Boland makes his return count to lift Victoria in finals race

Scott Boland returned from New Zealand to help Victoria claim an early advantage in their must-win Sheffield Shield clash with Western Australia. The 34-year-old was an invaluable inclusion for Victoria after being released from Australia’s Test squad having been deemed surplus to requirements for the 2-0 series victory over New Zealand.Related

Boland toiled away in hot conditions on Monday to take 4 for 41, helping bowl WA out for 244 after Victoria captain Will Sutherland won the toss and sent the visitors in to bat at the Junction Oval in Melbourne.Sutherland’s decision was looking questionable when WA moved to 203 for 4. But Boland, Fergus O’Neill (3-48) and spinner Todd Murphy (2-54) helped trigger a collapse of 6 for 41.”I would have liked to have stayed over in New Zealand if I was playing, but there was an opportunity to play back here,” Boland said. “I’ve spent so much time carrying the drinks this year so it’s been nice to be back on the field. Credit to our whole bowling group, we stuck to our plans that we wanted to implement to their batters.”Most of the WA top-order got starts, but Jayden Goodwin finished top scorer with 43. Aaron Hardie and Hilton Cartwright battled hard during their knocks but could never settleVictoria had to face five overs before stumps, losing in-form opener Nic Maddinson to Cameron Gannon for 2.Former Test batter Peter Handscomb is due to come in at No. 5 in his 100th Shield match.Dual reigning champions, WA need to avoid losing to be assured of reaching a third successive decider. Sitting second on the table, the visitors can still make the final with a draw. But Victoria – one place lower on the ladder – will be pushing hard to force a result after losing the last two finals against WA.Tasmania, who last won a Shield title in 2012-13, are in the box seat to host the final after losing just once this season.

Bid submitted: Leicester make offer worth up to £17m to sign new attacker

Leicester City have reportedly submitted an offer for an attacking player who's a "pleasure to watch", with his current club seemingly providing a response for the Foxes.

Leicester transfer news

The Foxes continue to be linked with new signings in the final days of the summer transfer window, allowing Steve Cooper to build a squad capable of sealing Premier League survival this season.

Reiss Nelson is one such figure who has emerged as a reported option for Leicester, with the 24-year-old not seen as a key player at Arsenal, with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli, Leandro Trossard and others ahead of him in the pecking order. He could be viewed as an alternative to Wilfried Zaha, for whom a move to the King Power Stadium has been mooted.

In fact, a recent update suggested that the Foxes are leading the race to sign the former Crystal Palace winger, who is now playing for Galatasaray but appears to be pushing for a late move away from the Turkish giants this summer.

Attacking midfield could be an area of the pitch that Cooper looks to strengthen in ahead of deadline day, too, and it looks as though they have pushed forward in their efforts to sign one individual.

Leicester City table offer for 20-year-old

According to journalist Bob Faesen on X, Leicester have submitted an offer to Genk for Bilal El Khannouss, with a €15-20m (£12.7m-£17m) bid likely to be rejected amid further negotiations:

"UPDATE: Leicester have made their opening bid for El Khannouss. It was between 15-20 million euros and therefore too little for RC Genk. Negotiations at club level have now started."

This is an encouraging update for Foxes supporters, who will no doubt be hoping to see further new faces arrive at the King Power in the coming days.

El Khannouss is a talented young player who would come in as a long-term acquisition, and the fact that Manchester City have been linked with a move for him in the past says a huge amount about the ability that he possesses. Genk's technical director Dimitri De Conde lauded the young attacking midfielder back in 2022 as well, too, saying of him: "Bilal is a pleasure to watch and during my eight years at the club, I have rarely seen such a talent at KRC Genk."

The Genk ace has 14 assists in 94 appearances for his current club, showing that he can provide real creative quality from his attacking midfield role, and he has also already won 14 caps for Morocco at such a young age, and he appeared once at the 2022 World Cup when he was still 18.

Imagine him & Vardy: Leicester can forget Zaha with move for "special" ace

Leicester City could welcome this new face in through the door soon.

ByKelan Sarson Aug 25, 2024

Admittedly, El Khannouss can't be expected to go straight in and star from the off for Leicester, with time possibly needed to adjust to the pace and power of the Premier League, but he could be a great squad option, growing into a key man over time.

Real Madrid, beware: Awesome Atalanta emerging as serious Champions League contenders with Gian Piero Gasperini continuing to work miracles

The titleholders are in danger of suffering an embarrassingly early elimination so the last thing they need right now is a trip to Bergamo

When the full-time whistle blew in Bergamo on Friday night, Atalanta's fans couldn't contain themselves. "We're going to win the league!" rang out around the Gewiss Stadium. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini had always insisted that such a beautiful dream would be impossible to realise, even for the game's greatest over-achievers, so it felt significant that he didn't even attempt to lower the supporters' expectations when he spoke to the media after the 2-1 win over AC Milan that put his side top of the Serie A table.

"We've never been top of the table after 15 games, so let them sing!" an unusually ebullient Gasperini told . "The people of Bergamo have their feet firmly on the ground. They don't take anything for granted. But they have had decades of struggle, so let them enjoy it! It's an expression of joy, and a deserved one too."

There's no doubt about that; Bergamo has been through a lot over the years but Atalanta under Gasperini have become the city's ultimate source of pride – and hope – in recent seasons. In that sense, last May's stunning Europa League final triumph felt like the fittingly glorious end of an incredible journey; Atalanta had finally got their hands on the trophy that Gasperini and everyone connected with the best-run club in football had long merited.

And yet La Dea clearly isn’t done yet. On the contrary, Gasperini, who was tipped to join Napoli during the summer, might just be in possession of his strongest side yet, with Atalanta arguably the favourites going into Tuesday night's historic Champions League clash with Real Madrid.

"I wouldn't say that!" Gasperini said smiling on Friday night, "That's subjective." It doesn't mean it's not true, though, because there's one team going into the game on top form – and it's not Madrid…

AFPA big club with a small budget

While Gasperini was talking excitedly about a Serie A title challenge and facing Madrid in the Champions League, his Milan counterpart Paulo Fonseca was whining about the officials.

It's not unusual, of course, for under-pressure coaches to come off sounding like conspiracy theorists but Fonseca made it sound as if Milan were a small club and Atalanta a traditional Serie A superpower receiving preferential treatment from referees.

It was a ludicrous insinuation but it perfectly illustrated how the Bergamaschi have put an awful lot of noses out of joint in Italy. Atalanta are the team that so often make so many of Serie A's elite look bad.

They have just the eight-highest wage bill in the league (€59 million) and yet currently top the table by two points from Napoli (€83m), with Inter a point further back in third (€142m), Juventus all the way down in sixth (€112m) and Milan doing even worse in seventh (€104m).

In that sense, Atalanta have miraculously managed to become a big club on a small budget. "The fans now feel like fans of a top team," former captain Papu Gomez told the , "so they want to fight for the top spots."

AdvertisementGetty Images SportCoping without Koopmeiners & Scamacca

Atalanta's ascent to the summit of the standings is made all the more remarkable for the fact that they suffered two serious setbacks in August.

Star striker Gianluca Scamacca ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee before the season had even got under way, while influential midfielder Teun Koopmeiners finally managed to force through a €55m (£46m/$58m) transfer to Juventus with just three days of the summer transfer window remaining.

However, Atalanta have long been masters of the market, while Gasperini is arguably without equal when it comes to continually coping with the loss of key players.

Perhaps we shouldn't have been at all surprised, then, to see Mateo Retegui prove himself an incredible replacement for Scamacca, with the €28m (£23m/$30m) signing from Genoa presently leading the Capocannoniere standings with 12 goals in just 14 games.

Furthermore, Koopmeiners, who has underwhelmed in Turin (it's no coincidence that lot of players that excel under Gasperini are never quite as effective elsewhere), hasn't been missed at all due to the collective effort of Marten de Roon, Mario Pasalic and the outstanding Ederson.

Getty Images SportGasperini's most important players

It's certainly easy to understand why Ederson has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City in recent months. There are few better defensive midfielders in the game right now and he is, as Gomez says, "the fundamental lynchpin of Gasperini's team".

In attack, Ademola Lookman has also been attracting admiring glances from the Premier League for some time now and the fear was that the Nigeria international would depart during the summer.

He was certainly keen to move after his historic hat-trick against Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League final in Dublin but we've not seen any hint of disappointment in Lookman's play this term. His late winner against Milan was his 10th goal of the season so far, while he's also weighed in with five assists.

"I don’t know how you can stop him sometimes," Arrigo Sacchi told the last week. "He moves like a rocket and has a precise and powerful shot."

Charles De Ketelaere has arguably been Atalanta's revelation of 2024. The Belgian is one of only three players to have both scored and created 15 or more goals since the turn of the year, alongside Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer – which is just remarkable when one considers how badly De Ketelaere struggled during his solitary season at AC Milan.

However, he's become a completely different player – and character – under Gasperini, which was perfectly illustrated by the way in which he headed home the opener against the Rossoneri on Friday night by completely bullying Theo Hernandez in the box to get on the end of De Roon's cross.

However, it feels a little wrong to pick out individuals when Atalanta's success is very much a team effort, with every single player playing their part in a record-equalling run of nine consecutive Serie A victories, and a 14-game undefeated streak in all competitions that stretches back to September 24.

"Atalanta are a team and a club that should be held up as an example throughout Europe," Sacchi told the . "The group has been working with Gasperini for many years and knows his lessons by heart.

"When I look at it at the moment, I can't find any real weak points in Atalanta: Gasperini's tactical ideas, the man-marking all over the pitch, the exceptional athletic preparation, and the excellent choices in the build-up phase all stand out.

"Every time they find themselves faced with an obstacle, they show that they already have the solution ready. And this is thanks to the coach who has given his players a wealth of high-level knowledge."

Crucially, though, Gasperini also has a squad of greater depth than ever before.

Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing £12 million ace alongside Solanke

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham are eyeing a £12 million player alongside their pursuit of Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

Spurs pursuing move for Dominic Solanke and other strikers

Manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed last week that Spurs are actively looking to sign a striker as a priority before deadline day, so it appears a new number nine is certainly one to watch in the coming weeks.

Tottenham predict late exit as £134,000-per-week star holds talks to leave

He could be yet another name out of the door at Spurs.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 8, 2024

Postecoglou was heavily reliant on both Son Heung-min and Richarlison for the majority of Spurs' goal tally last season, with the duo scoring 29 between them in all competitions, but Postecoglou doesn't want a repeat of that for the 2024/2025 season – explaining how he would've certainly utilised Harry Kane if he hadn't decided to join Bayern Munich.

"If Harry would have stayed I definitely would have used him!," said Postecoglou on Tottenham's plans to sign a new striker.

"So I think for us what's more important is the type of striker we get. You know we play a certain way. We demand certain things from a physical perspective from the technical aspects of it that it's going be a striker that fits that mould.

"It's still the area of the park we're really probably the thinnest when I talk about squad-wise at the moment, so obviously that's a focus for us.

"Irrespective of the approach, I like to think I've always been pretty clear on what I want. I've had success for the most part of my career with transfers and, I mean, I thought last year's window was excellent."

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham are in talks over signing Solanke from Bournemouth, and Spurs are pushing to seal a deal for the Englishman who scored 21 goals in all competitions for the Cherries last term.

However, he is by no means the only forward target on their radar, as fellow reliable reporter Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport backs that Tottenham have a concrete interest in signing Brentford's Ivan Toney as well.

While bringing in a striker is a top priority, Spurs also may need to sign another right-back, with Emerson Royal thought to be closing in on a move to AC Milan.

Tottenham also thinking about signing Issa Kabore from Man City

Speaking to GiveMeSport, amid their high-profile chase for Solanke, Romano says that Tottenham are considering a move for Issa Kabore – who would come in to replace Emerson if the Brazilian does, at long last, seal his San Siro move.

“Tottenham would look to fill the gap, for sure, because they have Pedro Porro, but they would need one more player," said Romano.

“It's true that Kabore at Manchester City, former Luton Town player, is appreciated by Tottenham. But I’m told he is not the only option. So there are several possibilities being considered."

The Burkina Faso international spent last season on loan at Kenilworth Road, making 24 Premier League appearances, with City believed to value Kabore at around £12 million. Ex-Marseille boss Igor Tudor also branded Kabore a "top athlete" when the pair worked together in Ligue 1.

South African sports minister warns CSA of 'defunding' and 'derecognising'

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is on the verge of being stripped of its status as the game’s official cricketing body, as the Sports Minister prepares to intervene in the ongoing crisis – potentially as soon as next week – by “defunding” and “derecognising” the body. Such a move, which the minister Nathi Mthethwa warned of in a letter to the interim board and Members’ Council, will have seismic implications for the game in the country, not least for the immediate futures of the national teams. In the four-page letter, Mthethwa outlined his reasons for acting, and concluded: “In the circumstances, I have decided to invoke my powers under the Act [which allows ministerial intervention in a sporting body] and I hereby notify you that I have done so…. by de-funding and de-recognising CSA, and I will cause this to be published in the Government Gazette in due course at the earliest opportunity.”There is some wriggle room in the publishing of such an order in the Gazette. Government Gazettes are published every Friday, which effectively gives the Members’ Council one week in which to agree to the sticking point in this crisis – the new memorandum of incorporation which will include the framework for a majority independent board. The interim board called it a “sad day” for the country, and specifically for its cricketers. It also made it clear that it was down to the Members’ Council to salvage the situation. Forewarning the impact of such an act, the interim board chairperson Stavros Nicolau said in a press conference on Thursday, “We are in a situation where a minister is in a position to trigger measures he has and powers he has at his disposal in term of the Act. The consequences of those would be dire for cricket – financial, economic, developmental and sporting consequences. It would plunge cricket into crisis.”The basis of the ongoing disruption lies in the reluctance of the Members’ Council to agree to a majority independent board ,even though it had done so as far back as 2012 in the aftermath of that year’s bonus scandal – ostensibly because they want cricket to be run only by people involved in cricket structures, rather than by business people from the outside. CSA have been embroiled in administrative issues for the last 18 months and have rotated through three different acting CEOs following the suspension and subsequent dismissal of Thabang Moroe for misconduct. The interim board added in a statement: “It is deeply disappointing that a self-interested vocal minority voted against change while three members chose to abstain. These actions have now brought the game to its knees and will cause the greatest crisis since readmission.”Related

The men’s national team is not in action until June, when they are due to play in the West Indies in a series rescheduled from last year. The women’s team have no major assignments until the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup next year. It is unlikely any such act will have an immediate impact on South Africa’s players currently taking part in the IPL.Mtethwa also wrote that the ICC will be informed “of my decision and provide them with my reasons for doing so”.That will likely open up a new phase of involvement from the global governing body who, so far, have observed the situation rather than take any direct action. Government intervention in running cricket has usually drawn sanction from the ICC but, with such prominent members, it has not always been so straightforward. In a statement reported earlier this week, the ICC said it “encourages Members to work with governments to resolve issues. Not all government intervention is problematic and for the ICC to get involved it requires a formal complaint from our Members that it is unwanted. Should that happen we will evaluate the situation based on the facts provided and plan an appropriate course of action.”

Imagine him & Gnonto: Leeds in the race to sign "exciting" star

Leeds United have made four signings to bolster their squad during the summer transfer window, which closes at the end of this month, so far.

Alex Cairns, Jayden Bogle, Joe Rodon, and Joe Rothwell have all been brought in to improve Daniel Farke's options across the pitch for this season.

Meanwhile, Charlie Cresswell, Glen Kamara, Crysencio Summerville, and Archie Gray have all been sold by the Whites ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

There is still plenty of work for Leeds to do in the transfer market before the end of August and they reportedly have their sights set on a Premier League defender.

Leeds eyeing up Spanish talent

According to The Athletic, the Whites are in the race to land Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Hugo Bueno on a season-long loan deal.

The report claims that they could face competition from Dutch giants Feyenoord and Scottish Premiership champions Celtic, who are also keen on a loan for the Spaniard.

It states, however, that Wolves currently see the full-back as being an important part of their plans and they are not prepared to send him out on loan yet.

The outlet also reveals that the West Yorkshire outfit are a difficult team for Premier League sides to do loans with, as they do not offer guarantees on game time – as other clubs in the EFL do.

If the situation changes and Leeds are able to get a deal over the line for the Spain U21 international before the end of the window then they could land an exciting partner for Wilfried Gnonto down the left flank.

Exciting left flank for Leeds

Firstly, Bueno could come in to provide Junior Firpo with competition for his place in the team, whilst also being an alternative option for Farke to call upon when required.

When the Wolves loanee is needed, if they sign him, he could use his progressive play in possession to provide Gnonto, who could move to the left in the absence of Crysencio Summerville, with plenty of opportunities to make things happen in the final third.

In the 2023/24 Premier League season, the £10k-per-week star ranked within the top 24% of full-backs in the division for progressive carries per 90 (2.67) and the top 22% for successful take-ons per 90 (0.97).

This shows that he can get the ball up the pitch on a regular basis by taking on opposition defenders and carrying it forward, which could then allow Gnonto to make runs off the ball rather than being the one tasked with progressing the ball.

As you can see in the table above, Bueno also has the potential to provide a creative outlet down the left side if Farke can help him to unlock his academy form at first-team level.

The 21-year-old ace, who Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs hailed as "exciting", could supply Gnonto with chances to score, which would allow the winger to thrive.

In the Championship last term, the Italian whiz scored eight goals from 5.36 xG, which speaks to his impressive finishing quality, and he could form an exciting relationship with Bueno, due to his creative and progressive qualities at left-back.

Better than Berge: Man Utd could sign Casemiro upgrade who’s like Pogba

Manchester United’s 2024/25 Premier League season kicked off on Friday night with a 1-0 victory over Fulham at Old Trafford. It was the curtain-raiser for the English top-flight campaign, with Old Trafford arguably the perfect venue to get another exciting season underway.

A debut goal from new signing Joshua Zirkzee gave the Red Devils all three points against the Cottagers, with the Dutchman capping off a well-worked move to introduce himself to the United faithful in the perfect way. It wasn’t all plain sailing for Erik ten Hag’s side, who had to cope with dangerous Fulham counter-attacks, but they rode those waves well and came out with three points.

Unsurprisingly, given the fact Friday night’s affair was the first game of the season, both sides looked tired as the minutes ticked by. In particular, United made some substitutions in midfield to freshen things up in the middle of the park to help cope with Fulham in transition.

United lacked midfield options off the bench, with Scott McTominay making an appearance and Christian Eriksen an unused substitute. Youngster Toby Collyer was also on the bench but did not feature.

It is no secret the Red Devils are looking to strengthen in the centre of the park before deadline day on 30th August to add depth and more quality in midfield. They have recently been linked with one player who could prove to be an excellent option to do just that.

Man United target Bundesliga midfielder

The player in question here is Borussia Monchengladbach and France midfielder Manu Kone. The 23-year-old has impressed during recent seasons for the German outfit and could well leave the club this summer, with some clubs circling.

According to a recent report from Graeme Bailey, Kone is one of the names on an extensive midfield list for United as they look to add depth in the centre of the park. The midfielder has 'been discussed internally' by the United hierarchy.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone.

However, they are not alone in their bid to acquire the 23-year-old’s services this summer, as Italian giants Juventus and Milan are also thought to be interested in the Frenchman. As confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, the Rossoneri are set to complete a deal for French midfielder Youssouf Fofana in the coming days, meaning United could have an edge over the seven-time Champions League winners.

In terms of a price for the midfielder, Bailey reports that a deal for the Monchengladbach midfielder could cost less than £30m to get over the line.

Why Kone would be a good signing

Kone was an important cog in the Monchengladbach system last season. He featured 22 times in the top flight, chipping in with one goal and two assists. However, the Frenchman did struggle with injuries at times and had two notable spells on the sidelines last campaign.

The 23-year-old could prove to be a brilliant alternative to Sander Berge, who has also been linked with United this summer. The Red Devils are believed to have pursued a deal for the Burnley and Norway midfielder in a deal that could cost them £30m.

Sander Berge for Burnley

Not only that but former Toulouse man Kone could be an exciting upgrade on United’s No 18, Casemiro. Despite a good showing against Fulham on Friday, the Brazilian struggled last campaign, to the point that Jamie Carragher suggested the vastly experienced midfielder 'needs to call it a day at this level and move' during the transfer window, although that is yet to happen, despite reports.

Should United end up moving Casemiro on, they will need to bring in a replacement, and Kone – who has been compared to Paul Pogba – could prove to be the better option ahead of Berge. The Frenchman is of a similar profile to the United midfielder. That is to say, he is a tough-tackling ball-winner and could be a more like-for-like replacement than if they signed Berge.

Manchester United player Casemiro

In fact, this is also backed up by the stats on analysis site FBref. On average, the 23-year-old midfielder completes 3.47 tackles and interceptions per 90 minutes. That is more than Berge, with the Burnley man averaging just 2.96, although Casemiro trumps them both, with an impressive 4.59 per 90.

When breaking that statistic down further, it is worth noting that the Gladbach man finishes far ahead of the other two on interceptions. He makes 0.87 interceptions per 90, with Casemiro ranking second at 0.82, and Berge last with just 0.69.

Interestingly, Kone wins more ball recoveries on average than Berge and Casemiro, showing his mobility and dynamism off the ball. The French midfielder makes an average of 6.42 each game, with the Burnley midfielder and United's Brazilian midfielder both averaging 6.05.

In terms of their in-possession quality, it is once again very close. Casemiro averages the most progressive passes with 5.09, while Berge comes in at a close second with 4.91. The Monchengladbach number 17 does rank last, although his numbers are not exactly poor, averaging 4.05 per game.

Kone also averages more completed take-ons per 90 than the duo. He boasts an impressive 65.4% success rate, completing 2.14 per game. Casemiro comes in second, completing 0.41 (50% completion) and Berge is third on the list, averaging 0.6 (48.8% completion).

Whilst Casemiro and Berge perhaps excel at some areas of the game more than Kone, the Monchengladbach midfielder brings balance between the two. In signing the Frenchman, United could bring in someone who possesses the best aspects of their current number 18 and former Sheffield United midfielder Berge. He could be a dream upgrade to Casemiro, by keeping a similar profile within the squad while having someone better at carrying the ball, and someone who can last the full 90 minutes more regularly.

Should United get this deal over the line for up to £30m, it could be a superb piece of business, bringing in an "exceptional" midfielder, as football scout Antonio Mango has described him in the past. It could well be money well spent on a well-rounded No 6 who could help revolutionise the United midfield as Ten Hag looks to challenge for further honours this season and push for a top-four finish.
