rivals Chelsea instead. Arne Slot became the top target, only to sign a new contract at Feyenoord and land a more glamorous role at Liverpool 12 months later.

There was even a fair dose of fan resistance when Postecoglou eventually emerged as Spurs' number-one option, with the short-lived '#NoToPostecoglou' trend dying almost as quickly as it had began in early June 2023. Supporters were divided and the club was fractured on so many different levels, but everyone was aligned in wanting a breath of fresh air to ease their troubles.

Postecoglou brought just that. In the absence of matches ahead of his first pre-season in charge, the Tottenham faithful consumed every piece of media and content regarding their new Australian manager as they could – books, podcast appearances, a famously infamous row on domestic TV during his days as a youth-team coach, you name it. The first step to a fresh start is an acceptance of wanting something different, and hearts were immediately opened to the affable Postecoglou, who took his charm and charisma up a notch when results and performances followed at the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign.

The mainstream media bought into him as well. He was a walking soundbite good for a quote on any occasion, an expressive extrovert who brought the tactical nuance loved by bloggers but no-nonsense mannerisms adored by the masses. Even away from the pitch and from interviews, Postecoglou was finding ways to become football's most likeable character, notably with his charitable and kind actions at fan forums.

Spurs and Postecoglou's honeymoon didn't last forever, ultimately falling apart at the seams in a memorable nine-man collapse against Pochettino's Chelsea, but there was enough evidence to suggest Postecoglou had Spurs – as a team and a club – trending in the right direction again.

    Clear identity

Very few teams are built on a history of playing negative football, but at least Tottenham – for better or worse, richer or poorer, sometimes in sickness and health – have always prided themselves on entertainment. A Spurs team should be fun to watch irrespective of what their goals are.

The worst part about the Mourinho, Nuno and Conte trifecta was that not only were Tottenham terrible, they were terrible to watch while doing so. There was a brief half-season period under the Italian where Spurs embraced the directness and resilience of his approach, but his defensive nature entered his players into a self-fulfilling prophecy of regression.

Postecoglou's Tottenham are now one of the most distinctly recognisable teams across all of Europe. When they're good, they're very, good, the best side to watch in the entire Premier League when all is flowing smoothly. During Erik ten Hag's final season-and-a-quarter at Manchester United, his outfit were often contrasted to Spurs, criticising the lack of identity the Dutchman failed to instil despite the good grace of the two trophies he had brought to Old Trafford.

Thanks to Postecoglou, Tottenham still have the foundations for team who play with style and intensity. Now it's about making everything else work.

    Results business

There's no running away from the cold, harsh truths of Postecoglou's record, however. With only 16 points accrued from a rather favourable set of opening 11 fixtures, Tottenham are on track to end the season with a mere tally of 57, which would represent their worst Premier League return since 2008-09. You know, the season where they were bottom of the table in autumn and had to bring in Harry Redknapp to save them.

Spurs also collapsed towards the end of 2023-24 to kill their hopes of a top-four finish too – over their last 17 matches, they have taken 22 points. It's all well and good having the right intentions when you cross that white line onto the pitch, but it won't matter if you don't step back off it on the winning side.

In the cups, Tottenham can look forward to a Carabao Cup quarter-final with United having already eliminated Manchester City and they remain among the favourites to win the Europa League. There's solace in that.

    Acceptance of blame

Unlike his predecessors – notably Conte, who simply couldn't wait to combust after his final game in charge, a 3-3 draw at Southampton – Postecoglou doesn't want to shirk responsibility and is totally accepting of both the mistakes he has made and the need for further change.

After Sunday's loss to Ipswich, he said to : "Hugely disappointing. We started slow and passively. We gave ourselves a mountain to climb. Second half we had chances but didn’t do enough to win the game. It's just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players. It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility. We can’t give ourselves those kind of mountains to climb."

Postecoglou also wasn't afraid to front up for the club's in-house media show, so usually full of positivity but on this occasion sombre. He added: "I guess from my perspective, it's unacceptable because we started the game nowhere near the levels we needed to be and gave ourselves a mountain to climb. Second half, we had the ascendancy and enough opportunities to get the job done but we didn't do enough with it.

"It's my responsibility, I've got to fix it. We've been inconsistent this year, fair to say, and we shouldn't be that inconsistent. When you are that inconsistent, the responsibility lies with me to help the players overcome that."

Now, obviously, the problem is having to give this same old spiel after each of your five defeats from 11 league games. Progress isn't linear however, especially at Tottenham.

Leeds could unleash Gnonto in new role by signing £15m EFL star

Leeds United must split their focus between preparing for the opening game of the 2024/25 Championship season and pursuing targets in the summer transfer window.

The Whites face off against Portsmouth at Elland Road on Saturday in their first match of the campaign, as they look to bounce back to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

Using the transfer window to build a side that is capable of competing for promotion will be important and that is why the next few weeks could be crucial to their chances of a top-flight return.

Daniel Farke has already lost three of his key players from last season, as Archie Gray, Glen Kamara, and Crysencio Summerville have all completed moves away from Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, Alex Cairns, and Joe Rothwell have been added to the Leeds squad to bolster the manager's options across the park.

The exit of Summerville, however, will need further work from the Whites in the transfer market and they are reportedly looking to the Championship to find a replacement for him.

Leeds learn price for forward target

According to Football Insider, Leeds are in the market to add a new winger to their squad to provide the team with more firepower after they sold their Dutch whiz.

The report claims that the Whites are interested in a deal to sign Jonathan Rowe from Championship rivals Norwich City, who they beat in the play-offs last season.

It states that the Canaries, however, are looking for a sizeable fee of £15m to allow their academy graduate to move on from Carrow Road this summer.

The outlet adds that the West Yorkshire outfit have already offered £7m to sign the England U21 international – a bid that was swiftly swatted away by Johannes Hoff Thorup's side.

Norwich are looking for more than double that fee after they sold Gabriel Sara to Galatasaray for £20m, which strengthened their negotiating position when it came to Rowe.

Football Insider also claims that the Canaries are reluctant to cash in on the winger to one of their divisional rivals, as it would weaken their chances of promotion and strengthen Leeds'.

This all means that a move for the English flanker looks set to be a difficult one for the club to pull, given Norwich's stance and the £15m valuation on his head.

If they can get a deal over the line for him, though, then Farke could unleash Italian forward Wilfried Gnonto in a new role for the 2024/25 campaign.

Where Jonathan Rowe could play for Leeds

The 21-year-old attacker is a versatile talent who can play on the left or the right due to him being comfortable dribbling, passing, and shooting on either foot.

However, the majority of his appearances in the 2023/24 campaign came on the right side of the attack for Norwich, with Spanish whiz Borja Sainz deployed on the left.

In fact, his first goal for the Canaries came from him drifting inside from the right to unleash a rocket of a left-footed shot into the top corner against Hull City on the opening day, as shown in the clip above.

Playing on the right allows Rowe to either come into the middle to utilise his incredibly strong 'weak' foot or to go on the outside of defenders on his preferred right-foot to create for himself or others.

In the 2023/24 campaign, the England youth international, whose movement was hailed as "impressive" by analyst Ben Mattinson, showcased his ability to provide a big threat in the final third.

As you can see in the table above, Rowe is a proven Championship goalscorer who could come in and bolster Farke's options on the flanks.

The Norwich star, who scored four goals in six pre-season games this summer, could come in and play on the right side of the German's frontline, which would then open up the left side Gnonto to be unleashed in a new role this season.

Potential new role for Wilfried Gnonto

Summerville dominated the left flank for Leeds last season with 19 goals and nine assists in the Championship, which meant that other players rarely got the chance to showcase their talent in that position.

His exit has opened up a vacancy in that role and Gnonto could step up to make it his own if Rowe comes in to play on the right, instead of as a direct replacement for Summerville in the left-wing slot.

In the 2023/24 campaign, the 20-year-old talent played the majority of his games on the right but he could thrive even more on the left side for Leeds.

As you can see in the table above, Gnonto is a lethal finisher who can outperform the quality of chances that are created for him, with eight goals from 5.36 xG.

But he potentially suffered from Georgino Rutter's passing angles through the middle of the park. As a predominantly left-footed player, the Frenchman often opened up on the left side of the pitch and threaded passes through to Summerville in the left channel and in central positions on that side.

This resulted in the Dutch winger ending the season with 16.41 xG in the Championship, whilst Rutter created 22 'big chances', which shows that the team consistently created high-quality opportunities for him in the left wing role.

Now, imagine Gnonto using his incredibly efficient finishing skills with the level of chance creation that he would get from playing on the left with Rutter's passing angles on his left foot.

Farke's own Klich: Leeds express interest in signing "exciting" £12m star

The Whites are reportedly keen on a deal to sign the Premier League youngster.

ByDan Emery Aug 5, 2024

The Italian dynamo could, as Summerville did, cut in on his right foot to make the most of Rutter's creativity and provide a fantastic goalscoring presence on the left flank, with Rowe then lining up on the right to form a very exciting attack for Farke in the Championship this season.

Outscored Osimhen: Chelsea could sign bigger star than Gyokeres in £20m ace

It feels as though Chelsea have been searching for a new striker to help lead the Enzo Maresca revolution for months, but as of yet, they are no closer to securing a deal for any of their current targets.

Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been a name on the Blues’ radar for many months now, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming the Italian side are still open to letting him leave if they receive the right offer.

Current Chelsea man Romelu Lukaku has been touted with a move in the opposite direction to work with Antonio Conte, potentially allowing Maresca to secure a cut-price deal for Osimhen in the process.

Victor Osimhen

He undoubtedly would be a huge addition, likely to demand a huge weekly wage, as Romano also stated that the 25-year-old is unwilling to cut his £200k-per-week earnings to move this summer.

However, despite the recent news about Osimhen’s potential transfer to Stamford Bridge, the club may be better off signing another talent who’s previously been linked with a move to West London.

Chelsea could land £20m ace who’s outscored Osimhen

Another one of the club’s transfer targets in recent times is Lille striker Jonathan David, who could be available on the cheap this summer.

The Canadian international registered 19 Ligue 1 goals last season and 26 in all competitions – far ahead of Osimhen's return of 17 goals – but could be on the move for just £20m with his contract set to expire in just 12 months' time.

Lille striker Jonathan David.

Chelsea are just one of a number of Premier League sides who have registered interest in the 24-year-old, with Newcastle United also in the race for his signature this summer.

He has the ability to be Maresca’s main man in 2024/25, as demonstrated by his stats, but he could also save the club a huge sum, with the hierarchy needing to prioritise a move for David over Osimhen and one other transfer target.

Why David could be a bigger talent than Gyokeres

Chelsea’s hunt for a new talisman has taken them all over Europe, as shown in their pursuit of Sporting Lisbon forward Viktor Gyokeres, who set the Liga Portugal alight last season.

The Swedish international registered 39 goal contributions in his 33 league appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, but would cost any interested party – including the Blues – at least £86m to secure a deal for Sporting’s star man.

Sporting CP strikerViktor Gyokeres.

When comparing Gyokeres to David in a statistical sense, the pair are very similar, but the Lille attacker has the edge in multiple key aspects that would make him perfect for Maresca’s possession-based system at Stamford Bridge.

The Canadian “phenom”, as dubbed by journalist Tony Marinaro, may have registered ten fewer goals than the Swede, but he’s matched or even bettered him in multiple areas within the final third.

The pair both averaged 0.22 goals per shot taken last season, whilst David managed to put 8% more of his efforts on target – potentially allowing him to take advantage of more chances in front of goal than Gyokeres.

In possession, the Canadian has simply dominated, completing 2.7 progressive passes per 90, whilst having a 10% better pass completion rate – making him the perfect fit for Maresca’s system, which demands every player to be comfortable in finding a teammate.

David also has the edge having regularly delivered in a top European league after hitting double figures in each of his four Ligue 1 campaigns, while Gyokeres had previously been merely plying his trade in England's second-tier at Coventry City.

When comparing the transfer fees and the stats of the two players, it’s clear that the Blues would be better off pursuing a move for the Lille forward than Gyokeres with his all-round game far superior to the £86m-rated star.

Fabrizio Romano: Deal agreed for 23 y/o Spurs player to complete move away

With just over a month until the summer transfer window slams shut, Tottenham Hotspur are set to show the door to one particular player who has struggled for game time in north London.

Tottenham transfer news

It's been a slow summer for the Lilywhites so far, but things could yet pick up amid links to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Federico Chiesa. The duo could join both Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray on the incomings list, with Gyokeres one who would particularly steal the headlines. A forward capable of replacing Harry Kane, Spurs may need to match his £86m release clause, but welcoming the Swede would undoubtedly prove to be a game-changer for Ange Postecoglou.

He’s another arrival for the future…

Meanwhile, on the departure front, those in north London have already shown the door to Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer, with the Dane swapping Spurs for Lyon in recent weeks, and he may not be the last name out the door. He could yet be joined by out-of-favour right-back Emerson Royal, who has been linked to both AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund and is almost certain to be joined by Bryan Gil.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Gil is expected to complete a loan move to Girona this summer after a deal was agreed. What's more, the winger is reportedly also set to extend his contract at Spurs, which will include a release clause worth €15m (£12.6m).

A player who has struggled to find his feet at Spurs, Gil is set to complete a loan move back to La Liga in the hope of finally discovering his best form once more.

"Great" Gil needs move

When Gil initially arrived in north London back in 2021, he was a player with plenty of promise. That promise has since dwindled, however, and after three years, he desperately needs his loan move to go well in the forthcoming campaign. Still just 23 years old, the winger is in no position to panic with plenty of time to turn things around, and he can use Giovani Lo Celso's previously successful loan move to Villarreal in 2022 as a fine example to follow.

Despite his limited minutes, Postecoglou was full of praise for Gil in the last campaign, telling Spurs' official website: "Bryan is one where in the last couple of weeks, it’s been great to have him working really hard in training, he’s missed all of the season so far, and it’s well chronicled that we’ve lost Ivan (Perisic) and lost Manor (Solomon), who play in that left wing position, so having Bryan available again ins great for us."

With a release clause worth just £13m set to be inserted into the Spaniard's new contract too, Gil may yet get the chance to leave Spurs on a permanent basis sooner rather than later.

The Swedish striker has emerged as one of the most sought-after talents in European football. With an astonishing 27 goal contributions in just 18 games during the 2024-25 season, Gyokeres further solidified his reputation with a stunning performance in Sporting's 4-1 Champions League triumph over Manchester City. His exceptional form has caught the attention of major clubs, including United and Bayern, who might be involved in a transfer battle next summer for the player.

Gyokeres is reported to have an £83 million ($105m) release clause in his contract, though it is rumoured that Sporting might consider offers closer to £61m ($77m). This potential discount could spark a bidding war among Europe’s elite. United’s interest in Gyokeres is unsurprising given their struggles in front of goal with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee still not firing on all cylinders. Moreover, the arrival of Ruben Amorim as manager at Old Trafford, following his successful stint at Sporting, could give the Red Devils a significant edge in securing the Swedish striker’s services.

DID YOU KNOW?

Football journalist Christian Falk in his column for argued that Amorim's presence may make it easier for United to lure the striker. Bayern, meanwhile, despite showing interest in Gyokeres, face a unique challenge. The Bavarian club already boast of having Kane, a marquee signing and central figure in their attack. This dynamic could deter Gyokeres from joining them, as he is unlikely to settle for a secondary role behind the England captain.

Bayern are reportedly considering several striking options for the future, including Gyokeres, Benjamin Sesko, Omar Marmoush, and Lois Openda. However, they seem to be in no rush to make an immediate signing, focusing instead on leveraging Kane’s form for the next couple of years. Instead, they might prefer to wait until Gyokeres’ contract nears its end to secure him at a lower price.

There is little doubt that Gyokeres is poised to become one of the most talked-about names in the 2025 summer transfer window. While Bayern admire the Swedish forward’s potential, United’s immediate needs, coupled with Ruben Amorim’s influence, could see them beat their German counterparts to the signing. For now, the striker must keep banging in the goals at Sporting to sustain the interest of the European giants.
