Another new position for Weston McKennie? USMNT star puts in strong shift at left-back to help Juventus out of recent struggles in Coppa Italia win over Cagliari

Weston McKennie played a part in Juventus' return to winning form, and he did so at an unusual position

Juve crush Cagliari 4-0back to winning waysMcKennie stars as left backFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱Getty Images SportWHAT HAPPENED?

U.S. men's national team star Weston McKennie started in a new position for Juventus and helped his team advance past the Coppa Italia Round of 16 on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Cagliari in Turin.

Juventus had won just one contest in December, a shock result over struggling Manchester City on Dec. 11 in the Champions League. Outside of that victory, the club had drawn five of its last seven matches – a streak that extended to November.

McKennie went all 90 minutes as Juve's left back, a position he hasn't played in his five seasons at the club. In the game's final stages, McKennie was joined by USMNT teammate Tim Weah, who took his place in the attack for the game's final 10 minutes or so.

Juventus opened the scoring just before halftime, with star striker Dusan Vlahovic firing home a pass from rising winger Kenan Yildiz. The Serbian could have had two more on his record, too, but saw two goals called back for offside in the second half.

It did not matter, though, as Juve did get their insurance goals. One came from Teun Koopmeiners, whose stunning free-kick was all the insurance the hosts would need to leave with a win that had been a long time coming. Juve did add two more for good measure, though, as youngster Francisco Conceicao scored to make it 3-0 in the 80th minute before Nico Gonzalez tacked on a fourth a few minutes later.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportTHE BIGGER PICTURE

McKennie surely played his part in ending Juventus' recent struggles and was largely solid at that left-back position. He wasn't a pure fullback in many ways, as he did cut into the midfield often throughout the match. Wherever he was, though, he was effective, as he created three chances while completing all but four of his passes. McKennie was physical, too, committing four fouls while avoiding a booking.

Getty Images SportDID YOU KNOW?

While it is McKennie's first appearance as left back for Juventus, he has played out wide for the club throughout his time there. He started last season as Weah's backup at right-wingback, but played several times in the role once Weah was injured. He then reclaimed his role in central midfield as the Serie A campaign wore on.

Having built a little bit of momentum, Juve will now look to bring that to Serie A this weekend when they take on 19th-placed Monza. Due to the club's inconsistent form, the club now sits sixth in the league and will need to collect points if it is to rise up the table and into the title race.

In terms of the Coppa Italia, Juve will now look ahead to a meeting with Empoli in the quarterfinals.

Nicholson not stopping: Celtic make late £5m bid to sign another new player

Celtic have now made a bid for another new player as the Hoops attempt to make a plethora of signings before Friday’s deadline.

Celtic transfer rumours

Brendan Rodgers’ side have made a perfect start to the Scottish Premiership campaign but have now lost star midfielder Matt O’Riley, who joined Brighton & Hove Albion in a record Scottish exit. Therefore, money should be there for Celtic to reinvest, and that is something what Rodgers wants to happen, recently saying:

“We can't be happy just to make our money and build our pot because the bottom line is on the pitch. That's the bottom line. The supporters, they pay the money. I look back to the Covid times here, the Celtic supporters sold the stadium out and they weren't allowed in it.

Alongside Engels: Celtic can ease O'Riley blow by signing "remarkable" gem

The Hoops have been linked with an interest in the young attacker this month.

ByDan Emery Aug 27, 2024

“So we have the duty to put the best team on the pitch. That's what we'll do and look to do. It's taken a bit longer than I would have liked. But if we can do it by Friday, strengthen the squad, we'll be in a really, really good place.

“The team is in a good place, mentally, tactically, how they're playing. But we want to strengthen and have that depth. It's taken a lot longer than I would have liked as the football manager. That's my brutally honest answer on it. But I will repeat this. If we get them in, then there's still a long season ahead. So it's important that we do get that. And I have belief that we will do.”

Bids have been going in for a number of players, including FC Augsburg midfielder Arne Engels, Los Angeles FC midfielder Mateusz Bogusz and Lazio winger Gustav Isaksen as the club look to make up for the void left by O’Riley.

Chief executive Michael Nicholson and those behind the scenes at Parkhead are showing no signs of stopping, though, with an update emerging of another bid for a defender.

Celtic make £5m bid for Auston Trusty

According to reliable reporter Scott Burns of The Daily Record, Celtic have also submitted a £5m offer to sign Sheffield United defender Auston Trusty.

Called “incredible” by former teammate George Friend, Trusty has been linked with a move to Parkhead in recent weeks and the Hoops have now made their move.

Burns claims that the Blades are reluctant to sell with Trusty under contract until 2027 but Celtic are pushing to make a transfer happen for the 26-year-old, who can turn out as a centre-back or as a left-back.

The USA international made the move to Bramall Lane from Arsenal just last year and made 34 appearances in all competitions, the majority of which came in the Premier League. He’s continued to feature this season under Chris Wilder, but by the looks of things, a move to Scotland could soon be on the cards.

Internal talks: Arsenal weigh up £34m D-day signing as Sterling upgrade

Arsenal are poised to battle it out for the Premier League title once again, and while Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino have been signed, the frontline needs some work before the day is done.

Emile Smith Rowe has joined Fulham while Eddie Nketiah is closing on a £30m transfer to Crystal Palace; Fabio Vieira has also re-joined Porto on loan. Mikel Arteta boasts one of the most talented teams in Europe, but surely some added depth is needed to fire across all cylinders over the coming campaign.

Arsenal transfer news

As per ESPN, Arsenal are holding internal talks over whether to strengthen their frontline before the transfer deadline this evening, with Chelsea's Raheem Sterling offered Arteta's way.

The England international, as Fabrizio Romano also reports, is at the core of late-stage discussions in north London to determine a possible transfer, but with Manchester United also interested, Arsenal are also weighing up an alternative option.

However, Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is also an option and could be the perfect alternative, with the German giants hoping to collect a €40m (£34m) fee for the 28-year-old.

Why Arsenal should sign Kingsley Coman

Coman has led a storied career, draped in hordes of silverware, and while he has a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League, he might feel that he wishes to try his foot in the Premier League.

Bayern wish to get the versatile winger off the wage bill but that certainly does not mean that he is past his sell-by date, carrying athletic and creative properties that could see him thrive among Arteta's squad.

And while his injury record leaves something to be desired, Coman would not be expected to shoulder a hefty workload, for Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and co all compete for starring spots in the Gunners' starting team.

Sterling might be a decorated Premier League icon, but the 29-year-old has not been brilliant since transferring to Chelsea for £47.5m two years ago, scoring just 19 goals and adding 12 assists across 81 matches. It's not a bad haul but still a regression from his Manchester City days.

His underlying metrics are also not the best, with Coman outperforming him across a sweep of ball-playing and ball-carrying statistics, which suggests that Arteta's dynamic project might find better use of the Frenchman's qualities.

As the statistical analysis shows, Coman has outstripped Sterling across every aspect, highlighting the gains that could be found from adding him to the Arsenal accord.

His former coach Patrick Gonfalone has even said: “His reading of the game and his technique stand out and make him formidable." Such traits would go down a treat at the Emirates.

Arteta, having parted with several stars, will need to sign someone before the transfer window concludes, ensuring that the frontline is in a fitting condition to charge across multiple fronts this year.

Todd Boehly's 13 worst signings at Chelsea (ranked)

Chelsea have become something of a laughing stock over the last few years, with their approach to transfers bordering on farce, having spent hundreds of millions of pounds and been through several managers in the short period since Todd Boehly’s consortium took over.

Their unrivalled extravagance in the transfer market has not been matched with success on the pitch, with the vast majority of the circa-£1bn spent in that time set to go down the proverbial drain. Put simply, there have been far more misses than hits.

Enzo Maresca – the third permanent manager to be appointed during the Boehly/Clearlake era – was allowed to continue a spending spree at Stamford Bridge. While most of his signings may not yet be able to claim to be among the worst arrivals in recent times, the odds are hardly in their favour given the current hierarchy’s poor success rate when it comes to buying players.

With that in mind, we have come up with a list of Chelsea’s worst post-Roman Abramovich deals so far. For this list, we’ve considered players’ performances, the fee they were bought for, and the amount of sense a deal made – whether from a financial or sporting point of view. Of course, this is all subject to change…

All confirmed Premier League done deals: summer transfer window 2024

Find every incoming and outgoing for each 2024/25 Premier League club here.

ByStephan Georgiou Sep 18, 2024 13 Robert Sanchez £25m from Brighton, 2023

After selling Edouard Mendy to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli, Chelsea were in need of a new No 1. Their decision to replace the Senegalese shot-stopper with Spaniard Sanchez was not necessarily a bad one given its necessity, but few could argue that it has worked out for the best.

Sanchez wasn’t even assured of his starting place heading into the new season, though he was named in Chelsea’s opening-day defeat to Manchester City in Enzo Maresca’s first game in charge.

He has failed to make the No 1 position his own despite his apparent lack of top-quality competition, though given the errors he has made, it could be considered that is more down to the player rather than the backroom team.

That said, allowing Kepa Arrizabalaga to move on in the same summer hardly seemed wise, while the fact two more goalkeepers have been signed since points to a total lack of direction.

12 Omari Kellyman £19m from Aston Villa, 2024

Aston Villa forward Omari Kellyman.

Of course, there is no blame attached to Kellyman himself here. A cynic could even say the owners were genuinely acting in the club’s best interests by signing the Aston Villa youngster for £19m in order to bypass concerns over the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

But of course, the very fact that Chelsea were in any sort of PSR predicament will have been directly down to their spending habits.

And given the vast sums of money spent over the last few years (not limited to the players on this list, nor even the Boehly regime – remember Lukaku?), Kellyman’s pricey arrival is a damning indictment not only on modern football but Chelsea’s financial mismanagements.

Financial Fair Play: What is PSR, how does it work and who's in trouble?

Leicester City have become the latest club charged with an alleged PSR breach, but what could happen next?

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024 11 Wesley Fofana £70m from Leicester, 2022

Another one where you couldn’t squarely place the blame on the ownership, but Wesley Fofana’s Chelsea career has been an unmitigated disaster.

We’ll give the owners the benefit of the doubt, but they certainly haven’t had the best of luck, with Fofana making just 20 appearances before the start of this season, having missed the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.

While Fofana’s luckless injury record is far from the owners’ fault, his transfer has still been a colossal waste of money thus far. But with the Frenchman not turning 24 until December, there is plenty of time to turn things around.

10 Malo Gusto £30.7m from Lyon, 2023

Malo Gusto is one of several Chelsea arrivals who have yet to reach their potential. Given he’s only 21, there is plenty of time for the Frenchman to become a true superstar and render his £30.7m transfer fee a bargain, but the decision-making process is what makes this move a bold one.

Nine assists in all competitions demonstrate a creative side from the full-back, though his ill-discipline was also on show, collecting seven yellows and a red in his only full season to date.

He has also been thrust into first-team action amid Reece James’ injury struggles, though the fingers can again be pointed at the ownership here – was spending so much on an understudy to one of the Blues’ best players (when fit) the best plan at a time he desperately needs games?

James’ fitness concerns have instead turned out to be a blessing for Gusto’s career, so here’s hoping he can make the most of his opportunity in the new campaign (sparing Boehly’s blushes in the process).

9 Axel Disasi £38.5m from Monaco, 2023

Despite scoring on debut against Liverpool last season, Axel Disasi can hardly claim to be the rock at the back Chelsea need – particularly amid the exit of Thiago Silva in the summer.

It would be harsh to pin the brunt of the blame at the centre-back’s door – he has shone on occasion – but for such an outlay on a defender who will be one of the more experienced heads in the Chelsea squad at 26, it could be argued that the Blues are yet to see a return on that hefty fee (which is no fault of the player’s, of course).

He was a trusted member of the squad under Mauricio Pochettino – he played 44 times in all competitions – but was nevertheless part of the worst defence in last season’s top eight.

One could argue that Pochettino’s exit and the likes of Trevoh Chalobah being banished from the first team – both decisions from up top – risk undoing Disasi’s progression to this point and putting too much pressure on him to come good for a team that is lacking in cohesion amid all the changes at Stamford Bridge.

8 Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £10.3m from Barcelona, 2022

pierre-emerick-aubameyang-chelsea-premier-league

Given the aimless spending since their takeover, one of the more left-field signings from Chelsea was that of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Having previously left rivals Arsenal under a cloud after losing the captaincy there, the Gabon striker signed from Barcelona, where he seemed to rediscover his scoring touch.

However, that appeared to vanish once he returned to London. While hardly an obscene waste of money, it was most certainly a waste of time; a return of 3 goals in 22 games would hardly have been what Boehly and co were after.

But again, the owners aren’t completely blameless. They fired Thomas Tuchel just five days after signing Aubameyang, with successor Graham Potter limiting him to cameo showings off the bench as Auba’s Premier League comeback fell flat.

Ranking Chelsea's worst Premier League managers by win percentage

Mauricio Pochettino’s late-season revival was too little, too late for Chelsea…

ByAlex Roberts May 21, 2024 7 Raheem Sterling £50m from Man City, 2022

Handing a league rival £50m isn’t common – in fact, Chelsea were the first to do it in 2011 – but in this case, Manchester City were surely laughing all the way to the bank.

Raheem Sterling had not long been the star of England’s Euro 2020 campaign, but he had seen his chances at City dwindle despite their successes, with the arrival of Jack Grealish providing a strong challenge to his starting position.

Perhaps few could begrudge Chelsea for jumping on the opportunity of bringing Sterling to Stamford Bridge, but with plenty of iffy transfer market decisions being made, the Blues really could have done with a hit here.

Instead, Sterling has failed to assert himself at Chelsea, and is now on the way out following Enzo Maresca’s arrival. It will end a rather pitiful period for the winger, who notched 14 times in the Premier League in two seasons – just one more than in his final City campaign.

6 Enzo Fernandez £107m from Benfica, 2023

It’s the golden rule of a transfer window: never buy anyone purely off the back of a World Cup. But in early 2023, that’s exactly what Chelsea’s so-called transfer experts appeared to do when signing 21-year-old Enzo Fernandez, not to mention for a then-British record of £107m.

Clearlake’s penchant for long-term investments has arguably not been epitomised more than in the arrival of the Argentinian, who has failed to set Stamford Bridge alight since his nine-figure switch.

Despite this, he has featured heavily in a rare show of stability, if not a show of talent. For over £100m, one would surely expect Fernandez to be in the running for the Young Player of the Year award as a prime up-and-coming talent, but Chelsea’s only representative in that regard has been a City academy product bought for less than half that price.

For a club seemingly out of control when it comes to finances, they’re not even close to at least getting some success to justify their outlays.

Every winner of the PFA Young Player of the Year award since 2000

Cole Palmer has deservedly taken home the 2023/24 Young Player of the Year award – following in the footsteps of several Premier League stars.

ByLuke Randall Aug 20, 2024 5 Benoit Badiashile £35m from Monaco, 2023

Having been at Chelsea for 18 months, Benoit Badiashile ought to have a longer list of accomplishments than he can currently claim. The Frenchman arrived in January 2023 on a seven-and-a-half-year deal, but didn’t exactly hit the ground running.

His performances have been slated, while he has only featured invariably for Chelsea. Injuries have played a part in this, but their inflated squad could also be to blame – despite being bought by Graham Potter (or rather, during his tenure), the centre-back was left out of the Blues’ Champions League squad ahead of the knockout stages in 2022/23.

Having yet to deliver in Chelsea colours despite all his promise, he is pretty much a living encapsulation of what the club has become under the Boehly regime.

4 Joao Felix Loan and £45m from Atletico Madrid, 2023 & 2024

This is Boehly’s Chelsea doing Boehly’s Chelsea things. Loaning Joao Felix from Atletico Madrid in early 2023 was intriguing enough – not least after he managed to get himself sent off on his debut.

His comeback didn’t see him installed as a first-team regular, with little to speak of his brief time in blue before returning to the Spanish capital, where he continued to be unsettled as he was shipped off to Barcelona for a year. It was a brow-raising deal, to say the least.

Then, amid all the chaos of being seemingly desperate to offload one of their finer academy products in recent years (no, not Mason Mount), Chelsea rather inexplicably turned to a familiar face after failing to sign Samu Omorodion – a striker – in order to allow Conor Gallagher to leave.

Having apparently disrespected the youngster during contract negotiations, deals for him and Gallagher looked off, even forcing the midfielder to return to training at Cobham, where he was clearly no longer wanted.

Joao Felix – not a striker – recently secured a return to Stamford Bridge, almost purely to get Gallagher off the books. So now the Blues are a midfielder light, have spent over the odds (Atleti have netted a sizeable profit over these deals) and have a player who they know was previously underwhelming. Confused? Good – so are we.

Miserly, masterful Samit Patel leads Nottinghamshire to thumping win over Worcestershire

A miserly and masterful spell of bowling from Samit Patel has led Nottinghamshire to a thumping – even historic – victory over Worcestershire.Patel claimed three wickets for four runs from four overs to help Nottinghamshire extend their unbeaten run to five games and jump to the top of the North Group table. It was the most frugal four-over spell in the history of England’s domestic T20 competition. There were only two boundaries in the Worcestershire innings – the first of them from the 66th legitimate delivery – and their final total of 86 for 8 was the equal second-lowest in their T20 history. It took Nottinghamshire just 38 balls to overhaul their target and they did so without losing a wicket. The entire match was over in 114 minutes. It’s the second time in Nottinghamshire’s history that they have won a T20 match by 10 wickets (the previous one was against Middlesex in 2019) and the first time Worcestershire have been defeated by such a margin. Really, this was an execution more than a contest.Indeed, so one-sided was this encounter – again, let’s not call it a contest – that anyone in two minds over whether to attend due to the scheduling clash with England’s footballers need have had no concerns: it was over well before kick-off.You might think, to look at the scorecard of Worcestershire’s innings, that this was some sort of terror track. But it is not so. While there was a little spin for Patel and co. this was a second horrendous batting performance in succession from Worcestershire. Having lost seven wickets for 12 runs in 24 balls as they succumbed to a thumping 94-run loss against Yorkshire, they produced something even less impressive here. It was a chastening start for Ben Cox in his first game as captain in T20 cricket.Patel, in particular, harnessed that assistance expertly. Using his variations, his control and that touch of turn, he almost seemed to be toying with Worcestershire’s batters. He had Brett D’Oliveria taken at slip by the batter’s first delivery – the third ball of the match – and, in his next over, had Tom Fell stumped after turning one past him as he charged down the pitch and Riki Wessels slicing one to backward point. He followed it with a maiden (in the powerplay, for goodness sake) to leave Worcestershire reeling at 20 for 4 after the powerplay and returned later to complete his four-over spell by conceding just a single off the 17th over of the innings. You suspect, given his age (36) and shape (he is not slim, though he very rarely misses a game due to injury) that England will not look in his direction. But if the T20 World Cup is going to played in the UAE or India, a spinning allrounder of this much guile and experience wouldn’t seem such an absurd idea. There’s Samit in the way he moves, as George Harrison so nearly put it.It wasn’t just Patel responsible for Nottinghamshire’s success. Jake Ball, who claimed career-best figures of 3-17, and Luke Fletcher also bowled with impressive control and skill, with the former seemingly growing in pace and confidence by the performance and both men utilising the yorker with precision. While Jake Libby and Ross Whiteley added 46 in 8.1 overs for the fifth wicket, the damage inflicted in those opening overs was simply too deep. At 11 for 4 after four overs, this match was all but over.”It was a great night, obviously one of my better nights with the ball,” Patel, who took his 100th T20 wicket at Trent Bridge during the game, said afterwards. “I couldn’t have asked for a better start after a wicket with my second ball and it kind of just rolled from there.”But it was a real group effort with the ball and in the field, a great team performance. For them to get only two boundaries in 20 overs is almost unheard of.”Bangladesh’s Shakib al Hasan is the only other bowler to take 100 wickets at a single ground, having claimed 135 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, in Mirpur.Alex Hales and Joe Clarke soon put the pitch into perspective. At one stage, it looked as if they would complete victory within the powerplay with Hales – looking every inch an international cricketer – racing to 50 from just 18 deliveries. It took only seven balls for Nottinghamshire to match Worcestershire’s boundary count and Hales’ half-century contained nine fours, two sixes and just three singles.Worcestershire’s bowlers were always facing an uneven challenge, but there might be some concern about the punishment inflicted upon Ish Sodhi for the second game in succession. His second over cost an eye-watering 27 runs as Hales slow-swept when he went full, pulled him when he dropped short and cut him when he over-compensated. His fellow overseas player, Ben Dwarshuis, who conceded six fours in his two overs, fared little better. Alan Richardson, the Worcestershire assistant coach sent out to talk to the media in such circumstances admitted it was “a pretty horrific day at the office” and he wasn’t joking. This really was a brutal beating.Somewhat ominously, the North Group currently has the five international hosting grounds at the top of the table and the four who do not at the bottom. Nottinghamshire, at this stage at least unaffected by England call-ups, look the side to beat.

There could be some late activity before Friday’s deadline, too, with Lopetegui addressing the club’s plans last week: "In this time before the market closes, for everyone it's still not certain who might come and go.

"We have to adapt, but the competition is tough. We've tried to adapt with the new players, and we have to balance everything and try to be competitive.

"It's true that you have to keep competing in the market while working towards games. Once the market is closed I think the players are fully focused, but we have to adapt. For sure I would prefer the market to be closed before the start of the season."

One player who has been heavily linked with a move to West Ham is PSG midfielder Soler. The club have been locked in talks with the French giants, however, an alternative target appears to have been identified, with an offer going in for his services.

West Ham make bid for Richard Rios

According to reporter Pipe Sierra, relayed by The Boot Room, West Ham have made an offer of $22m (£16.6m) to sign Palmeiras midfielder Richard Rios. However, that bid has reportedly been turned down by Palmeiras, who don’t want to part ways with the player at this moment in time.

“Palmeiras rejected $22m (£16.6m) from West Ham for Richard Rios (24). The Brazilian team said they did not want to negotiate his departure. For now, there is no further progress from the London team.”

A Colombia international, Rios is primarily a central midfielder who can play in a deeper role or on the left, so would have given Lopetegui a versatile option in midfield.

Valued at a career-high €10m by Transfermarkt, Rios only joined Palmeiras last year and spent time with fellow Brazilian sides Flamengo and Guarani prior to that.

Also linked with Everton and Leicester City earlier this summer, it doesn’t look as if Rios, a "ball-carrying machine" as dubbed by Ben Mattinson, will be moving to England before the deadline.

Dele has had a difficult few years, with spells at Everton and Besiktas doing nothing to breathe life into his struggling career. The former England international will hope he return to his best and has even targeted a spot in the Three Lions 2026 World Cup squad.

Rangers hit gold on "monster" Gerrard signing who was sold for 9900% profit

Glasgow Rangers manager Philippe Clement will be hoping the signings he made during the summer transfer window at Ibrox can allow the club to generate substantial profits in the future.

Indeed, Rangers are looking to establish an effective player trading system which will see young talent signed, developed and then sold on for lavish fees.

This could fund future signings which may take the Glasgow club back to the summit of Scottish football.

While the Ibrox outfit have sold plenty of players over the last few years, only a few have generated significant profit for the club. One of the most notable examples is Glen Kamara.

How much Glen Kamara cost Rangers

During Steven Gerrard’s debut season in charge of Rangers, he knew that a strong midfield would give his side the perfect chance to end Celtic’s dominance.

This led to him agreeing a pre-contract move for Kamara, who was shining for Dundee at the time. Instead of waiting until the summer, however, Gerrard paid just £50k in order for the Finnish midfielder to link up early with the Gers.

It turned into one of the finest pieces of transfer business conducted by the club in recent years. Kamara went on to make nearly 200 appearances for the Light Blues, winning the Premiership and Scottish Cup, while also helping the Glaswegian outfit reach the Europa League final in 2022.

Gerrard even hailed him as a “monster” in 2019 upon his arrival, and it was clear the club would make a stunning profit on him in the future.

Last summer, Michael Beale sold the 28-year-old, hitting the jackpot on the player in the process…

Glen Kamara's transfer value in 2024

It soon became clear that the midfielder wasn’t going to be in Beale’s future plans as the summer transfer window rolled around last year.

Former Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

It took a few months, but eventually, he was sold to Leeds United, who paid a fee in the region of £5m to bring the player down to the English Championship, as the club sought to bolster their squad ahead of a promotion charge.

This meant the Ibrox side had sold Kamara for 9900% more than what they paid for just four and a half years earlier, a truly incredible return on their initial investment.

The 6-foot star played a solitary season for the Yorkshire side, making 42 appearances in all competitions, yet he couldn’t lead them back into the Premier League.

This summer, he was on the move again, joining French side Stade Rennais for a fee believed to be £8.4m, meaning Leeds have even made a profit on the player.

Clement will be hoping that his time in charge of the Light Blues will allow him to sign young talent cheaply, before moving them on for transfer fees in this region.

Celtic have done this expertly in recent years. Hopefully, the Belgian has taken plenty of notice.
