Francisco Lindor Has High Praise for Mets’ Newly Acquired Bullpen Arm

The deals are flowing as Major League Baseball creeps closer to the trade deadline, with teams angling to put themselves in position to make a run for a title.

Among those teams are the New York Mets, who overhauled their bullpen with two deals on Wednesday night, shipping away prospects to bring in submariner Tyler Rogers and 2024 NL Reliever of the Year Ryan Helsley.

On the field, the Mets were not quite as active, ultimately falling to the Padres 7–1, but the team’s goals are bigger than one Wednesday night game in late July, and the moves they made ahead of the deadline are a good step towards accomplishing them.

While his mood was a bit somber after the loss, Mets star Francisco Lindor still expressed excitement when asked about the team’s acquisition of Rogers.

“He’s a good arm. He’s been in the league for a long time,” Lindor said. “I’ve faced him many times and he’s gotten me out many times. I’ve heard around the league that he’s a really good guy, good person. Somebody that’s probably going to pitch in big situations. It’s going to help us.”

Rogers and Helsley join closer Edwin Diaz in the Mets bullpen, and will be charged with getting important outs for the Mets through the stretch run of the season, and hopefully, the playoffs.

Harmanpreet Kaur: 'If a player can handle the pressure in the WPL, they can handle it anywhere'

The Mumbai Indians captain looks ahead to the third season of the competition her side won in its inaugural year

Interview by Vishal Dikshit12-Feb-2025The third season of the Women’s Premier League is not far away, and it comes about eight months before the ODI World Cup later this year in India. In this interview, India and Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur talks about the growth of the women’s game in India since the inception of the WPL, the gap it is filling in Indian cricket, how India is preparing players for the big tournaments, and more.First of all, how do you look back on the first two seasons of the WPL, and what are your expectations from the third season?
A lot of domestic players performed well in the first season, and some of them got an opportunity in international cricket. In the second season we got a few more players. [Ahead of the third] season, the domestic players have worked very hard, and we saw there was a lot of competition even in the auction. Some players have been bought at very good prices. It was very exciting and interesting to see the benchmark these players have set, and they have worked hard after that. This season all teams are well balanced, a lot of good players have come in. I’m expecting a lot of good matches, like we saw in the last two seasons. What were the highlights from the first two seasons for you?
For me, it was good to see the way we won some matches which looked one-sided at some point, and we were down, but we turned things around and won. We created a lot of memories, and this season also we’ll try to do that.Related

What was more difficult – bringing a new team together to win the first title or trying to defend that title in the second season, when there were certain expectations from you?
We did some good things consistently in the first season, but the second was a little up and down for us. We couldn’t play good cricket throughout the season, and we tried to come back in the end. The second season was more challenging, so keeping those things in mind we have worked and prepared for this season, made changes in the side. Hopefully, this season we’ll try to cover all bases which we didn’t the last time, and play better cricket.Harmanpreet had a tough season as captain last year, with MI losing four of their nine matches and getting knocked out in the Eliminator•PTI In the Eliminator last season, it was a narrow defeat for your team and you said after the game that the rest of the batters couldn’t take the team over the line in the chase. How do you coach that ability in younger players, given you cannot really replicate such pressure situations in the nets?
See, you can gain experience only over time, it’s not going to happen after just one or two games or situations. Our top five to six batters are all international players, whether overseas or Indian, but after that we have mainly domestic-level players, and they have reached here after performing well in that level. We try and train them in open nets, give them match situations in practice so that they know how to manage such pressure situations. We try to keep all these things in mind while training, but match experience is something totally different, which you can only gain over time. For this season we have worked and chatted about how to improve as a team, how to improve our game, and we’re going to use the remaining days to improve our side and be prepared for different kinds of situations to do better this year.Out of the five captains we have seen in the WPL – although Alyssa Healy is not fit this time – three have been overseas players. Do you think more Indian players should be given captaincy in this league?
Every franchise has its own thinking and plans, and all those things are not in our control. Ideally I would want more Indian players to be encouraged and given responsibility. I’m glad I got the opportunity [to lead MI]. Here I try to help the Indian players as much as I can, and I also work with the overseas players to try and improve our game. So this is a great opportunity to gel together and become better cricketers. If Indian players got to be captains in the WPL while working with the international players in their team, they would have improved as cricketers as well. Somewhere the franchises have to show a little more trust in Indian players, give them an opportunity and push them forward because this is the platform for it, and to improve Indian cricket. For example, when I was playing WBBL or Hundred, I was also helping my team captains there. So if franchises do this, our Indian players can get some help and things can be a lot better.Deepti Sharma has replaced the injured Alyssa Healy as captain at UP Warriorz, which means the WPL will see three Indian captains for the first time•BCCIDuring the WPL last year India’s head coach Amol Muzumdar said that India was trying to build a pool of fast bowlers from the WPL. But so far the girls who have come up from the WPL and gone on to play for India are mostly spinners. How do you plan to go about this when more spinners come up through the system?
Fast bowling is such a department where you can never have enough players. Their workload is very high, and we play back-to-back cricket, so the chances of injuries are high. Our plan is to try and get as many fast bowlers as possible. If we talk about Indian cricket, then we mostly get to see spinners come through the ranks because that’s how the pitches have been here, and spinners get more wickets here, and that’s why they get more chances to play. But we’re trying to change that mindset in Indian cricket – especially in women’s cricket – [saying] don’t pick players only on the basis of performances, and also keep in mind what the team requirements are. This is one thing we’re working on and there have been camps at the NCA for fast bowlers. See, every team wants to win and it’s common that you will pick match-winners in your team and they’re often spinners in Indian conditions. That’s one area where the pacers miss out on, so we call them to NCA, train them, and this season we’ve also seen a lot of pacers being picked, and I hope they do well, which will be great for us in international cricket. This year the ODI World Cup is in India so the focus will be on the spinners again. But it’s a different format, unlike last year when the WPL was played a few months before the T20 World Cup. Despite that, will you be keeping an eye on the young Indian players in other teams too, who might get a chance to play in the World Cup?
Yes, definitely, because I believe that if someone is doing well at this level then she has some quality in her. Yes, the format is totally different but if a player reaches this level [WPL] and can handle the pressure here, then you can handle pressure anywhere. We play all formats but the common thread is, can you handle the pressure at this level or not? So if we come across players who are able to handle themselves well at this level and make their team win, then why not? They should get a chance to do well for the country too.We have seen the T20 game evolve a lot in recent years. Have you ever had to sit down and think that you need to tweak or change your captaincy style a little to keep up with the times, and look at how teams like Australia and England have been going about it?
See, every team has its own positives and has its own areas where they have to improve. Our brand of cricket is totally different from how Australia and England play, and there are a lot of things I can’t change overnight, and it may not be good also for the players.Asha Sobhana, who in 2024 became the first bowler to take a five-for in the WPL, was fast-tracked into the T20 World Cup side later in the year, at age 33•BCCIAt the same time a lot of things have changed in the last two-three years. Earlier we had just one platform, which was domestic cricket, and when we used to get players from there to the Indian team, the captain and even the support staff had to work a lot with them to make them ready for international cricket. It was a huge gap to play international cricket after coming from domestic cricket. To cover that gap we have WPL now for the last couple of years. We picked players from both seasons, and some had been doing well in domestic cricket, but not all of them were great for international cricket. There have been changes in WPL teams as well over the last couple of years, and this year too they have scouted new players and brought them in. That should help a lot because WPL has filled that gap between international and domestic cricket and because of that, the hard work I, as captain, had to put in along with the support staff to make the players ready for internationals has reduced. Now it’s mainly about changing the planning, telling a player her role in the team, whereas earlier it was very different. Earlier you had to give a player more matches to perform, and that could affect the performance of the team. Now, thanks to WPL a lot of things have become easier for us in international cricket.Do you also see a change in the mindset and attitude of players coming through the WPL because they have better financial resources to work on their strength and conditioning, fitness and diets during the off season?
Definitely. I watched this last domestic season very closely and how each and every player had prepared. The level of our domestic cricket this season was quite good. Until now teams hardly used to score 200-250 in one-dayers, but this time we saw 300-plus totals, and some teams chased those down as well. So WPL has surely set that standard, that if you want to play at the top level, you have to change your game accordingly. When a player gets a WPL contract, she can spend on herself. Earlier domestic cricketers did not earn as much, so we weren’t sure how much some players could spend on themselves. Since the WPL has arrived, the franchises have also invested, they are holding camps, players are getting to work with different coaches. Thanks to franchise cricket, the good players stay busy throughout the year, play a good standard of cricket, work with good coaches. All these things have helped players a lot and the game will improve further in the coming years.Sajeevan Sajana (left), seen here with MI’s batting coach Devika Palshikhar, was one of the breakout stars of the last WPL season•Mumbai IndiansIn December you said that the Indian team lost some crunch moments in big games because of the “mindset” of individual players. What are you doing about that?
Again, this will also happen over the years. The first thing for that is, a player should get a certain number of matches. It also depends on how many matches a player gets at the district or state level and how often you get those kind of match situations. At the international level, such pressure situations will come again and again. But how often does it happen at the state level? That is also very important. Does the player have the kind of platform where she can train for such things? All these things are very important. Earlier they weren’t getting so much importance but right now at the WPL, you are playing a match scenario every day, training in the nets. That makes a difference. When you’re watching on TV, it’s very easy to say that things should have been like this or that. It’s very important to know: if that player had the experience of playing in that kind of a situation, did she get to do it again and again? In men’s cricket we’ve seen the IPL has been there for more than ten years, so they must have gone through those match situations so many times. But how many times has a girl experienced that? How many times has she succeeded in [those situations], all these things matter. In the next two or three years there will be a lot more cricket, the [WPL] teams will work on their shortcomings. There are matches every day now, so that team will win which will be able to handle such situations better. I’m sure this season will help the players a lot in terms of clearing that hurdle. Now that we’re into the third season of the WPL and we also see a lot of known players going unsold, the level of Indian domestic cricket getting better, is it time to increase the number of teams in the WPL?
We did see a lot of [Indian] players going unsold this season. International players you will get easily but increasing the number of teams will give an opportunity to more state-level players. So Indian cricket will benefit a lot. I think maybe next season we can look to add at least one more team, and maybe in the coming years we can add more. We do have the players [in domestic cricket]. Earlier there used to be thoughts about whether we have enough players or not, maybe we have enough only for two or three teams, but here we have five teams, which can become six soon, and maybe seven in one or two years, and then ten maybe. It’s all about giving opportunity. If you give them chances then job options will open up for players, they will think of becoming full-time cricketers, and then you will see an improvement as well. So right now it’s all about opportunities, and then players will come automatically.

Ex-MLB Star’s High School Son Gets Record $9M Signing Bonus After Draft

The Holliday family had a full circle baseball moment when Ethan Holliday, the son of former seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, was selected by the Colorado Rockies with the No. 4 pick in the 2025 MLB draft on July 13. Not only was Ethan Holliday the second son of Matt to be drafted into the big leagues, but he was selected by the team where the elder Holliday began his baseball career.

But Holliday's selection was far from just a marquee moment for his career, as well as a monumental one for his family. It also led to the phenon making MLB history.

The Rockies signed Holliday to a $9 million deal, according to MLB.com. The deal set a draft bonus record, surpassing the previous mark, which was set by 2025 No. 1 pick Eli Willits of the Washington Nationals. The record before that was held by none other than Holliday's older brother Jackson, of the Baltimore Orioles.

Holliday, a 6' 4" infielder, is regarded by MLB Pipeline as the top prospect in the 2025 draft. He hit .617 with 16 home runs in just 32 games during his senior year at Stillwater High School.

Now, he'll literally be following in his father's footsteps.

"This is a really incredible opportunity," Holliday said on MLB Network after being selected in the draft. "I'm so driven by faith, I'm so grateful. The Lord has really been the centerpiece of my life. I don't even know what words I can put to this. The Rockies organization, I'm so thankful, obviously with the family, the background, and my dad being drafted by them, that just adds such a cool thing. Knowing everyone in the organization since I was born, I'm just so grateful."

Cal Raleigh Landed Perfect Partnership for 'Big Dumper' Nickname After Home Run Derby

2025 is the year of Cal Raleigh.

The Mariners catcher has been on an absolute tear this season, launching 38 home runs before the All-Star break and in doing so nearly eclipsing Barry Bonds' first-half home run record of 39. Raleigh then got to participate in the Home Run Derby, with his dad Todd pitching and his brother Todd Jr. catching.

Raleigh, commonly known among MLB fans as "Big Dumper" due to his sizable hindquarters, took home the Home Run Derby trophy, and soon after landed himself an absolutely perfect endorsement deal.

On Wednesday, Honey Bucket, a provider of portable toilets headquartered in the Pacific Northwest, announced that they'd reached an agreement on a new partnership with Raleigh.

"This exciting collaboration brings together two names that stand for grit, reliability, and performance under pressure. Whether it’s behind the plate or behind the scenes at construction sites, community events, and stadiums, both Raleigh and Honey Bucket share one mission: deliver when it counts," the brand said in its release about the partnership.

"Honey Bucket is the name behind the cleanest, most dependable restrooms in the game. As someone who understands the value of showing up prepared every single day, I’m proud to team up with a company that does the same," Raleigh said.

After his historic first half of the season, Raleigh will hope to stay locked in at the plate as he looks to break the record for most home runs hit by a catcher in a single season, while also helping to guide the Mariners to the postseason for the first time since 2022.

Everton hit gold on "iconic" star who Rooney said was better than Big Dunc

Everton’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Sunday emphasised the rekindled spirit with David Moyes at the helm.

Work is still being plied in the hope of finding consistency across the park, but after such a fierce stream of summer departures, the Friedkin Group and Moyes and technical director Angus Kinnear can only be praised for reshaping the squad with talented and committed players.

Everton have 11 points after seven matches, and they are eighth in the standings.

However, there are still improvements to be made. Moyes made the point that multiple windows would be needed to lift the squad to the desired, collective standard, and the issues in the final third so far this season have been an illustration of that.

Everton's striker struggles

Dominic Calvert-Lewin left Everton at the end of his contract in June. He played on Merseyside for nine years and was at times considered among the finest strikers in the country.

But injuries and poor form across his final campaigns at Goodison Park made a renewal for the high-salary star difficult. And anyway, Beto had found form in Moyes’ system, scoring seven goals in the Premier League before the end of the campaign.

Beto has struggled to maintain a purple patch since that burst last spring, and with £27m summer signing Thierno Barry yet to adapt to the English game, the Toffees are being hindered by poor quality in the final third this term.

Even so, Everton have come on leaps and bounds, with the likes of Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye spearheading a sharp upturn in general attacking skill.

If the nines fail to raise their game, there’s little question that a new striker will be on the agenda in 2026. With the club going from strength to strength, a focal talisman of the likes of some of the former heavyweights would be nice.

Take, for example, a new version of the man Wayne Rooney believes is Everton’s best scorer for two decades.

Everton's finest modern striker

In 2020, when Rooney was interviewed by The Times and asked to name his finest Everton XI of players he’s played with, he admitted reluctance not to name Duncan Ferguson as his striker, but Big Dunc had to fall behind another.

Five years is a long time, but it’s hard to stake a compelling argument that any who has played for Everton in the intervening years surpasses Romelu Lukaku.

Rooney’s finest Everton XI

GK – Nigel Martyn

RB – Seamus Coleman

CB – Phil Jagielka

CB – Sylvain Distin

LB – Leighton Baines

CM – Thomas Graveson

CM – Idrissa Gueye

RW – Tim Cahill

CAM – Marouane Fellaini

LW – Steven Pienaar

CF – Romelu Lukaku

Speaking to The Times, Rooney waxed lyrical over the Belgian: “Lukaku is the best goalscorer Everton have had in the last 20 years. His link-up play isn’t the best but he just scores and with his power was another like Fellaini who, when he was on it, was almost impossible to play against.

“I know the fans will expect me to choose Duncan, and as good as he was and as much as I loved him as a player, I can’t ignore Lukaku. His goalscoring for Everton was phenomenal.”

The hulking centre-forward has wandered across Europe, playing for a vast range of clubs and winning plenty of silverware. However, there’s a case to be made that he was at his most fearsome when leading the line at Everton.

A knack for scoring goals was built around the usage of his physical attributes, with powerful, sinewy strength coupled with lethal bursts of pace, darting into dangerous positions and brushing aside defenders.

Former Blues boss Roberto Martinez once hailed the 32-year-old’s “elite brain”, proving he was more than just his muscles, and indeed four terms at the club, between 2013 and 2017, saw him hit 20 goals on three occasions, with Martinez also claiming him to be an “iconic figure of Belgian football”.

Given that he was sold to Manchester United for an initial £75m fee at the end of that stint, it’s hard to argue against Farhad Moshiri and the Blues having hit the jackpot. If only they had better applied the recoup and avoided years of struggle.

Ferguson holds a greater legacy, having played 272 games for Everton and having scored 72 goals, but in terms of sheer quality and wow factor when plying their trade in Liverpool, Rooney’s probably fair in his argument that Lukaku takes the cake.

How Moyes must long for such a centre-forward now. It’s easier said than done, but if the Scotsman can land himself a new version of the powerhouse, this Everton project might just become a whole lot more exciting.

Rohl drops Rangers team news hint by recalling youth international before Brann

Danny Rohl has wasted no time before making some changes at Rangers and has already welcomed one player back into the fold to reverse one of Russell Martin’s decisions.

Rohl: Rangers already have "clear" idea ahead of Brann

After nothing short of a disastrous season so far, Rangers enter their game against Brann in the Europa League in desperate need of victory on Danny Rohl’s debut.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has replaced Russell Martin to end the 49ers’ search for a manager, which saw both Steven Gerrard and Kevin Muscat lead the race before Rohl took the job.

Rohl already gets January promise from Rangers board as Cavenagh eyes two moves

The new Rangers boss could welcome some key upgrades…

ByTom Cunningham Oct 23, 2025

It’s been a big week for the young manager as he prepares for his first game in charge, but he admitted that his players already have a “clear” idea of what he wants.

That said, there’s no denying that it won’t be an easy fix at Ibrox this season and several changes are undoubtedly needed. Alas, for the time being, Rohl will have no choice but to make those changes using the current squad and that has already seen one player make his return to the fold.

Rohl drops major team news hint

In his first big change, Rohl has recalled Clinton Nsiala to first-team training for the first time since Martin told the France youth international he could leave the club in the summer.

Nsiala’s re-call represents the clean slate that the Gers are now operating with under Rohl and one that several stars should use to make their mark for the first time in Scotland.

It would certainly be quite the move if Nsiala came in for his first appearance of the season in the Europa League and his first game since the quarter-final of the competition in the last campaign, but it’s one that Rohl could make.

The return of the defender could prove to be an early masterstroke, too. Whilst he didn’t feature under Martin, he started nine games in the Scottish Premiership last season and lost just once. Given Rangers’ defensive problems in the current campaign and how he’s taken previous opportunities, it’s only right that a return is on the cards.

With Brann tonight and Kilmarnock at the weekend, it’s the type of week which may steer Rangers in the right direction for the first time this season.

Three Takeaways: Vladdy Guerrero, Rookie Hurler Humiliate Yankees in Game 2

The Blue Jays are one win away from their first trip to the American League championship series since 2016.

After hammering the Yankees 10–1 in Game 1 of the AL division series on Saturday, the Blue Jays were back at it on Sunday, racing to a 12–0 lead before holding on for a 13–7 win. Toronto’s bats were a big part of the story in Game 2, but rookie righty Trey Yesavage stole headlines with an incredible performance on the mound.

The Yankees failed to show up in either game north of the border and now find themselves with their backs against the wall, trailing 2–0 in the best-of-five series. Here’s a look at three takeaways from Toronto's big win on Sunday.

The Blue Jays Aren’t Intimidated

Toronto came out firing in Game 1, and that continued in Game 2. A 10–1 victory on Saturday led to a 13-run outburst that included a 12–0 lead by the fifth inning. The Blue Jays are not scared of what the Yankees have thrown at them, even with Bo Bichette sidelined.

After scoring eight runs on New York’s bullpen in Game 1, Toronto lit up Yankees ace Max Fried, scoring seven runs on eight hits in three-plus innings. Perhaps most importantly, the Blue Jays’ big bats came to play. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a monster grand slam to drive in four. Daulton Varsho had two bombs, George Springer also went deep and Alejandro Kirk drove in a run after hitting two home runs in Game 1.

The Blue Jays had one of MLB’s best offenses all season. Even with Bichette watching from the dugout, Toronto hasn’t missed a beat.

Trey Yesavage Earned His Spot

A lot was made about Toronto’s decision to give top prospect Trey Yesavage the start in a critical spot on Sunday. It turned out to be a phenomenal call. The rookie righty showed he’s the team’s top prospect for a reason.

In 5 1/3 electric, shutout innings, Yesavage held the Yankees without a hit, walked one and struck out 11, which was a Blue Jays postseason record. He sat in the mid-90s and garnered a ridiculous 18 whiffs, 11 of which came on his devastating splitter. He was excellent all afternoon and fed off the raucous crowd at Rogers Centre.

The 22-year-old is Toronto’s No. 1 prospect, and MLB Pipeline ranks him at No. 26 overall. The 20th pick in the 2024 MLB draft, Yesavage rose quickly through the minor league ranks this season, earning a call-up in mid-September after 25 outings.

Yesavage went 1–0 with a 3.21 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in three big league starts before the playoffs. He struck out 16 and walked seven in 14 innings. It was a gamble to give him a start in such a big spot, but he stepped into the spotlight and owned the moment.

Toronto’s starting rotation ranked 23rd in baseball with just 8.5 fWAR, and it was 24th in FIP (4.46), so there was plenty of room to add another piece. Yesavage is an elite talent that elevates the rotation when he’s locked in. He’s earned that rotation spot after Sunday’s immaculate performance.

It’s Getting Late Early for the Yankees

The Yankees entered the 2025 season looking to finish what they started in 2024 when they fell short against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. They got past the Boston Red Sox in the wild-card round after losing Game 1 and winning the next two, but now find themselves on the brink again.

In two games against Toronto, New York has been outscored 23–8. At one point, it was 22–1 before the Yankees got two runs in the sixth inning on Sunday, then followed that with five more in the seventh. That only came against the back of the Blue Jays’ bullpen after the Yanks dug themselves an insurmountable deficit.

New York’s staff has allowed 23 runs in 16 innings so far in this series, which works out to a brutal ERA of 12.94. Part of that has been Toronto’s relentless offense, but it’s also the Yankees’ pitchers not executing. The franchise didn’t give Fried $218 million to watch him allow seven runs in three-plus innings during a key playoff game. The lefty delivered 6 1/3 shutout innings in Game 1 of the wild-card series but now has a 9.64 ERA in his last five playoff starts dating back to 2022.

Now the series heads to Yankee Stadium, where Carlos Rodón will face Shane Bieber on Tuesday night. The 32-year-old lefty allowed three runs in six innings against the Red Sox in Game 2 of the wild-card series, so he’s already pitched in an elimination game this postseason.

Rodon will need to be at his best because the Yankees already find themselves on the verge of a very long vacation.
