Yash Dhull, the Delhi batter who led India to the Under-19 World Cup title last year, will captain India A at the Men’s Emerging Teams Asia Cup 50-overs tournament, which will be held in Sri Lanka from July 14 to 23. Dhull’s deputy is the Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad allrounder Abhishek Sharma. The tournament involves the A teams from the five Asian Full Member boards – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – as well as the senior teams of Nepal, Oman and UAE.There is no age restriction on the players who can feature in this tournament, but India have named a squad with a distinctly youthful tinge, with all 15 players less than 23 years old. Four of the five standby players are Under-23s as well, with the Saurashtra wicketkeeper-batter Snell Patel the lone exception at 29. The squad, incidentally, was picked by India’s junior selection committee chaired by former Karnataka keeper Thilak Naidu. The main squad includes a number of players who impressed during IPL 2023, including top-order batter Sai Sudharsan – who scored 96 in the tournament final – keepers Prabhsimran Singh and Dhruv Jurel, and fast bowlers Harshit Rana and Akash Singh.Former Saurashtra batter Sitanshu Kotak is the head coach of the side. He will be assisted by bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule and fielding coach Munish Bali.India A will begin their campaign on July 13 when they face UAE at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.India A squad: Yash Dhull (capt), Abhishek Sharma (vice-capt), Sai Sudharsan, Nikin Jose, Pradosh Ranjan Paul, Riyan Parag, Nishant Sindhu, Prabhsimran Singh (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Manav Suthar, Yuvrajsinh Dodiya, Harshit Rana, Akash Singh, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Rajvardhan Hangargekar. Maharaja Trophy auction: Abhinav the most expensive buy; Agarwal, Padikkal also fetch big money

Batters were the flavour of the day at the Maharaja Trophy auction in Bengaluru on Saturday, with Mayank Agarwal, Devdutt Padikkal, Manish Pandey all attracting big bids. However, the biggest bid was reserved for middle-order batter Abhinav Manohar, who was signed for INR 15 lakh by Shivamogga Lions, one of the two new franchises along with Mangalore Dragons in the six-team tournament that is to run from August 13 to 29.Agarwal was signed for INR 14 lakh by Bengaluru Blasters, while Padikkal (INR 13.2 lakh) and Pandey (INR 10.6 lakh) attracted the next highest bids, by defending champions Gulbarga Mystics and Hubli Tigers, respectively. In all, over 700 cricketers from across the state were slotted and auctioned across four groups. Category A included India and IPL players, while Category B comprised those who have played in the BCCI tournaments at the senior level. State players from across the BCCI’s age-group tournaments formed Category C. All other players from the state were bracketed in Category D.Among the fast bowlers, Vijaykumar Vyshak, who earned a maiden IPL deal with Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier this year, was signed for INR 8.8 lakh by Mystics, while Prasidh Krishna, who is set to return to competitive cricket after more than a year, went for INR 7.4 lakh to Mysuru Warriors.Abhinav Manohar was picked up by Shivamogga Lions for INR 15 lakhs•BCCI

Spin-bowling allrounders Shreyas Gopal and K Gowtham went to Lions and Dragons for INR 7.4 lakh and INR 6.6 lakh, respectively. Meanwhile, Karun Nair, currently playing minor county cricket in England, returned to Warriors for INR 6.8 lakh amid the reports of him looking to pursue opportunities outside the state in domestic cricket. Nair hasn’t played any form of cricket for Karnataka for over a year.Among younger players, Nikin Jose, currently playing in the emerging team’s Asia Cup in Sri Lanka, was snapped up for INR 7 lakh by Dragons. Jose had a prolific debut season across formats, and is now considered an all-format regular. This year, the tournament returns to a franchise model following a season in which the KSCA had complete control of all cricketing aspects – right from player drafts to payments to the appointments of coaches and staff. At the time, apart from “restoring credibility” after the tournament had been struck by a series of spot-fixing controversies, the KSCA said the shift had been made keeping in mind the country’s tax laws.At that time, the KSCA’s cricket committee, headed by then president and former India allrounder Roger Binny, had formed a core group of six selectors – picked from across the six zones of the state – to take part in the draft process, and payments were uniform as per the grades to which players belonged. Each team will play the other five twice. The top four will then compete in Qualifiers and Eliminator, just like the IPL playoffs system. All matches will be played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

An opportunity for Cameron Bancroft to improve chances of a Test comeback

A strong performance for Australia A against New Zealand A could vault him up the pecking order

Andrew McGlashan27-Aug-2023One of the most interesting aspects of the upcoming Australian cricket season is the identity of David Warner’s successor at the top of the order in the Test team.It remains to be seen whether that vacancy will need filling against Pakistan in mid-December or against West Indies a month later. Warner wants to retire at the SCG, his home ground, in the first week of January and while that is probably how it plays out, it’s not yet certain.Given the recent hierarchy, it would appear Cameron Bancroft, last season’s leading Sheffield Shield run-scorer by a distance, is currently no higher than third in line; Marcus Harris was the reserve batter through the Ashes and much of the last 18 months, while Matt Renshaw is also back in the mix. A four-match stint for Somerset early in the English season was a struggle for Bancroft; he averaged 19.57 and also had his off stump poleaxed by Stuart Broad, but the argument can be made that he is unfortunate not to be higher in the running.Related

Five years after Sandpapergate, what has changed in Australian cricket?

Bancroft gets chance to audition for Warner's position

Bancroft now has the opportunity to rekindle last season’s form having been selected in the Australia A side to face New Zealand A in two four-day games in Brisbane and Mackay over the next fortnight. Harris has been rested after his time on the road and Renshaw will only feature in the one-dayers which follow – a sign, perhaps, that the selectors feel confident in knowing their credentials, but runs for Bancroft in this series and the first six Sheffield Shield matches before the Test summer begins could still be persuasive.Bancroft is aware of the opportunity but is determined for it not to become a distraction.”I feel like I’ve been around it my whole career. The amount of times I would have been talked about to be a potential selection is a lot,” he told ESPNcricinfo ahead of the opening game against New Zealand A. “Hopefully I can draw on those times and those experiences to just focus on what I can do for myself and the teams I’m playing for.”If you can do that everything else will take care of itself. It’s not easy to do, obviously, everyone has aspirations and wants things. But if you can do that, stay in the moment, that’s what’s important. Regardless of the opportunities that were coming up in the Australian team, it never once changed how I would have wanted to approach last season.”Last year was good and I probably gave myself an opportunity to get selected – it didn’t quite happen but that doesn’t change the drive for me to still be excellent in what I do. I feel if I stick to that then opportunities, I’m sure, will present themselves moving forward.”Bancroft’s ten-match Test career has two parts. The first was brought to an abrupt halt by the ball-tampering scandal in 2018 after he had shown glimpses of being up to the challenge. After marking his return from the ban by batting for 621 balls against New South Wales, he was recalled for the 2019 Ashes but only lasted two matches because his technique was picked apart. However, he was selected for the home series against Pakistan despite lean Shield returns. In the end he didn’t play, finished the season with an average of 15.92, and was dropped by Western Australia. He began the climb back from there and found career-best form in Western Australia’s Sheffield Shield title defence last summer, scoring 945 runs with four centuries.Cameron Bancroft did not have a good season with Somerset•Getty Images”Like to think I’ve tried to learn from the past,” Bancroft said. “[Last season] I just tried to be really consistent with my method and with how I was analysing things. As an opener you are always going to get a good ball, sometimes the ball is going to move, it’s going to be challenging. Feel like that worked well for me last season and hopefully it’s something I can keep building on.”Bancroft continues to work closely Justin Langer as well as Beau Casson, Western Australia’s batting coach, while for the Australia A series he will have his state head coach Adam Voges in charge of the side.”I idolised JL [Langer] as a player and he had a big influence on me when he coached WA,” Bancroft said. “I felt like I wanted that edge that he brings in his personality and wanted to be in the presence of that. We have regular contact. He’s a brilliant coach and I love what he contributes to my game.”[Beau’s] influence on my batting has been really awesome. He’s got a really special way with words and knowing what to say, when to say it, to get the best out of you. I find Cass is someone to lean on. I’m really lucky that those two coaches communicate with each other and it certainly makes my life easier when I’m looking to maintain and improve things in my game.”Bancroft turns 31 in November, an age when batters are often considered to be coming into their prime. “There’s always examples in cricket where you mature and it kind of works for you,” he said. “Like to think the older I get the wiser I become, and you can use that to play better. I want to play Test cricket again. Think there’s still plenty of time and opportunity.”Australia A four-day squad Wes Agar, Cameron Bancroft, Jordan Buckingham, Ben Dwarshuis, Caleb Jewell, Campbell Kellaway, Matthew Kuhnemann, Nathan McAndrew, Nathan McSweeney, Joel Paris, Jimmy Peirson, Mitch Perry, Josh Philippe, Mark Steketee, Mitchell Swepson, Tim WardNew Zealand A four-day squad Muhammad Abbas, Adi Ashok (second game only), Tom Bruce (capt), Leo Carter, Josh Clarkson, Henry Cooper, Jacob Duffy, Cam Fletcher, Dean Foxcroft (second game only), Mitch Hay, Scott, Kuggeleijn, Will O’Rourke, Ajaz Patel, Brett Randell, Sean Solia

'Unfairly treated' Jack Grealish told to reignite career with Arsenal as Pep Guardiola shuns Man City's £100m outcast

Grealish was left out of City's squad for the Club World Cup after agreeing with club chiefs to leave ahead of the new season. Grealish made just seven Premier League starts last season and was snubbed for the FA Cup final. And former Blackburn Rovers and Scotland defender Colin Hendry has told him to find a new club immediately and to pick his next destination wisely.

AdvertisementWHAT HENDRY SAID

Hendry said, via Coin Poker: "I think he’s unfairly treated sometimes. People have ideas about him that I don’t think are true. You can’t win what he has done and have the career he’s had – getting the £100m move to City – winning the treble, without having something about you. He’s been a scapegoat sometimes. He’s an excellent footballer and now he has a decision to make. It’s a great position for him to be in because he leave’s City with a shed-load of medals and the opportunity to go and show everyone who he is as a player. He absolutely must pick the right club that will allow him to express himself."

Getty ImagesTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Grealish has been linked with a whole host of clubs as his next destination although according to the latest reports he is closest to joining Everton or Tottenham. But Hendry would like him to join City's title rivals Arsenal. "I want to see him go and prove people wrong, even though he doesn’t really have anything to prove to anyone," he said. "Whether that is in the Premier League, with say a return to Aston Villa, or somewhere on the continent. Whoever gets him will be getting an unbelievable player. I actually think he could be a good addition for a team like Arsenal because they’re in need of a bit more creativity."

DID YOU KNOW?

Hendry first spotted Grealish in the academy system and knew he was destined for great things. But he said choosing the right club is the most important decision of his career. He said: "Jack is a player that I’ve followed for a long time. When I was working as the Blackburn academy coach, we played Villa and he was the best player on the pitch by miles. I’ve kind of been following him since, and he’s gone and had an unbelievable career. It looks like Jack’s City days are numbered. He’s been left out of the Club World Cup squad and he didn’t play nearly enough football last season. It’s going to be a big summer for him and he’s got some big decisions to make, possibly the biggest decision of his career in terms of making sure that whichever club he decides to join next season, it’s the right one for him."

Truncado, a partida seguia faltosa.

Inicialmente a arbitragem apontou o pênalti.

Sam Whiteman resists but Northants let bonus points slip once again

Early wickets in reply prevent Lancashire from taking full control on opening day at Wantage Road

ECB Reporters Network03-Sep-2023

Sam Whiteman led the Northants resistance•Getty Images

Sam Whiteman passed fifty for the fourth time in Championship cricket this season but self-inflicted wounds meant Northamptonshire again failed to raise a batting point on day one of their game with Lancashire at Wantage Road.In his last game this season for the Steelbacks before returning to Western Australia, Whiteman proved the mainstay of the home side’s total of 232, hitting 79 with a six and 12 fours after they lost the toss and were put in.A lapse of concentration cost him the chance of a third hundred of the campaign and other careless shots and two farcical run-outs meant their batting bonus point total for the season remains stuck on three. Wickets were shared around, Tom Hartley, George Balderson and Will Williams claiming two apiece.Northamptonshire though struck back with the ball, Lancashire losing openers Luke Wells and Keaton Jennings both lbw to Ben Sanderson and Jack White respectively, Jennings looking aggrieved over a dismissal which looked high and sliding down leg-side. Nightwatchman Williams was dropped at second slip by Gay in the final over as the visitors closed on 54 for 2, 178 runs in arears.Whiteman was at the crease early, opener Hassan Azad having been pinned lbw playing no shot during a probing opening spell from Tom Bailey. As with any batter faced with a 10.30am start, the left-hander needed his share of good fortune, inside edging on numerous occasions, three times seeing the ball bounce over the stumps. However, two fours in one over from Williams got him up and running before an almost head high no-ball from Jack Blatherwick was despatched over the short boundary into the West Stand. These shows of aggression were the exception where he was concerned, any fluency there was coming from Emilio Gay. The young opener, who endured a poor Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign, was looking to recapture the form which saw him make 144 and 61 against the Red Roses in the reverse fixture back in July.Save for an early vociferous lbw shout from Bailey the signs were good, the left-hander creaming several dreamy drives through the extra-cover mid-off region in moving elegantly to 35. However, with lunch approaching, confusion over a second run saw Gay sent back by Whiteman with no hope of making his ground thanks to Dane Vilas’s arrow-like throw from the deep.To rub salt in Northamptonshire wounds, skipper Luke Procter was also out prior to the adjournment, Blatherwick getting one to lift from not far short of a length, the ball taking the glove and flying head high to Williams at third slip.Whatever Whiteman had for lunch he emerged from the dressing-room with more intent, sending three deliveries from one Blatherwick over to the fence as he moved to 50 in 71 balls. Soon afterwards the bowler was forced from the field with a niggle.Keogh kept Whiteman company through the early afternoon, without finding any real fluency, before inside edging one from Williams into his off stump. The injury to Blatherwick forced Lancashire skipper Jennings to turn to the spin of Hartley and he would prove the undoing of Whiteman, who, in a loss of concentration played across a straight one and was adjudged lbw.The loss of their anchor proved the cue for a slump, Saif Zaib who had played nicely to that point, driving lazily at Balderson to lose his off stump, the bowler then accounting for Justin Broad caught behind by Phil Salt, the batter somewhat surprised to be given out.The second comical run-out of the day accounted for Tom Taylor and despite some late hitting from wicketkeeper Lewis McManus and Jack White, the hosts came up short in their quest for a first batting point at Wantage Road this season.

Danny Lamb burst, George Bartlett fifty help lift Somerset off bottom

Somerset put in a complete performance with bat and ball to ease past Durham by six wickets in their Metro Bank One-Day Cup Group B match at South Northumberland in Gosforth.Durham struggled to find their timing at the start of their innings amid impressive bowling from Danny Lamb, who ended the innings with figures of 3 for 25. Alex Lees offered resistance with 63 in a partnership worth 78 with David Bedingham, but once Bedingham was run out the hosts lost their final eight wickets for 47 to slump to 181 all out.Somerset had no issues chasing down the target, romping their way home with 23.1 overs to spare. George Thomas and Andrew Umeed set the platform before George Bartlett blasted his second half-century of the tournament to secure a dominant win for the visitors and effectively end the hosts’ hopes of reaching the knockout stage.Somerset won the toss and were justified in their decision as Durham failed to get away. Michael Jones endured a torrid time in the middle, struggling to time the ball on a tough surface and overcast conditions. He was dropped on 1 before he finally fell for 6 off 30 as Lamb found his inside edge and James Rew claimed a simple catch.Lamb continued to put the Durham batters under pressure as the hosts struggled to score three runs per over in the opening third of the innings. Scott Borthwick became Lamb’s second victim when he was pinned lbw for 11, reducing the hosts to 56 for 2.Lees and Bedingham responded with a calm approach against the seamers. After seeing off the threat, both players began to up the ante against the Somerset spinners.Bedingham cleared the rope twice from Shoaib Bashir’s offspin, racing his way a run-a-ball 35 during their stand for the third wicket. Lees ground his way to a deserved half-century, his third of the competition, manoeuvring the hosts towards a solid platform. But a miscommunication between Lees and Bedingham would hand Somerset the breakthrough as the South African was run out. The wicket sparked a collapse in the Durham ranks, falling from 134 for 2 to 181 all out. Lees picked out George Thomas on the fence from the next ball, while Jonathan Bushnell and Liam Trevaskis fell cheaply to the spin of Josh Thomas. The lower order wilted amid impressive bowling from the visitors as only two players beyond Lees and Bedingham made double figures, resulting in Durham being skittled out with five overs remaining in their innings.Somerset eased into their chase through Thomas and Umeed, reaching their fifty partnership for the opening stand within eight overs. George Drissell ended the partnership on 74 by removing Umeed for 36 and Thomas followed in the next over to Trevaskis. But, Rew and Bartlett calmed any potential nerves in the Somerset dressing room and duly whittled down the victory total with a quickfire stand of 52. Although Rew fell to Trevaskis, Bartlett pushed on with a brutal assault of the Durham bowlers to reach his fifty from 31 balls, including back-to-back sixes against Bas de Leede.Bartlett was out for 55 to present Trevaskis with his third wicket, but Somerset still eased over the line as Paul Coughlin bowled a no-ball to take the visitors to their victory total.
