Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly closing in on completing the signing of a Manchester United youngster in the final few hours of deadline day.
Horrible summer to forget for Sheffield Wednesday
This summer has been a horrible experience for anyone of an Owls persuasion, with the ownership issue surrounding Dejphon Chansiri threatening the entire future of the club.
Wednesday have found themselves in financial turmoil and under threat of long transfer bans, with supporters protesting against Chansiri, calling for him to sell up. Staff members have continually not been paid on time, including the players, with the problems showing no real sign of being resolved fully yet.
Sheffield Wednesday ownerDejphon Chansiri.
Unsurprisingly, the Owls’ off-field struggles have led to a domino effect on the pitch, with Henrik Pedersen’s side without a win in their opening four Championship matches this season, losing three of them and looking like relegation fodder.
Despite this, there is hope that Wednesday are set to agree a deal for one target before the summer transfer window slams shut on Monday evening, with a positive update emerging.
Sheffield Wednesday set to sign Man Utd player
According to journalist Andy Giddings on X, Sheffield Wednesday are set to sign Manchester United youngster Harry Amass on loan for the remainder of the 2025/26 season. The 18-year-old left-back has travelled to undergo a medical, but there is no guarantee that the move will be sanctioned yet, prompting the reporter to call the situation “madness” and perhaps symbolic of the type of decision making Owls fans are unfortunately getting used to.
This will be a welcome boost if they can get it over the line however, as they desperately look to see their side being given some hope of avoiding relegation this season.
Depth is needed in the squad to likely be able to compete as the campaign goes on, and Amass is a talented young player who can excel as both a left-back and left winger, being lauded by Ruben Amorim despite a 4-1 defeat at Newcastle earlier this year.
“I think he did quite well. He caught a player that is really fast, he made his debut in maybe one of the hardest stadiums with a team that is really in a good moment. I think he did really well so he needs to continue and we need to help all these young kids to perform in a higher level.”
Amass has made seven senior appearances for United, which is hugely impressive, even amid their own current struggles, and if a move to Wednesday does go through on deadline day, it could be a great piece of business between now and the end of the season.
Shami opens up about his struggles and recovery after injuries and a surgery sidelined him from international cricket for over a year

Who makes it to India’s pace attack against Bangladesh?
Mohammed Shami feared that his career was over when a lengthy rehabilitation kept him out of cricket throughout 2024. Now leading India’s pace attack in the Champions Trophy, Shami compared his comeback to “a toddler learning how to walk”.”I always wondered when I would be able to put my feet on the ground again, as someone who is used to running on the field constantly was now in crutches,” Shami, 34, told . “A lot of thoughts used to run through my mind. Will I be able to do it again? Will I be able to walk without a limp? For the first two months, I often doubted whether I would be able to play again as an injury like this followed by a 14-month break can pull you down.”My first question to the doctor was ‘how many days until I can be back on the field’. He said, ‘my priority is to get you to walk, then jog, and then run and thinking about playing competitive cricket is still a distant goal’.Related

“After 60 days, when they asked me to put my feet on the ground, you won’t believe me, but I have never been more scared to put my foot on the ground. It felt like I was starting over, like a toddler learning how to walk, and I was worried about any complications.”After overcoming an ankle injury, Shami underwent surgery in March 2024. He subsequently faced issues in his knee, further delaying his return. After returning to the Bengal team for the domestic season, Shami rejoined India’s white-ball squad during the home series against England, and proved his fitness for the Champions Trophy.Shami was the highest wicket-taker of the last ICC tournament he played – the 2023 ODI World Cup – despite being on the field for only seven fixtures. He now finds himself needing to play another big role with Jasprit Bumrah out with an injury.”The desire to wear the India badge on my chest kept me going,” he said. “You endure the pain and take it one step at a time without complaints or bitterness. It was tough and there was pain, but with resilience and patience I made it through. My motivation has always been to serve my country for as long as possible. Because once you step away, you’re just like anyone else.”

Seemingly having a ball experimenting with the reverse sweep, Steven Smith’s mastery in Asia continued and he combined with a dashing Alex Carey to defy a sharp-turning, deteriorating Galle surface as Australia grabbed firm control of the second Test. The game was in the balance when Australia were 91 for 3 just after lunch on day two in reply to Sri Lanka’s first-innings of 257. But stand-in skipper Smith and Carey produced an unbroken 239-run partnership to deflate a Sri Lankan team staring down the barrel of a hefty series defeat.Carey was fluent from the get go and motored past a tiring Smith by stumps as Australia build a sizeable first innings lead on a very dry surface.Smith reached his 36th Test century in style with a boundary in the final session on day two and raised his baggy green before nodding several times to his team-mates in the terraces. He broke a couple of Australian records in Asia along the way having overtaken Ricky Ponting for most runs and his seventh ton lifted him past Allan Border.Steven Smith brought out the rarely-seen reverse sweep during his faultless hundred•Getty Images
After a few modest years by his lofty standards, Smith has rewound the clock in recent months having now scored four centuries in his last eight Test innings. Always looking to add to his repertoire, Smith dusted off rarely used reverse sweeps and, while not always effective, it did give Sri Lanka more to think about.Smith might have been inspired by watching Carey, who swept – orthodox and reverse – almost flawlessly as he sped to his second Test century. Fittingly, Carey reached his ton with a sweep to the boundary as he raised his arms aloft to cap his strong form in recent months. It was a significant moment for Carey, who had previously in Sri Lanka and India come under scrutiny for his compulsive use of the sweep. His sublime innings also included quick footwork and brute power as he repeatedly thumped the spinners straight down the ground.Carey batted for the first time in his Test career at No. 5 with Josh Inglis having spent a significant period off the field in Sri Lanka’s innings because of back spasms. But Carey was more than comfortable in a position he occupies for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield. It was a major disappointment for Sri Lanka, who went wicketless for almost the entirety of the final two sessions. Their spinners occasionally produced sharp turn, but were unable to sustain the pressure and appeared out of answers as the day wore on.Alex Carey celebrates his second Test century•Getty Images
Offspinner Nishan Peiris was their most threatening bowler in a good bounceback after he was ineffective in the first Test with 0 for 189 off 41 overs and deemed fortunate to retain his spot over legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay. He turned the ball square at times and almost clean-bowled Smith just before tea with a fizzing offbreak that narrowly missed the top of the stumps. But Sri Lanka perhaps will rue not selecting Vandersay after his promising performance in the first Test, while talisman Prabath Jayasuriya lacked bite after a promising start and he resorted at times to a defensive leg-stump line to Smith.Sri Lanka had begun with optimism at the start of Australia’s innings. There was intrigue over whether Sri Lanka’s spinners would take the new ball, but lone quick Lahiru Kumara started and opener Travis Head enjoyed the pace with three early boundaries. Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva surprisingly decided to share the new ball having not bowled in the first Test due to a side strain.Head rattled along at a run-a-ball until on 21 he used his feet to Peiris but was outdone by turn, and a thick edge was taken at slip. All eyes were then on Marnus Labuschagne, who only made 20 off 50 balls in Australia’s massive 654 for 6 declared in the series-opener. Having not scored a Test century since the 2023 Ashes tour, pressure is mounting on Labuschagne with his spot for this match attracting some attention. He started well with a first-ball boundary through the covers, but he didn’t add any further runs and fell in the next over when he was trapped lbw by Jayasuriya in a decision overturned on review. Jayasuriya slid a fuller delivery that beat a tentative Labuschagne on the back foot. Labuschagne looked despondent when his fate was sealed and he trudged off the field.Smith, wearing his baggy green, had a nervous start with a big lbw shout from Jayasuriya turned down as Sri Lanka burnt a review. But Smith countered the sharp spin by skipping down the pitch while Usman Khawaja unfurled the reverse sweep just like he did in his double-century last week.Nishan Peiris had Usman Khawaja lbw and the game was in the balance at 91 for 3•Getty Images
They blunted the spinners as Australia reached lunch well placed at 85 for 2. The game sparked to life on resumption with Smith given out lbw by umpire Joel Wilson after a low Peiris delivery struck him under the knee roll. But Smith quickly reviewed and his confidence was justified with the ball hitting him well outside the line.Moments later, Wilson was again quick to raise the finger but this time he was vindicated with Khawaja plumb lbw on 36 after he tried to pull Peiris only to misjudge the line and length. But Sri Lanka’s bid for more inroads came to a halt and they failed to put enough pressure on Carey, whose confidence grew as he slog swept offspinner Ramesh Mendis for six.Smith brought up his half-century in style with a boundary as the runs continued to flow through to tea apart from when Jayasuriya restored to a leg-stump line. After the interval, Smith and Carey continued to score at ease as they tapped the ball around for singles with the field well spread as if it was the middle overs of an ODI.After reaching his century, Smith appeared to be flagging amid the oppressive humidity and he dropped anchor as Carey took over to reach his landmark in fine fashion.Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka finished with what appeared a competitive first-innings total after Kusal Mendis and No. 11 Kumara added 28 runs in the first 30 minutes of the day’s play. Mendis was left stranded on 85 but had spearheaded Sri Lanka’s recovery from 150 for 6.Australia’s three specialist bowlers Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Matthew Kuhnemann did the bulk of the heavy lifting and picked up three wickets apiece.
Everton’s summer business has been nothing short of ambitious.
The arrival of Jack Grealish on loan from Manchester City has stolen headlines, but David Moyes isn’t content to stop there.
With the opening fixture against Leeds United at Elland Road just days away, the Scot is pressing to secure one final signing – a right-sided attacker to balance his frontline.
That position has been something of a headache for Everton in recent seasons.
Despite flashes of quality from the likes of Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrøm, the Toffees have lacked a consistent threat on the right wing.
Moyes has long favoured wingers who can carry the ball at speed, stretch defensive lines, and cut inside to shoot – traits that became a hallmark of Jarrod Bowen’s game at West Ham.
The club’s pursuit of Southampton youngster Tyler Dibling has been well documented, but negotiations have stalled. Multiple bids have been rejected, with the Saints demanding £45m plus £5m in add-ons and a 25% sell-on clause.
Dibling has trained away from the first team, and talks are expected this week, but the price tag is proving prohibitive.
In the meantime, Moyes has turned his focus to a player who could offer many of the same qualities and perhaps even mirror the impact Bowen had when he first joined Moyes’ West Ham side in 2020.
Everton's search for a winger
According to Sébastian Vidal, Abdul Fatawu has been “targeted” Everton this summer, with Aston Villa also now entering the race for his signature.
Known for his blistering pace and direct dribbling style, he has drawn comparisons to Bowen not only for his position but also for his playing profile.
Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given was unequivocal in his praise after Leicester’s win over Southampton last October:
“This guy is absolutely lightning… a brilliant talent.”
Transfer Focus

Fatawu’s journey has already taken him from Sporting Lisbon to Leicester, where he initially arrived on loan before signing permanently in 2024 for €16m (£14m).
His market value now sits at €11m (£10m), as per Transfermarkt, making him an attainable target in a summer where Everton have already spent wisely.
Why Fatawu could thrive under Moyes
Moyes has a proven track record of maximising the output of dynamic wingers.
When Bowen joined West Ham from Hull City, he was a promising Championship player with raw potential.
Under Moyes’ guidance, Bowen developed into one of the Premier League’s most reliable wide forwards, scoring 56 goals in 193 appearances for the Hammers and netting the decisive goal in the 2023 Europa Conference League final.
Bowen’s success came down to several tactical factors that could also suit Fatawu.
Firstly, Moyes built his attack to give Bowen space to run into, often with overlapping full-backs drawing defenders away.
Secondly, Bowen was encouraged to cut inside onto his stronger left foot, opening up both shooting and passing angles.
Abdul Fatawu
Fatawu, a left-footed right-winger, thrives in similar situations, using his dribbling to force defenders onto their weaker side before striking at goal or slipping through a teammate.
Moyes believes Fatawu’s pace, power, and ability to carry the ball into dangerous areas could transform Everton’s attacking play.

His statistical profile backs up the hype – ranking in the 99th percentile for successful take-ons per 90 minutes (4.51) and progressive carries per 90 (6.53) last season, as per FBref.
For context, Bowen’s own numbers in the 2023/24 Premier League season sat at 1.01 and 2.69 respectively, making Fatawu one of the league’s most dangerous ball carriers.
What’s more, he’s not just quick in straight lines – he’s explosive over the first few yards, able to burst past a defender before they’ve had time to adjust.
That acceleration makes him ideal for counter-attacking football, a hallmark of Moyes’ best sides.
Fatawu’s ball progression numbers are even more striking when compared to Bowen’s.
His 6.53 progressive carries per 90 dwarf Bowen’s 2.69 from the 23/24 season, while his take-on success rate shows a player who can consistently beat his man.
That skill could be invaluable when breaking down deep, compact defences – something Everton struggled with throughout the last campaign.
Adding Fatawu to an attack that already features Grealish and Thierno Barry could give Moyes the balance he craves.
Barry’s aerial dominance and hold-up play would create space for Fatawu to drive into, while Grealish’s creative passing could feed him in behind.
The result could be a front line capable of hurting opponents both in transition and in sustained possession.
Fatawu’s similarities to other Premier League wide forwards are also worth noting.
His profile mirrors that of Nottingham Forest’s Dan Ndoye and Brentford-bound Dango Ouattara, as per FBref.
Of course, there are risks.
Fatawu missed 29 games last season due to his ligament injury, and his injury history will be under close scrutiny by Everton’s medical team.
But at just 21, his potential ceiling is significant, and his international experience – 19 caps for Ghana, with two goals – shows he can handle the demands of high-pressure football.
With Villa also monitoring him as a possible replacement for Leon Bailey, Everton may need to move quickly.
The Toffees’ recruitment team are understood to be preparing their approach, with the expectation that Leicester would want to at least recoup the £14m they paid for him.

Bayern Munich and England star Harry Kane, who is a huge golf fan, has been revelling in a dramatic Ryder Cup win for Team Europe. Heading into the final day of that event, it appeared as those the away side at Bethpage Black in New York would ease their way to the most convincing of victories. That is not how things played out, with Kane among those to see their nerves shredded before an iconic trophy was finally retained by Luke Donald's troops.
Thrilling finish to Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in New York
Team Europe led by seven points following the first two days of action in the United States and, following an injury to Viktor Hovland, required only two from 11 singles matches on Sunday in order to retain the Ryder Cup – with a further half-point needed in order to confirm that success outright.
The Americans, though, refused to throw in the towel, with passionate home support – which crossed the line at times when it comes to taunts aimed in the direction of Rory McIlroy and Co – inspiring Keegan Bradley’s team to stage the most unlikely of comebacks. With points picked up through the early matches, Team USA dared to dream that a miraculous win was possible.

AdvertisementRyder Cup 2025 final score: Europe prevail
That ambition was eventually extinguished, as Shane Lowry sank the put which took Europe to the 14-point mark, and the contest ultimately finished 15-13 in favour of Donald’s men – leading to an outpouring of emotion from players, staff, family and friends. Plenty of famous faces had also been on hand across the weekend to catch some of the action live.
Kane was unable to head over the Atlantic, with the Three Lions captain very much focused on his day job at Bayern Munich, but he made a point of tuning in from afar. He was up late on Sunday evening, as the action extended towards midnight in Munich, and was left celebrating as Europe condemned the USA to a first defeat on American soil since the legendary Miracle of Medinah in 2012. Kane posted on social media, alongside an image of Donald’s victorious team: "Wow, what an intense final day! Massive congratulations @rydercupeurope! Special away win in the Ryder Cup!"
GettyCareer change: Could Kane become a pro golfer?
Kane will likely be hitting the course himself at some point this week, with the 32-year-old making no secret of his other sporting passions. He has rubbed shoulders with several professional golfers, putting his game to the test in the process. Kane has previously told : "I’ve been lucky enough to play with some of the best pros, and it’s just a different ball game for them. It really is the consistency. I’m able to have probably one great round in in 20. These guys are having 20 great rounds in 25, or maybe even better, especially when you’re looking at the best players in the world. So just that consistency, and it comes down to practice. I look at how I got to where I am now in football, the hours of dedication, the hours of hard work and hours on the training pitch. It all adds up to, you know, perfecting their craft. And then that’s what those guys have done to perfect their craft in in the golf game, the amount of hours they spend on the chipping green and the putting green and on the range."
Kane boasts a single-figure handicap and, having already generated talk of exploring a route into NFL placekicking once his football career is over, has not ruled out a run at the professional golf ranks. He added on potentially pursuing that target: "I’d still say ‘never say never’, because I don’t like to rule anything out. It takes such a lot of time and dedication, it would be really, really, really tough. I think sometimes people don’t appreciate how much work goes into it. You watch it on the TV and you see them doing it so effortlessly and you think ‘I could have a go at that’, but it’s really tough. I’d never say never, but I think it’s really unlikely that will happen."

Kane the centurion: 100 goals reached for Bayern
Kane continues to maintain remarkable individual standards in his own profession, with a notable landmark reached in his latest outing. Another brace in a 4-0 victory over Werder Bremen has taken him to 100 goals for Bayern through 104 appearances in all competitions – with his trophy duck having been broken in 2024-25 when becoming a Bundesliga title winner.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has told Cole Palmer to sit out Chelsea's fixtures before the international break due to his ongoing injury concerns. The England star was substituted after just 20 minutes against Manchester United last weekend and is now set to miss games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Benfica, and Liverpool.
Palmer's injury blow
During Chelsea's farcical 2-1 defeat to Manchester United, the England international was substituted after just 20 minutes, with his side already down to 10 men after the sending off of goalkeeper Robert Sanchez in the first five minutes of the encounter. Palmer appeared particularly aggrieved to be taken off, and headed straight down the tunnel, but it was soon revealed that the playmaker had suffered a recurrence of a persistent groin injury. He also missed clashes against West Ham and Fulham due to the ongoing issue, and surgery has been discussed as a potential solution, although his manager has now appeared to soften his stance on that prospect.

Maresca taking no chances
Manager Maresca has confirmed that he has advised Palmer to rest, but stopped short of saying that the Englishman needs to go under the knife. Instead, he faces missing two Premier League games and one Champions League clash; it is, at this point, unclear if Thomas Tuchel will include him in his Three Lions squad. England play Wales in a friendly on October 9 before travelling to Latvia for a World Cup qualifier on October 14.
Maresca said, per Ben Jacobs: “We decided to protect a Cole a little bit [to] not let his injury get worse. We decided to rest him for two-three weeks until the international break to see if he can recover 100%. I don’t think he needs surgery. It’s just a matter of managing the pain in his groin.”
Palmer's latest setback
While Palmer has developed into one of the best attacking midfield players in the world at Stamford Bridge, and also on the international stage with England, Palmer has struggled for form since the turn of the year. In the first half of the 2024/25 season, up until New Year's Day, Palmer scored 12 league goals and registered six assists. Since ringing in 2025, he has managed just four goals and three assists, and now faces a prolonged period on the sidelines. During his time at Stamford Bridge, he has missed a total of seven Blues games but that number is now set to rise to at least ten. Maresca will hope that he can put the problem behind him as quickly as possible.

Palmer's big ambitions
The injury comes at a galling time for Palmer, having hailed the club's ability to go "toe-to-toe" with the best in the world after their narrow Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.
He said: "The manager said to us before that he knows we can go toe-to-toe with anyone, and I think we showed that tonight despite the result.
"It’s a good learning curve for tonight and to be back in the competition is nice, so we just need to kick off from here.
"We’re not in this competition for it to be a learning curve for us. I feel like we showed tonight that we can compete and we want to do as best as we can."
Palmer has now brought up a century of appearances for the Blues following his move from Manchester City back in 2023; he has a 10-year contract until 2033, so there is plenty of time for him to get back on the pitch and continue impacting games for the west London giants.

Glasgow Rangers have officially confirmed that Youssef Chermiti has arrived at Ibrox on a permanent deal to bolster Russell Martin’s options at the top end of the pitch.
Cyriel Dessers’ transfer to Panathinaikos, the team Rangers beat in the Champions League qualifiers earlier this season, has also been officially confirmed by the Scottish Premiership giants.
Chermiti joins Bojan Miovski in arriving at Ibrox to improve the manager’s options in the final third ahead of the rest of the first half of the 2025/26 campaign.
Rangers in pursuit of new winger
The two strikers may not be the only forwards to arrive in Glasgow before the deadline passes later this evening, though, as the club are looking at another attacker.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.
According to RangersReview, Glasgow Rangers maintain an interest in Crystal Palace winger Jesurun Rak-Sakyi heading into the final hours of the window.
The report mentions the club’s ongoing pursuit of the English forward as part of their round-up ahead of the deadline, following the Dessers and Chermiti announcements.
This means that the Gers are still looking to bolster their attack with a further addition before the window slams shut, with a deadline-busting move for Rak-Sakyi still on the cards.
Why Rangers should sign Rak-Sakyi
Kevin Thelwell must push to get this late deal over the line in the coming hours because he could add a different profile to what Martin currently has at his disposal in the final third, as the club’s new Vaclav Cerny.
The bore-draw with Celtic on Sunday highlighted the lack of diversity out wide for Rangers, as Djeidi Gassama was forced to play on the right wing, unable to do much but go back the way on his right foot when he could not take Kieran Tierney on down the outside.
Last season, Cerny provided something different in the attack as a left-footed forward who could cut in from the right to score and create goals for the team, ending the campaign with 12 goals and four assists in the Premiership, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, Rak-Sakyi offered a threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the Championship on loan at Sheffield United, but was not rewarded with the assists that his creativity deserved.
The 22-year-old star, who was described as a “frightening” forward by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored seven goals and provided two assists in 22 league starts for the Blades, and previously scored 15 goals and assisted eight goals in 40 League One starts for Charlton.
Like Cerny, he is a left-footed right winger who looks to cut in to provide a constant threat in the final third, and his performances in England suggest that he could bring a lot of quality to Ibrox.
Rak-Sakyi could also be another loan signing, as Cerny was with Wolfsburg, and make a big impact in a short time in Glasgow, without the club having to shell out millions on a permanent move, which is another reason why this could be a shrewd piece of business if they can beat the deadline.
