Ederson was expected to start the season curtain-raiser with Wolves but was taken out of the squad following a bout of gastroenteritis. The Brazilian has now recovered and is available for selection, but Ederson's replacement James Trafford kept a clean sheet at Molineux and Guardiola now has a conundrum over who to play in the clash with Tottenham.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

There has been a great deal of speculation regarding Ederson's future this summer following the arrival of Trafford, a City academy product who returned to the club after two years with Burnley. Ederson is only 32 years old and a number of high profile clubs – including Galatasaray – will be looking on with interest to see if Guardiola leaves him on the bench.

  • WHAT GUARDIOLA SAID

Guardiola told reporters: "We will decide tomorrow or tonight or after dinner, (but we're) happy. The new players bring a new energy, new everything. I've changed four or five or six times close staff and it's tough but always they bring a new energy and ideas. Players are the same and James brings his youth and desire to play at the club he was born and grew in. We're happy for the performance, but it's just the first game. (We need to) just be consistent in the way we play and improve in the way we have done and we have to do better against Spurs."

Santos have turned to Argentine coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda to try to rescue their season after parting ways with Cléber Xavier. The former Fortaleza boss immediately touched on the club’s most pressing subject: Neymar.

The Brazilian star returned to Vila Belmirohoping to revive his career, but injuries have kept him sidelined and even out of the national team picture. Despite the difficult circumstances, Vojvoda expressed confidence in the forward’s ability to change games.

“Neymar is a decisive player. He’s not a problem, he’s not just another footballer – he’s one of the best in the world. I want to help him,” Vojvoda said at his introduction. “I’m sure I’ll also learn a lot from him. He loves Santos, and Santos loves him.”

The 49-year-old coach arrives after leaving Fortaleza in late July, where he made history by qualifying the modest club from Brazil’s northeast to the Copa Libertadores in 2022, 2023, and 2025, and reaching the Copa Sudamericana final in 2023. Now, he faces the challenge of lifting Santos, who sit 15th in the table with 21 points from 20 matches – just two above the relegation zone currently occupied by Vitória, Juventude, Fortaleza, and Recife.

"This is a source of pride for me, for my family, and especially for my father, who always spoke to me about Pelé,” Vojvoda added.

'We all know his mentality to win things' – Rodrigo De Paul says Lionel Messi's champion's mindset is motivating Inter Miami for the Leagues Cup final vs Seattle Sounders

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Inter Miami are on the brink of another historic achievement. Having lifted the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the MLS Supporters’ Shield in 2024, the Florida side could now capture their third trophy when they take on the Seattle Sounders Sunday at Lumen Field.

Controversy swirled earlier this week following Miami’s Leagues Cup semifinal win over Orlando City, when the Herons were awarded a penalty while trailing 1-0. Critics pointed to favorable refereeing, but head coach Javier Mascherano denied any suggestion that his team has been helped by officiating decisions.

“I can’t control what people say about referees,” Mascherano said on Saturday. “Both Miami and Sounders deserve to be in the final. Against Necaxa we had a player sent off unfairly, and still managed to draw in the final minutes. We came from behind against Pumas and Orlando, too. Sometimes referees help you, sometimes they hurt you. But it would be terrible to say we’re here because of them. We earned this. Both teams made it here because they were the best.”

The Argentine coach confirmed he will have virtually a full squad available, including Lionel Messi. The exception is Allen Obando, who recently picked up an injury.

“Messi is fine,” he added. “Once again he made the difference against Orlando despite having missed some games. I’m happy for him and how he finished the match.”

On Saturday, Rodrigo De Paul also stressed the importance of another possible trophy for Messi, who sits on the verge of the 47th title of his illustrious career.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The matchup brings together two clubs currently in strong form – both of whom also represented MLS at the FIFA Club World Cup. Mascherano praised his opponent.

“They’re a very good team, with a coach who has built a long track record," he said. "They’ve won many titles, they’re in a great moment after the Club World Cup. It will be very difficult, but we have the tools to compete, and we’ll give everything to win.”

The coach will return to the bench after serving a one-match suspension for a red card.

“Obviously it’s better to be on the sideline, close to the players, to give them support. Coaching is about making as few mistakes as possible, and I prefer to live it from the bench, not the stands,” he said. “When you come to a project like this, expectations are to win everything. A few months ago we couldn’t reach the Champions Cup final, but now football gives us another opportunity.”

Miami have faced a packed schedule in recent weeks, including a cross-country trip to Seattle. Mascherano admitted travel disruptions due to storms delayed the team’s arrival.

“We got here a bit later than expected, but the squad is ready," he said The only player missing is Allen Obando.”

    WHAT RODRIGO DE PAUL SAID

Rodrigo De Paul also addressed the media and emphasized the team’s determination.

“We know the rival very well – they’ve had a great tournament and scored many goals. With their fans behind them, they’ll be eager to win, just like us,” said the Argentine midfielder. “I came here to win titles, to compete for everything. Everyone knows my football. Tomorrow is a final, and I’ll give everything I have to win it. When a cup is at stake, my only thought is to enjoy it. Football isn’t always fair – you can’t win every time – but hopefully tomorrow will be a happy ending.”

De Paul also highlighted Messi's motivation.

“We all know his mentality to win things. It’s a huge motivation for the younger guys, for the whole team," he said. "Winning gives you energy, it’s always something you want to repeat. Tomorrow could be a great joy for all of us.”

O Leão do Pici é o maior vencedor do Cearense.

PRA IGUALAR A DECISÃO

CONSISTÊNCIA E VIRADA NO AGREGADO

Celtic sold an Idah upgrade who could be his country's "best ever striker"

It is fair to say that Celtic’s actions on deadline day at the end of the summer transfer window did not go down very well amongst a large section of the fanbase.

Such was the reaction to the club’s work on deadline day, the Scottish Premiership champions felt they needed to release a statement explaining their processes and why they failed to bring in any strikers before the window slammed shut.

One interesting line to pick out from the statement is the following: “The Club plans our recruitment and player trading strategy responsibly and consistently, ensuring the squad can be strengthened for the short, medium and long term, while also seeking to ensure the development and progression of our Academy players. Our objective is to create Champions League players.”

This is an interesting line to pick out because the Hoops opted to cash in on Adam Idah on deadline day, despite the fact that they had failed to sign a high-calibre number nine to that point.

Celtic then had to dip into the free agent market to sign Kelechi Iheanacho the day after deadline day because they were unable to sign a replacement for Idah before the window closed.

These decisions have left the Hoops in a position where their squad looks much weaker in the short-term than it did at this point last summer, which brings the aforementioned part of the statement into question.

Why Celtic have a problem in the number nine position

Celtic have sold Idah and Kyogo Furuhashi in 2025, raking in up to £17m in the process, but have only spent £1.5m on striker signings in that time.

Shin Yamada was brought in from Kawasaki Frontale for a fee of £1.5m this summer as the only senior striker who was not signed on a free transfer by the club in 2025.

The Japanese centre-forward scored two goals in 21 matches in the J1 League in 2025 before his move to Celtic, which shows that the club did not sign a player who was in form and ready to hit the ground running.

That has proven to be the case. Yamada has failed to score in five appearances for the Scottish giants in all competitions so far this season, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, all three of Celtic’s natural number nine options have struggled for league goals in 2025, as all of them have failed to score more than two goals and missed more ‘big chances’ than they have scored goals.

These statistics show that the Hoops have a clear problem in the centre-forward position in the short-term, at least, after they allowed Kyogo and Idah to depart without replacing them with ‘Champions League players’.

Kenny, who scored his first goal for the club against Aberdeen, has shown promise with two goals in ten appearances and one start in the Premiership to date, but he was an unused substitute in both games against Kairat, which suggests that Brendan Rodgers does not fully trust him yet.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

Looking back, therefore, Celtic may regret their decision to sell Hyeon-gyu Oh to Genk in the summer of 2024, because his current form suggests that he would have been an upgrade on Idah and could have solved their attacking woes at Parkhead.

Why Celtic should have kept Hyeon-gyu Oh

Rodgers sanctioned a deal to sell the number nine to Genk for a fee of £2.3m in order to facilitate the permanent signing of Idah from Norwich City for £9.5m.

As you can see in the graphic above, the Ireland international was unable to replicate his prolific loan spell during his time as a permanent player at Parkhead, which led to him being sold to Swansea for a deal that could reach £7m.

That immediately suggests that Rodgers and Celtic made the wrong call to sign Idah on a permanent deal, particularly for the finances involved, because they were then willing to take a loss on him after just 12 months.

Oh’s form since moving on from the Hoops last summer only adds further evidence to that case, as he has been a huge success in Belgium with Genk, and caught the eye for his country.

The 24-year-old marksman delivered a goal and an assist for South Korea in a 2-2 draw with Mexico during the international break. That led to Korean football account Fighting Stripes Football claiming that Oh “has the potential to be Korea’s best ever striker” because of his technical qualities and his top-class mentality.

It is now down to the striker to go on and fulfill that potential, but a goal and an assist against a very respectable footballing nation in Mexico is a good way to start.

Oh’s form in Belgium for Genk also shows that the striker has been on fire since his move away from Celtic, and that he could have been an upgrade on Idah if the Hoops had kept him in Glasgow.

As you can see in the table above, the South Korea international delivered more goals, more shots on target, more xA, and more assists per 90 than Idah at league level in the 2024/25 campaign.

Oh scored nine goals from 6.95 xG in 684 minutes of football for Genk in the Pro League, per Sofascore, which shows that he was incredibly clinical in front of goal and more than made the most of the minutes that he got on the pitch.

Such was the impressive nature of his performances for Genk, Stuttgart were reportedly set to clinch a £24m deal for the striker, before they backed out of a move after the medical brought up a red flag over an old ACL injury.

Whilst the move did not go through, the fact that Stuttgart were willing to pay £24m for a player who was let go by Celtic for £2.3m last year shows that the club made a mistake when they cashed in on him in 2024.

Therefore, Celtic messed up by selling Oh last year because he could have offered more to the team than Idah and been the striker that Rodgers is now sorely lacking.
